Gustavo Dudamel conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic while cameras record the first LA Phil LIVE theatercast streamed from Walt Disney Concert Hall on January 9 th to 450 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. Theater-goers had the benefit of viewing backstage interviews during intermission. Other theatercasts in this season occur on March 13 th and June 5 th. The LA Phil has placed substantial artistic investment dollars in theatercasts with the vision of expanding the reach of classical music. MESSAGE FROM AFFILIATE CHAIR Photo by Genaro Molina, Los Angeles Times New doors opened for the Affiliates recently. We walked into an opportunity for engaging students in classical music with LA Phil LIVE. What would happen if each of our sixteen committees purchased theater tickets for a high school choir, band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, or guitar ensemble to attend a local movie theater to view the LA Philharmonic on the big screen? We would expand classical music to hundreds of youth who typically would not see Gustavo Dudamel conduct the LA Philharmonic. Another new avenue for service is the Used Instrument Drive coordinated by Meg Evans (Foothill Committee and COPW) for Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). The Affiliates are collecting used recorders, violins, violas, cellos, flutes, clarinets, and other orchestral instruments. We will bring them en masse to Walt Disney Concert Hall in May for distribution to YOLA students. Such outreach projects are volunteers food for our spirits. Arlyss Burkett

2 Page 2 INTRODUCTION OF INCOMING AFFILIATE CHAIR AIDA GAONA Aida Gaona will serve as Affiliate Chair for the term July 1, 2011 through June 30, She joined the International Committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association in 1994 driven by her love, passion and appreciation for music. She served as Committee President from and chaired four of the Committee s International Night Benefit Balls and two of its silent auctions. For five years, Aida has served on the Affiliates Presidents and Coordinators board. A native of the City of Jerusalem, Aida immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1968, and she became a naturalized American citizen. She pursued a career in the travel industry, and for a wholesale tour operator, she advanced to Executive Vice President of Operations. Aida has traveled the world, including exotic, off-the-beaten-track destinations. It is with great humility that I look forward to serving as Affiliate Chair, says Aida. It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to further serve this remarkable organization of dedicated and outstanding volunteers who share the same common goals in supporting the LA Philharmonic and music education for the children of Los Angeles. Aida is married to Rick Gaona, and they reside in Northridge with their son Ricky. INVITATIONAL REHEARSAL WITH CELLIST GAUTIER CAPUCON One of the leading cellists of his generation, Gautier Capucon, 30 years old, performed Schumann s Cello Concerto at the February 18 th invitational rehearsal in Walt Disney Concert Hall. Conductor was another French native, Lionel Bringuier who is performing his fourth and final year as Associate Conductor with the LA Philharmonic. Following the rehearsal, the Affiliates strolled to the Fifth Floor, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for a luncheon. Thanking the Affiliates for their support of the LA Phil was David Bohnett, Chairman of the Board, Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. The orchestra s Associate Principal Cellist Danny Rothmuller entertained the Affiliates once more before his retirement. He shared adventures from the orchestra s European Tour. Over the years, he has entertained Danny Rothmuller Affiliates at dinner parties where he cooks and chats while preparing a Hungarian dinner for twelve, his gift to the Affiliates silent auctions benefitting the LA Phil. While the LA Philharmonic was on tour in Europe, Los Angeles Philharmonic Association Chair David Bohnett and President Deborah Borda announced on February 3 rd the extension of Music Director Gustavo Dudamel s contract through the season. Bohnett commented, We are thrilled with Gustavo s decision to remain at the LA Phil through our centennial season. In partnership with Gustavo and the orchestra, the Board will continue to make significant investments in Gustavo s unique artistic vision, as well as our comprehensive music education program, YOLA, and our groundbreaking live theatercasts, LA Phil LIVE. Dudamel stated, The connection I feel to the musicians and leadership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and to the City of Los Angeles is special. It is our aspiration to build something new, something that takes us towards a brighter future for music, for education, for young people, for the community, for the sensibility of our society and their interactions with one another.

5 Page 5 AFFILIATES MEMBERSHIP FOCUS An Opportunity to Expand Membership What pride we felt as we read of the successes of our LA Philharmonic on its European tour! Let's share this pride by expanding our Affiliate Family. Having more members benefits our own committees, as well as the Phil. There are SO many people out there who would welcome your invitation for membership. Consider asking not only friends, but also acquaintances, and friends of friends. You will be giving them the gift of membership in a dynamic and enriching organization, reports Membership Coordinator Sheri Gill. We are thrilled to have 72 new Affiliate members this year! This is the opportunity for new members to give back to their committees, by sponsoring a new member themselves. And the rest of us can continue as last year, bringing in an additional 72 members. Wow...that would be 144 new Affiliates! Remember that we are having another membership contest. The winning committee, which has the greatest increase in dues-paying members, will have free bench seats to a Tuesday or Thursday performance at the Hollywood Bowl, and free use of the Hollywood Bowl Cottage for their entire committee. The winner will be announced at Spring Celebration on May 19th. Also on that day, "Sparkling Achievement Certificates" will be given to committees who make significant improvement in increasing their membership. We hope to present these to all committees! Membership Mini-Workshops The Affiliates Presidents and Coordinators Board members have participated in a series of membership mini-workshops at their monthly meetings. The meeting in November 2010 focused on attracting and/or retaining new members. Pictured below from left are Carol McCormac (Long Beach), Adrienne Bass (COPW) and Velma McKelvey (Foothill) who shared their committee s recruitment and retention approaches with fellow Board members for possible use in other committees. Membership Mini-Workshop CRESCENDO XIX FEATURED KOREAN CULTURE If you missed Crescendo XIX held on January 16th in the Fifth Floor, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, you missed an elegant and beautiful spectacular. The program featured Korean classical dance and music and was narrated by Donald Dongsuk Kim, Assistant Professor, Department of Ethnomusicology at UCLA and Founder of Korean Classical Music and Dance Company. The event was followed by a tea that had audience members chatting appreciably about the graceful performances and elegant costumes they had just seen. At the January 24th meeting of the Affiliates Presidents and Coordinators, based on the popularity of the Korean music program, it was decided that Crescendo will focus on world music for future educational programs. Sona Boyd and Marie Stiebing serve as Co-Chairs of Crescendo.

ENCORE COPW s new year began with an excellent program on January 8 at the Luxe Hotel in Brentwood. Sixty-five members and guests were treated to an uplifting and stirring musical program by eight students from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) who performed various Mozart pieces. A highlight of the day was sharing lunch and conversation with the charming young musicians. Did COPW meet some future LA Phil members? COPW member Chris Upton assumes music stand duties for the student octet s director. On January 9, President, Adrienne Bass and Membership Chair, Lenore Rodah staffed a table in Walt Disney Concert Hall (WDCH) prior to the concert with the goal of connecting with some concert goers who might be interested in joining COPW. Brochures and fliers on both the LA Phil Affiliates organization and COPW specifically were available. It was a good idea and effort even though most of the questions from those who dropped by were about WDCH or the concert, and only a few questions were about the Affiliates or COPW.
