On 15th June the Cornwall Music Hub once again celebrated BBC Music Day with a full programme of free performances and workshops in St Austell s White River Place. School and nursery groups took part in vocal, samba, Taiko drumming and early years music workshops. In addi on, bands from the St Austell campus of Cornwall College performed in Aylmer Square throughout the a ernoon and early evening. They were joined by vocalists of Penrice Academy and the young players of the St Austell Chamber Orchestra. Radio St Austell Bay broadcast live from Fore Street throughout the day where there were also pop up performances by young singers and a harpist! The day s celebra on culminated in a performance by local funk legends, HotSpace! About the BBC Ten Pieces Ten Pieces is an exci ng ini a ve for students aged between The aim is to open up the world of classical music to a new genera on of children and inspire them to develop their own crea ve responses to ten pieces of music. The BBC have produced a series of 3 films, each one exploring 10 different key pieces of classical music, which are presented in a way which is both accessible and engaging to young people. These films are accompanied by teaching resources and adapted music arrangements which can all be accessed for free on the BBC Ten Pieces website. The Cornwall Ten Pieces Primary Proms 22nd March at the Hall for Cornwall As a Ten Pieces Champion, the Cornwall Music Educa on Hub encourages schools to engage with the programme and make use of the free resources. As part of this ini a ve, we will be holding two free concerts at the Hall for Cornwall on Thursday 22nd March especially for Key Stage 2 students. These one hour concerts will feature a selec on of the Ten Pieces repertoire performed by the Hub s Cornwall Youth Orchestra, with detailed explana ons and descrip ons of the pieces being performed. Schools wishing to bring groups to this free concert should contact the Hub office to book. Please CMEH@cornwall.gov.uk confirming number of places required, year group and which performance you would like a end (11.00 or 13.00) 2

Vocal Strategy Update Songfest 2018 The Hub s countywide celebra on of singing will return next Spring with another series of concerts in venues across Cornwall. This year s Songfest will be exploring Folk Songs collected in the South West which follow the calendar year in a performance called A Song for all Seasons. Songfest performance dates and venues in 2018 will run from the end of February to the end of March 2018; bookings are currently being finalised in readiness for the Twilight mee ngs for schools in September Schools will be allocated a performance venue and date in their locality; however we will be invi ng all schools in Penwith to perform on one of the two nights booked in Hall for Cornwall in 2018, following our trend of rota ng this performance space for different schools. If you would like to take part in Songfest 2018 A Song for all seasons please the Hub office cmeh@cornwall.gov.uk confirming your expression of interest. Become a Cornish Singing School and celebrate the power of singing! Last year, the Hub launched a scheme which recognises schools where singing is already a key part of school life and supports those who want to develop their own vocal strategy Cornish Singing Schools. The scheme was developed in collabora on with na onal vocal specialist, Baz Chapman, to create a framework which schools can use to develop their vocal ac vity. We were excited to present our first 34 Cornish Singing School Awards in March but we are keen to work with more schools! We can help to ensure your school is singing regularly and singing well. There is no cost for schools to get involved with the scheme and you will get access to advice, support and opportuni es from the Hub plus one year s free Sing Up membership. Any schools interested should contact Angela Renshaw: arenshawccc@gmail.com Free vocal support for schools As part of the Hub s ongoing Vocal Strategy we are offering schools the opportunity for free support through the School Engagement Vocal Outreach Workshops, with the aim of visi ng every primary school in Cornwall over the next year. These free one hour vocal workshops for Key Stage 2 pupils aim to help schools with their own vocal development and are delivered in school by one of the Hub s Vocal Leaders. The workshops are specifically for teachers or vocal leaders who are keen to con nue to improve the quality of singing in their own school, have a choir they wish to develop or are looking to set up a choir. The School Engagement Workshops will be organised to suit each school through discussion with the member of staff who will deliver it. There will then be an opportunity to discuss with them any par cular areas of support in terms of vocal development. Our team of Vocal Leaders are now contac ng schools to arrange visits but please contact the Hub office if you would like to arrange a visit CMEH@cornwall.gov.uk 3

Cornwall County Choirs The Cornwall Music Educa on Hub has a network of choirs opera ng throughout Cornwall for boys and girls. All our choirs are led by experienced vocal specialists and have numerous performance opportuni es. The choirs are open to singers aged 8 19 who a end school/ college in Cornwall. The singers spent the four days leading up to the concert working with the BBC Singers to learn the piece; John Adams Harmonium. They performed the piece live on the BBC TV alongside the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Chorus. On 22nd July, the Hub s Cornwall County Youth Choir performed at the Hall for Cornwall as guests of Brit Award winning trio, Blake, in the Stars of Stage and Screen show. 4

