2 Piano Accompaniment In special situations, the teacher may request a pianist to come in and play for a student. This is not a requirement but a suggestion. If the teacher/parent/student are in agreement to this, Adam Whiting has agreed to assist. Since this is not part of CIM tuition, parents will need to pay Adam independently. Fees are due upon completion of the Achievement Day performance. Fees below include one rehearsal and the Achievement performance time (if extra rehearsal time is required, Adam s fee is $50 an hour). Concert attendees are now welcome to record the performances of their children or students. Please silence your devices, avoid flash photography and take care not to obstruct the view of other concertgoers. There are two exceptions to this policy. We ask that you not record concerts listed in the CIM Concert Guide nor competitions such as Showcase Concerto Competition. 2

4 Faculty News ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kimberly Meier-Sims was a guest clinician at the University of Georgia at Athens Suzuki Workshop, February 4th where the majority of the Suzuki violin faculty has taken Suzuki Teacher Training with her at summer Suzuki institutes. Come say hello to Laura Shuster, playing in the pit orchestra for Playhouse Square's run of "The King and I" at Connor Palace Theater! February 7-26 Tracy Rowell was interviewed for Contrabass Conversations, a bass podcast. Student News ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Piano Group Class celebrated Halloween! On December 11, Tanya Groys had her studio recital. All the students did an outstanding job, and made their teacher very proud! Emma Grace Ramon (piano student of Tanya Groys) participated in Cleveland Orchestra Children Chorus Christmas concerts and "Nutcracker " performances. Niko Ustin (piano student of Tanya Groys) was cast in "Christmas Carol" at the Cleveland Playhouse. 4

5 Master Classes Ken Johnston, concertmaster of Erie Philharmonic and Bluewater Chamber Orchestras, and violin professor at several colleges, gave a master class Thursday, December 15, for our Advanced Students. -Submitted by Laura Shuster This past semester, the Sato Center s Saturday morning advanced group class has been fortunate to have some wonderful guest teachers. Eric Wong, Cavani String Quartet s newest member (viola), came to the class in November, working with Sandy Deng on Monti s Csardas and Christina Bencin on Massenet s Meditation from Thais. In December, David Updegraff, former Head of CIM s Violin Department, worked with Owen Lockwood on Bloch s Nigun and Aidan Scheuer on Mozart s Concerto No. 3 in G Major. In January, Stephen Rose, Principal Second Violin of the Cleveland Orchestra worked with Cole Hoff on Pugnani s Largo espressivo and Moshi Tang on Sarasate s Zigeunerweisen. We are grateful to these teachers for sharing their expertise and their love of music with us. -Submitted by Stephen Sims ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Advanced Students Julia Schilz (violin student of Stephen Sims) was accepted into The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra Fall In October she performed in the James Ehnes Master Class. Julia was one of the winners of the CIM Preparatory Concerto Competition and will be performing with Saint-Saens Introduction & Rondo capriccioso with the CIM Orchestra on Tuesday, April 4, at 7:30pm. Moshi Tang (violin student of Liesl Hook Langmack) performed the Mendelssohn Concerto (mvt I) in October for the James Ehnes Master Class. In November, Moshi performed Vivaldi's Winter with the Erie Philharmonic in their annual education concerts for 5000 students. 5

6 Advanced Students (continued) Samuel Rosenthal (former violin student of Kimberly Meier-Sims) was accepted into the Fall 2016 CIM Young Artist Program studying viola with Jeffrey Irvine. He is co-principal viola of The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, and has attended The Interlochen Arts Center, Greenwood Music Camp and is currently planning to attend his second summer at the Perlman Music Program. He is a recent winner of the Suburban Symphony Concerto Competition, as well as the COYO concerto competition, performing in January of On Sunday, March 26, at 3:30pm he will be performing with the Walton Viola Concerto with the Suburban Symphony at Beachwood High School Auditorium. 9 10th Annual Suzuki Concerto Afternoon Thirty-three concerto performers played in Kulas Hall on Sunday, January 22 with our Volunteer Orchestra comprised of Sato Faculty, Cavani String Quartet members, and CIM Suzuki Pedagogy students for making this event possible.
