We are very grateful to everyone involved.

2 2 Introduction We are delighted to introduce the syllabus for the 41st Woodley Festival. Once again most of the Festival will be held at Woodley Town Council s excellent Oakwood Centre. We aim to provide high quality for your enjoyment and are very selective in our choice of professional adjudicators, venues and other facilities. In addition to being an enjoyable artistic success, the 2010 Festival saw some 6,000 visitors including 2,000 performers and 1,000 performances. We strive to create a warm and friendly environment, with the emphasis being on the enjoyment of performance and the appreciation of others efforts all in the presence of professional adjudicators and a supportive audience. Upper Junior choirs from The Marist,South Lake, Crosfields and Waverley schools. All performers take to the stage at the end of the 2010 Finale Concert, accompanied by our sponsor Ann Manning. We are very grateful to MANNINGUK for a 6th year of generous support & participation as our sponsor. We also wish to thank our committee, our president, and some 50 volunteers who all help to make the Festival run smoothly. We all look forward to welcoming you to the 2011 Woodley Festival. 5 5 The Woodley Festival is a registered charity, and a "not-for-profit" organisation. None of our committee members are paid, nor do they even claim "mileage" expenses.

6 6 Verse & Prose Section Edwina Lloyd LLAM, LGSM Edwina, who lives in Bristol, teaches Speech & Drama, frequently adjudicates for the British Federation of Festivals and examines for Vanguard Examinations. She loves directing Shakespeare, particularly with young people, with experience in the Royal Shakespeare Co. and Childrens' Theatre. Edwina is a professional actress, and regularly accepts TV work. She loves giving Recitals. She enjoys working in a pro-amateur company, each summer. Blessed with three stepchildren, Edwina is also an extremely happy Granny! She knows how it feels to be a Teacher entering a wide range of Group, Duo and Solo classes in the local Bristol Festival and has full understanding of festival excitement and anxiety, necessary, she thinks, if one is to adjudicate with sensitivity! She thoroughly enjoys the privilege of adjudication, learning from other Teachers and encouraging the progress of performers.

7 7 Janet Tucket LLAM, PGCA. GODA (Assoc). Janet trained at the Barbara Macrae Studio, Bristol and has taught Speech and Drama for over 40 years. She has been an adjudicating member of the British & International Federation of Festivals since 1976 working at Festivals all over the UK. In 2000 she had her first experience of international adjudicating at the Hong Kong Schools Festival. In 2004 she became an Associate of the Guild of Drama Adjudicators. Janet is also involved in adjudicating One-Act and Full Length Play Festivals. She is an examiner and the Registrar for the Poetry Vanguard, a board which examines the full range of Speech and Drama. As well as adjudicating Janet is the Speech and Drama secretary of the Bristol Festival of Music, Speech and Drama. Her teaching is now mainly at the Badminton School, Bristol as well as in private practice. In past years she has run a Youth Theatre Group, Blue Lodge Drama which won awards at the Bristol and Avon One-Act Festivals. Janet is looking forward to adjudicating at Woodley Festival, sharing in the creativity of the performers.