First Access Instruments for First Access Richard Lander School offered all their Key Stage 3 students the opportunity to learn either the saxophone or clarinet over the summer term. With nearly 1000 children learning an instrument, we hope lots of them will con nue with their musical journey and take up lessons! We have lots of class sets of instruments which are available for schools to hire at the subsidised rate of 70 per term for a whole class. These instruments are perfect for schools who would like to offer First Access to their students but do not have instruments of their own. Class sets available include: Clarinet & Clarineo Flute Saxophone Ocarina & fife (available for 35 per term) Keyboards Violin/cello/double bass Ukulele Guitar Trumpet, Cornet & Trombones African Drums & percussion Taiko Drums Indonesian Gamelan Samba Steel pans First Access free introduc on to learning an instrument for the whole class. The Hub is able to offer grants to schools to fund a music specialist to deliver whole class instrumental lessons. The grants are available to fund a 12 week programme called First Access which aims to introduce students in Key Stages 1 3 to learning an instrument. The programme consists of: An ini al planning mee ng with the classroom teacher and music leader 10 weekly 45 minute whole class lessons (students should learn the same instrument each week) A review mee ng with the classroom teacher and music leader The grants are available for any classes who have not previously benefi ed from the scheme (schools can access for more than one class). Schools will need to iden fy a suitable deliverer for the sessions and also provide their own instruments. The Hub can assist in this as we have a list of teachers/organisa ons who are able to deliver First Access and also sets of instruments which can be hired at the subsidised rate of 70 per set per term. Further informa on about the programme and how to access the funding can be found on onhub.org/first access For queries about the programme please contact: Tanya Moore on tmoore@cornwall.gov.uk 5

School Engagement and Support A key role of the Cornwall Music Educa on Hub is to provide support to schools in order to enhance the quality of music educa on both in the classroom and in lunch me/a er school ac vi es. We have commissioned Music Curriculum specialists to work with schools, either through projects or one off training visits. If you would like to arrange for one of these specialists to visit your school or are interested in working with them on a project, please them directly or contact the Hub Manager tmoore@cornwall.gov.uk School Engagement Leads Chris ne Judge Mid and West cjudge@cornwallmusicservicetrust.org Phil Montgomery Smith East pmontgomery smith@cornwallmusicservicetrust.org Georgina Bridle North gbridle@cornwallmusicservicetrust.org Patrick Bailey Secondary and Post 16 pbaileynew@gmail.com The School Engagement Leads employed by the Cornwall Music Service Trust and delivering on behalf of the Hub, worked with twelve schools across Cornwall to produce original composi ons as part of an exci ng collabora on with the Rambert Dance Company and local dance company, DR2. Each school worked with the teachers to compose, perform and record their own unique pieces in response to Christopher Bruce's famous work 'Ghost Dances' a er seeing the performance at The Hall for Cornwall. Schools worked with the Rambert animateurs and DR2 team to create dance pieces which were Photos courtesy of Steve Tanner then performed alongside the music, both recorded and live, in a final celebratory event at the Eden Project in July. The streets in Penzance were again brought to life in June for the annual Golowan fes val with the sounds of community Samba bands facilitated by West Cornwall primary engagement lead Chris ne Judge and CMST's Andy Bilham. Mousehole and St Maddern's brought children, parents, teachers, grandparents and friends together to create Samba bands which processed through the streets as part of the Mazey Day parades. St Day, Lanner and Treleigh primary schools worked with Chris ne Judge and Keith Allen on a Folk Music and Dance project. Each of the schools learned to sing exis ng folk songs as well as crea ng their own original songs from scratch, including some instrumental accompaniment. The children experienced a variety of tradi onal folk instruments including the Hurdy Gurdy, Mandola, Mandolin, Violin and Guitar. Each school also learned a folk dance. All schools performed in a final celebratory event. From 19 th 23 rd June, St Columb Major ACE Academy hosted a week of arts related ac vi es with an interna onal theme. The event was organised by Sue Christophers and Emma Parkyn from the ACE Academy and was supported by Cornwall Music Educa on Hub, Newquay Tretherras, Trevilgas Community College and Trio Dance. Pupils and teachers from 5 schools (Charlestown, Robartes, St Agnes, St Columb Minor and St Columb Major) took part in a range of music, dance, crea ve wri ng and visual arts ac vi es including; African drumming and dance, samba, Indian dance, steel pans, drums, string, brass, music makers, crea ve wri ng and illustra on, stop anima on and tex les. 6

