Slamet Haryono & Wadiyo Composing Songs for Pre-School s Slamet Haryono Department of Drama, Dance and Music Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Semarang slametharyono@mail.unnes.ac.id Wadiyo Department of Drama, Dance and Music Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Semarang wadiyo@mail.unnes.ac.id Abstract - Composing songs for pre-schoolers is necessary since it can be used to deliver educational messages to students. This study aims at composing the songs which are suitable with pre-schoolers by employing educational themes. Method used in this research was Research and Development (R & D), while the research s target was the song compositions for pre-schoolers. The steps of composing the songs were: creating the lyrics, creating melody, merging the melody and lyrics, creating the harmonization, arranging the music accompaniment, training on singing the songs technique, recording the songs with the music accompaniment, producing the record both in audio and audiovisual, and packaging the product in CD format. The results showed that the song compositions could be produced in a form of audio and visual audio recording format. It was completed with the song lyrics written in the form of notation. Later, the songs were introduced and used as the medium to deliver educational messages by pre-school and kindergarten teachers who had been already received the information about the use of the song composition from the dissemination done by researchers in the regular meeting events of the Kindergatern Teacher Association. Key words: children songs, pre-school, educational message, song, music accompaniment 1. INTRODUCTION This paper is a follow-up study or a third stage of research of the research team in which the first and second phase of research has been conducted. Research related to the children's songs is done because of the urgency of the situation upon the urgent needs of children's songs in the community to convey educational messages to the children of primary school education level. Children's songs become very important in the world of children's education because children have not been able to receive input which requires deep critical reasoning yet. For children in a relatively early age or young age, the sensitivity still exists in the right hemisphere of his brain. Therefore through the song, the child will be happy to listen and happy to sing because his feelings have gone normal and or more advanced than the maturity of logic. From birth, the human child has been blessed with the life of International Conference on Arts and Culture 13 September

Slamet Haryono & Wadiyo a feeling. Therefore it is not wrong when a mother who recently gave birth, was happy to hold her baby by humming and singing for her son. According to Van de Carr and Marc Lehrer (2004), to educate children in an effort to maintain emotions using music, you should not wait for a child born let alone wait for the child to enter school. While the baby is still in the womb, a mother should have introduced her baby to music. Enjoying music, for pregnant women, can reduce difficulties in relation to the relationship with the baby she has. If one is pregnant, one should regularly listen to the rhythm of the music then tell and sing for the baby that is in the womb, surely the baby will be born in a healthier condition. When the baby is born and one day experiencing fussiness, the rhythm of music can calm him, comfort, and can lull him sleeping. What has been suggested by Van de Carr and Marc Lehrer as both psychologists, widely believed and widely practiced by pregnant women almost all over the world and the results are said to be amazing. Van de Carr holds patents for discoveries in education, medicine, and technology that include the first fetal/ maternal computer monitor and the baby's first respiratory monitor. His work in prenatal care and emotional bonding has made him a renowned pioneer in the field of early childhood education and development. Marc Lehrer is also a psychologist in the Child Study Unit, Department of Pediatrics at the University of California Medical School and former president of the Northern California Society of Clinical Hypnotis. He is said to be very expert on handling women who experience stress while pregnant. The music he uses is able to stimulate the growth and health of the fetus until the child is born and grow till early ages. What is being said by Van de Carr and Marc Lehrer is a clear proof of the usefulness of music for human children. Music plays a very important role for the physical and mental growth of human beings. Music is also very important and very instrumental for the improvement of emotional intelligence and logic. The facts mention, some famous scientists who one of them can be mentioned, for example Einstein, is very fond of music and he is a man who is good at playing the violin. Music can activate the right hemispheres associated with creativity. Music can also activate the left brain that is closely related to the formation of children's intelligence in formal education. That's why it is thought to be very important, even though our educational world does not reach from the moment of pregnancy, but since the era of this country has not established as an independent country, Ki Hajar Dewantara has laid the foundation for the importance of music art education, both instrumental art and sound art to be given to the students. What about our main educational condition nowadays which has been started from preschool children aged 3-4 years which by society known as Early Childhood Education and age 5-6 years which he called as Kindergarten? At least for the time being in Kindergarten education has been outlined through its curriculum, that a Kindergarten child in a semester is outlined must have mastered or can sing at least 20 children's songs. This evidence of preschool education especially kindergartens has considered important, that music or song is a very important media for the interests of children's education. The basic logic of assigning songs to give to children, of course is 582 International Conference on Arts and Culture 13 September 2017