24 24 Pianoforte Section Adjudicator Ann Martin-Davis GRSM, DipRCM Ann Martin-Davis studied at the Royal College of Music where she won the College's premier piano prize, the Chappell Gold Medal. A series of awards led to her South Bank debut and she subsequently won scholarships to study with Arie Vardi in Hanover and Gyorgy Sebok in Canada. Ann has performed twentieth century and contemporary solo and chamber repertoire throughout all five continents and she is regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Her role as a pianist/ producer of innovative programmes has involved extensive research into contemporary music, including a trip to Beijing for the British Council. Ann played to the polish composer Witold Lutoslawski shortly before his death and her disc of his complete keyboard and chamber works received international acclaim. Following her signing to Nimbus, it is to be re-released, together with several new recordings next year. Recent projects have included Cycles, a reworking of Schumann s Frauenliebe und Leben by poet Sophie Hannah and composer Gabriel Jackson which toured over thirty arts festivals and L Art de Toucher, a programme of French solo piano and harpsichord music which she premiered at Lichfield International Festival with harpsichordist Sophie Yates. Ann will perform her latest programme Landscape on an active volcano in New-Zealand, in the Teatros Amazonas in the Brazillian jungle and more importantly at Bognor Regis Music society in As well as her playing, Ann teaches at the Royal College of Music Junior Department. 36 36 Instrumental Section Adjudicator Michael Johnson ARCM, B.Mus, PGCE Michael Johnson studied at the Royal College of Music, London where he gained diplomas in Singing, Violin and Piano and a London B.Mus Degree. His teachers included Hervey Alan for singing, Antonio Brosa for violin and Herbert Howells and Anthony Milner for harmony. For nine years he was Director of Music at two schools before being appointed Chief Music Manager for Leeds City Council in In Leeds he founded and directed the Leeds International Concert Season, at 250 concerts a year, Britain s largest local authority music programme. During his eight years in the city he was Executive Director of the Leeds International Piano Competition, founder of the Leeds Conductors Competition and Director of the Leeds International Film Festival. Following his time at Leeds, Michael Johnson became General Manager at St David s Hall, Cardiff and latterly Chief Executive of Plymouth Pavilions, a major new concert and conference centre in the South West. Since 1994 he has been engaged in a wide range of musical activities including being Director of the Jacqueline de Pré International Cello Competition, sponsorship consultant for IMG Artists and Administrator of the Southwell Minster Music Festival, where for a while he was a Tenor Lay Clerk. While working in the southwest, Michael Johnson was also Director of the University of Plymouth Choral Society and the South West Chamber Choir. He still directs the West Devon Chorale in four concerts a year in West Devon. Much of his time presently is spent as an Examiner and overseas Co-ordinator for the Associated Board and he has travelled to all parts of the world on exam tours. He teaches singing, violin and piano for the University of Bath and is Director of West Wiltshire Music Limited. He is also a Mentor for the Associated Board s CTABRSM and TME courses for teachers in singing, violin and piano.

After school appointments in Coventry and Bury he moved to (the then) Bulmershe College of Education, eventually becoming Head of Music. He is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Reading. He has a strong interest in music theatre and has both directed / conducted several musicals, and composed incidental music for the professional theatre. He has been based locally as an organist for many years and has worked in a number of churches and given several recitals. 48 48 Vocal Section Adjudicator Eileen Field ARAM GRSM LRAM ARCM PGCA Eileen Field studied singing and piano at the Royal Academy of Music and was appointed an Associate in February She has extensive experience as a soprano soloist, accompanist, choral conductor and teacher of piano and singing from beginners to postgraduate level. She very much enjoys giving masterclasses for solo singers and choirs, and has worked with among others, the Highcliffe Junior Choir, former winner of the Sainsbury Choir of the Year Competition, and students at the Söngskólinn í Reykjavík (The Reykjavík Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts) in Iceland. Eileen is a grade and diploma examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, also moderating examiners and helping to train new examiners. In 2007 she was appointed Consultant Moderator. She has recently been involved as Lead Consultant in the selection of repertoire for the ABRSM Singing Syllabus. She has examined and presented seminars for teachers in the UK, Southern Africa, the Far East, the USA and Canada, and throughout Europe, including the Faroe Islands and Iceland. In 2000 she selected the material and wrote performance notes for the Boosey and Hawkes 20 th Century Easy Song Collection and a second volume, containing more advanced repertoire, was published in November Eileen s work as a long-established adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals has taken her all over the British Isles with frequent appearances as an adjudicator for the National Festival of Music for Youth. She is also in demand as an adjudicator for competitions and, in 2006, was a member of the panel of jurors for the Young Musician of the Year Competition in Hong Kong.