School Engagement and Support Visits to the Orchestra Have you ever wondered what it s like to be part of an orchestra? Would you like to take your students to see an orchestral performance up close? The Hub s Cornwall Youth Orchestra are invi ng school groups and ensembles to visit their rehearsals to experience first hand what it sounds and feels like to be sat among the players of an orchestra. CYO meets monthly at weekends at Truro High School. Any schools interes ng in taking a group to visit the Orchestra, should contact the CYO Director, Tim Boulton, to discuss and arrange tboulton@phonecoop.coop 7

Open School Orchestras Open School Orchestras is a project u lising specialist technology, developed by Open Up Music, which allows students with Special Educa onal Needs to make music and play together as an ensemble. Over the last year, Simon Williams and Steve Hawker of the Cornwall Music Service Trust, have been working with Pencalenick School and Richard Lander ARK, funded by the Hub and Youth Music. Over the year the young players have developed instrumental skills, composed, improvised, and benefi ed from the social and emo onal skills which grow when working together as an orchestra. One of the high points was performing their composi ons at the Hall for Cornwall as part of the Hub s annual showcase, Hub Sounds. As many of them had not been in a large theatre before, let alone played for an audience of almost 1,000, they were understandably nervous, but did themselves proud! It was a transforma onal moment, giving them a new confidence by being on stage alongside Cornwall's other fine musicians, and a sense of what they can achieve as a group. You can see some of the young people making music, and reflec ons on the project from Helen Campbell, Head teacher at Pencalenick, in this short film: h ps://youtu.be/y9amgbgurru In the summer term, the Open School Orchestra from the ARK were joined by the Richard Lander GCSE music group in two workshops with Patrick Bailey. It was great to see how much both groups enjoyed working together. Two quotes from the Year 10's: It gave me ngles when we recorded, and I didn't know that it would be so musical. Richard Lander's Headteacher, Steve Mulcahy commented: This is such a wonderful video and clearly a wonderful project. Thank you so much to everyone involved! Both groups have a lot to offer each other, and a lot to learn from each other too. You can see the workshop performance here: h ps://vimeo.com/ Updates on other Hub supported projects Following the success of the first year, the Hub will be con nuing to work with partners, Cornwall Music Service Trust and Cymaz Music, to extend this project, enabling more young people in special schools and ARB units to par cipate in group music making, with the added support of funding from the West Cornwall Youth Trust. Phase 2 of this project will ini ally involve taster workshops and staff training in three more se ngs in prepara on for launching new ensembles in the new year. We will con nue to develop the exis ng ensembles who will be performing again soon. Summer Workshops Over the Summer, we worked with partners to offer a number of different holiday workshops for young musicians and singers, from Musical Theatre at Penryn College in conjunc on with Truro Stagecoach to Songwri ng at dbs Music and Sea Shanty workshops as part of the Pirates on the Prom celebra on. Look out for future workshops on our website and Facebook page! 10

Other Hub supported projects Cornish Ensembles Tour of Lake Garda The Hub provided a grant to three local youth ensembles to support their tour to Italy in July Below is an account of the trip wri en by one of the young players. My name is Abi Kaye, I am in year 10 at Wadebridge School, I play in Triggshire Wind Orchestra conducted by Janet Elston and this year, along with Budehaven Voices and Bodmin College Jazz Orchestra, we went on tour to the beau ful Lake Garda. This is how it all went: The trip started as fran cally as any other would. Over 120 staff and students filled two huge coaches, a trailer and ski box a ached to the back of them trumpets, tenors and mpani alike were crammed into a ny space. 30 hours of travelling east through Europe was completely and u erly worth it. Firstly, we had our concerts. Not many words can describe the unforge able atmosphere we all experienced during those three evenings. Our venues were all so scenic and picturesque the dainty li le Italian squares of Lazise, Pastrengo and Garda were such generous hosts, providing the migh est and most enthusias c of crowds. Star ng it off were BCJO each night the developing favourite for me, namely Minnie the Moocher, got even the least tuneful among us and the public to sing along with the hi dee hi dee hi s and ho de ho de ho s. Next up were Bude Voices; their gentle but pitch perfect take on Fleet Foxes White Winter Hymnal gave me goosebumps every me. And bringing up the rear were us, Trigg, the outstanding classic of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to top it all off but in fact, due to encores, the piece that ended the whole tour was actually YMCA! Who knew we d be dancing along to the Village People in a remote Italian village. Secondly came the ac on packed days out. Highlights include a spectacular 1780m ride up the mountain Monte Baldo and a ferry across Lake Garda to the village of Limone. Thirdly, and for me most importantly, this year's Italy trip has provided us all with an unmissable chance to make friends to last a life me. S ll I am amazed at how such a simple thing like music can bring hundreds of people together, our adventure this July thus proving the ul mate theory. How enlightening it was to get to know people with similar plans and ambi ons from other schools, and how the genuine glowing feedback we received from the public, our tour guides, even our coach drivers could only encourage us even more to carry on these developing talents we have for music. In conclusion, I guess this crazy plan for a holiday that Janet, Ben and Bethany thought up last year actually went quite well. Here s to the next trip! Anyone fancy a European tour? 11