Slamet Haryono & Wadiyo the songs that contains the theme of education, which is not because the child should be able to sing, but through the songs that educational messages will be more easily captured and lived by the child. Previous field observations showed that each school for preschool education is in dire need of a children's song with an educational theme. They need it very much because each teaching material or educational message that they convey to the students is very helpful when it is given through the song or educational message that was sung. Thus, the students will be able to receive such educational materials or messages naturally because of their delivery through taste. The brain associated with logic will gradually evolve through the touch of taste. Hence, through singing, the tendency of every child will be able to easily capture the educational message. Departing from such thinking then the research relating to the creation of this children's song that the product finally had to produce, that is a ready-made children's song products, felt to be very important to do. The purpose of this research is then to realize the children's songs with the theme of education that can be used for teaching media by teachers especially for preschoolers. B. METHOD This study adopted and developed from what has been developed by Brriggs & Wager (1992) and Bogdan & Biklen (1982). As the type of research development, the research approach after getting the results of research related to the needs of the field and the need has been mapped by the researcher. Then, the results of the research should be followed up with products to support those needs. The finished product as produced in previous research for this stage is tested in the field for its usefulness and recording aspect. 1. Location and Research Subject The location of this research is Semarang city. The subjects of the study are the main schools of principals of teachers, principals, and students, especially those in preschool education. 2. Target of Study in Research The aim of this study is to relate to the creation of children's songs products, especially for Preschoolers. In essence, the desired song is the a song composed under educational theme because these songs should be given to the students through the learning process. The content and/or messages of the song are attempted to encapsulate the aesthetic nuances that fit the child's age. 3. Research Steps The research step is by making the product through lyrical creation process, melody creation, harmonization, making of accompaniment, training of singing song, recording of song to accompaniment, manifesting the form of recording. All children's songs that are created suggest that education follows the curriculum's guidance on educational messages to be provided for preschoolers. Themes are My Environment, International Conference on Arts and Culture 13 September

Slamet Haryono & Wadiyo My Needs, Animals, Plants, Recreation, Work, Communication, Water, Air, and Fire, My Homeland, and the Universe. C. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION After the process of researches, finally are created children's educational song products. In the creation of products through the process of lyrical creation, melody creation, harmonization, accompaniment, training of singing, recording of songs to accompaniment, and the realization of products in the form of recording. All of the children's songs that are created are educational themes following the curriculum references that the songs used for teaching media in Kindergarten or Preschool education must be educational themed. Themes are My Environment, My Needs, Animals, Plants, Recreation, Work, Communication, Water, Air, and Fire, My Homeland, and the Universe. The process of creating a song can begin in various ways. The first way is to create a melody first, then given a lyric that contains song messages. The second way, is to make a song as a song first, then created the melody. The third way, is between melody and poem containing song messages made together (Soeharto, 1986). Songs are part of music while music is a work of art. The creation of a song as a work of art according to the theory of individual creativity versus the established form of culture as proposed by Simmel (1971) is always dependent on existing and established forms of culture in society. The creation of children's songs here also follows what Suharto and Simmel had brought together. The form of music or song that have been established in a manifestation of music or song creation by Prier (1989) is in the form of motive, phrases, and musical sentences arranged into one. That's the form. For that, is a musical work to be enjoyed by others. Prier refers to the opinion of Clive Bell, a German philosopher reveals, that the art of vision and music of all time has an important form so that the art is appreciated people. The essence of art is an important form or the original term from Bell, which was a significant form. The music created here all has the form as proposed by Bell and Prier. According to Budhisantoso (1994), in fact, whatever form of art produced by a society, not free from the influence of the prevailing culture. Whatever the power of the imagination and creativity of an artist, he always refers to the cultural values, social norms or life-styles prevailing in society. According to Hoebel (1976), the successful artist is not solely because of his works to meet the relative size of beauty, but because of his ability to convey cultural messages beautifully. Efforts to create children's songs also follow the form of children's songs that have been there and attempt to deliver the message of education delivered through the song. The message according to Melalatoa (in Anthropology News, 1989) is in the form of certain values, beliefs, knowledge, norms or meanings in the motif, shape, style of the work. Their success conveys messages, depending on the ability of the community to catch them by reference to cultural values and living social norms. Therefore, as long as the artist on the cultural values and social norms in expressing the messages beautifully, during which he will also successfully establish relationships with 584 International Conference on Arts and Culture 13 September 2017

Slamet Haryono & Wadiyo the support community. The norm and value of the creation of this song is well preserved as it will be used to convey educational messages to children. The art form the impulse sense of human beauty. Encouragement of the sense of beauty is not free from feelings and thoughts, which formed on the human/ artists through the process of active socialization with the environment. In relation to that, art can be said as a social expression, which is part of the culture, which is closely related to other cultural elements. Therefore Keesing (1992) concluded, that the arts no matter how much his form has many social functions that are very important as a guidance of society and culture concerned. The song is strived to be a tool for fostering the culture of children through education. A song as a work of art always contains messages. Messages are understood as a content, either expressed or implied in the art. Because art is subtle, then, any message conveyed through artwork tends to be accepted with a sense of peace. However, by its subtle nature, sometimes it makes some people to not able to capture the message of art, or the understanding of art is not always the same. It all depends on the experience of each senses, according to Altenbernd and Lislie L. Lewis (1970) and this depends on the sensitivity of each individual's capture power. Catching the song messages by the child, in the learning process is expected by the teacher will be assisted with the form of verbal explanation as the function of the song in the learning process only as a tool to convey the message of education. Here is an example of a song created in a children's songwriting product for Preschool. International Conference on Arts and Culture 13 September

Slamet Haryono & Wadiyo D. CONCLUSION As has been stated in the abstract sessions that, the production of song products for preschoolers needs to be done because the children can not make their own songs. This song product can be used to convey educational message. Therefore, songs made in the form of children's song products should be educational themes. The song creation process has been done and has come into being as a ready-made song. The steps of making the product are through the process of lyrical creation, the creation of melody, harmonization, the making of accompaniment, the training of singing songs, the recording of songs to the accompaniment, manifestation in the form of audio and audio recording, and packing the product in the form of CD recording. The song product for preschoolers can be realized in the form of a recording accompanied by a song text written using notation. REFERENCES Altenbernd, dan Leslie L.
