We are very grateful to everyone involved.

2 2 Introduction We are delighted to introduce the syllabus for the 42nd Woodley Festival. Once again most of the Festival will be held at Woodley Town Council s excellent Oakwood Centre. We aim to provide high quality for your enjoyment and are very selective in our choice of professional adjudicators, venues and other facilities. In addition to being an enjoyable artistic success, the 2011 Festival saw some 6,200 visitors including 2,200 performers and 1,000 performances. We strive to create a warm and friendly environment, with the emphasis being on the enjoyment of performance and the appreciation of others efforts all in the presence of professional adjudicators and a supportive audience. 6 6 Verse & Prose Section Jenny Thornton AGSM, ALAM, CertEd, LISTD AGSM (Teaching), ALAM (Acting) ALAM (Public Speaking), Certificate in Education, LISTD, CDE (Freestyle Dance), Assistant Principal for Edexcel, Adjudicator for British and International Federation of Festivals. Jenny trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Having taught drama and led the Performing Arts Team in a large Comprehensive for 10 years Jenny now enjoys running her own Performance Centre with ages from 4 years to adults delivering drama, dance and musical theatre. Her work in a local secondary school involves taking A Level Drama and Theatre Studies and organising the after school drama club. Jenny loves writing and was delighted when LAMDA printed one of her monologues in their exam syllabus book. She is an Assistant Principal for Edexcel visiting schools in her North London area and abroad examining GCSE practical performances. Jenny is looking forward to visiting Woodley Festival and making it a very positive experience for all concerned. Drama is a life skill that changed me from a stuttering introvert to a confident individual. We can give our children no better opportunity.

7 7 Margery Jackson LGSM, Area representative STSD Margery is from the North West of England but has pursued her love of Music and Drama throughout the world living and working in Switzerland, Belgium, France and America. She is now based near London and continues to be active in the theatre both onstage and offstage, acting, directing and teaching. Graduating from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama as a teacher of Speech and Drama she has spent a number of years at schools and colleges. These include The International School of Geneva, The British Primary School in Brussels, Hemdean House School in Reading and Head of Drama at Heathfield School in Ascot, England. Whilst living in Paris and Philadelphia she tutored business executives in Effective Communication and in Presentation Skills. As a parallel career, Margery has directed, sung and acted in many musicals, plays and operas. She founded the Geneva Amateur Operatic Society in Switzerland which is the largest English speaking Society outside the U.K. She now teaches privately and travels widely as an External Examiner, recently representing Trinity/Guildhall in the U.K. and internationally in Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Malta and South Africa. Margery has adjudicated at Festivals in England, Ireland and Hong Kong.

24 24 Pianoforte Section Adjudicator Paul Roberts FGSM ARAM As a pianist and writer, as an enlightening teacher and lecturer, Paul Roberts has a versatility and energy that has enthralled audiences around the world. His speciality is the music of the French Impressionists, to which he has devoted numerous recordings, lecture-recitals and masterclasses. He is the author of a biography, Debussy (Phaidon), and a seminal study of Debussy s piano music, Images (Amadeus). He has recorded several discs of Debussy s piano music and a number of DVDs, including a lecture recital on Debussy s Preludes, Mists, Fairies, and Fireworks, recorded at the Steinway Hall in New York (Amadeus Press). He has just completed a presentation of Debussy s La Mer and Ravel s Bolero for EuroArts (Naxos). Paul Roberts has performed in Australia at the conservatories of Sydney and Brisbane, and in Europe is a regular guest at the Stockholm Academy, at Malmo Academy, and the University of Alcala near Madrid. In America he has given masterclasses at Juilliard School in New York and the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, and performs annually at the Portland International Piano Festival. In France Paul Roberts has been for twelve years the musical director of the international piano summer school Music at Ambialet ( In London he teaches at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he is an Honorary Fellow, and in Manchester he is a visiting professor at the Royal Northern College of Music. He is currently working on a new book Reflections: The Piano Music of Maurice Ravel, to be accompanied by a CD recording; at the end of February he returned from a four-week tour of the United States where he gave recitals and masterclasses in Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Baylor College in Texas, and at the Conservatory of Music in San Francisco. Although Paul now lives in East Sussex, he was born and educated in High Wycombe. As a child he regularly took part in piano festivals similar to Woodley. It is his memory of these, along with his love of teaching, that makes adjudicating one of the highlights of his busy schedule. 50 50 Vocal Section Choral Adjudicator Ian Kennedy GGSM After winning the coveted Gold Medal at the Guildhall School of Music, Ian Kennedy enjoyed a highly varied career as tenor soloist in opera, oratorio and recital, in repertoire ranging from pre-baroque to contemporary musical theatre and in venues as diverse as major concert halls and cruise liners. A frequent broadcaster, he was a member of the BBC Singers and is an experienced accompanist and conductor. He was for many years musical director of Gilbert and Sullivan for All, with whom he toured extensively. Career highlights include performances at Sydney Opera House, La Scala, Milan and the Hollywood Bowl, where he conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Much of his time is now devoted to teaching. He was appointed to the vocal faculty of the Guildhall in 1986 and also teaches at Cambridge, City and Sussex Universities. He is greatly in demand for vocal and choral workshops and as an adjudicator and his anecdotal recital programmes of Ballads, Songs and Snatches are proving particularly popular.