Terpsichore Early Music Ensemble Terpsichore was formed 4 years ago as a school group, but is now a CMST ensemble and open to all instrumentalists. The name of the group comes from a collec on of dances wri en by Praetorius in 1612 called Terpsichore and we specialise in performing music from the Renaissance and Baroque era. All of the music we play is arranged to suit the collec on of instruments we have to hand and many of the students play 2 instruments and will change between pieces. We use a variety of instruments including a Loriman Pipe and Cornamuse which are early reed instruments; the whole range of recorders from contra bass to sopranino; woodwind, brass and strings. We aim to produce an authen c early sound world and try to blend the old and new instrument sounds. We rehearse once a week at Truro College on a Tuesday from 4.15pm. We perform in various concerts, master classes and compeons throughout the year. We recently took part in a master class with Ashley Solomon Chair and Head of Historical Performance at the Royal College of Music and the director, baroque flau st and recorder soloist with Florilegium and have been invited to perform at the Greenwich Interna onal Early Music Fes val in November. For further informa on or if anybody wishes to join in the adventure please contact: swhomersley@cornwallmusicservicetrust.org Other updates NEW MUSIC THERAPY TEAM at CMST The Cornwall Music Service Trust welcomed, in June 2017, a new team of music therapists to work at hospitals, schools, care homes and other venues across Cornwall. There are ten music therapists currently in the new CMST team and it is growing. To thine own self be true: How music therapy can help people to just be themselves At the end of an excellent and comprehensive talk in to a group of people suffering from Parkinson s disease and their helpers in Bodmin, specialist nurse Alison Rundle delivered a final word of advice which seemed to cause anxiety to many of her audience. Some mes you just have to be yourself. She went on to explain to the audience that a er all their efforts to manage their lives, a er all their dealing with the drama c changes to their life, they should take me out, relax and express something about who they were and how they were feeling. For many, this is easier said than done. Si ng at the back of the audience (and about to follow Alison Rundle s talk with a music therapy workshop), I connected the bewildered frowns and twitches in her audience with the difficulty of what she was advising. It is o en very difficult to be yourself; for some it is something that they need help to achieve and this is what music therapy is very good at. When you play music, it seeks out hidden feelings and reveals them, it carries all the weight of emo ons which words cannot express, it strips away all the defences and posturings which many people adopt in order to present a more acceptable face to the world. Music therapy can raise, explore and express emo ons which have rarely if ever seen the light of day. Above all else, to thine own self be true is how Polonius in Shakespeare s Hamlet ends his big speech advising his son Laertes how to behave. I don t think he realised what a big ask this was. For many of the audience at the Parkinson s event, the difficulty of being themselves and the need for help to do so, was only too apparent. I can t think of one person with whom I m currently working who is not being helped to be themselves. The process may take me but that s what music therapy does. Robin Bates September 2017 Further informa on about the Trust s therapy service can be found at 12

Other updates Music for Youth Regional Fes val Next Spring, Music for Youth will be returning to Cornwall to hold another of their regional music fes vals in Truro. These events are an opportunity for ensembles, bands and choirs to perform and receive feedback from MFY mentors. They are free to take part in and open to any type of group, style of music, and standard of playing. Groups must be of two or more musicians, aged 21 or under. A number of performers from each regional fes val are invited to perform at the MFY Na onal Fes val in Birmingham in July. Some mes these performers will then go on to perform at the MFY Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in November. The Cornwall Youth Orchestra has been invited to the School Proms twice in the last 3 years! Applica ons for the Truro Fes val, taking place on the 23rd and 24th, February, will open in October.
