4 january 15 january Athenia Trio Guest Artist Recital The Athenia Chamber Ensemble presents fun and interactive performances that feature flute, oboe, and bassoon. Athenia is a faculty ensemble at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Founding members Alison Brown Sincoff, flute, Michele Fiala, oboe, and Matthew Morris, bassoon have collectively performed in the United States, Canada, Italy, Germany, England, France, Russia, Panama, and Argentina. They decided to form Athenia in 2009 in order to have an outlet to perform new music and to engage audiences in new ways. The group enjoys discovering unusual works for the ensemble and hopes to continue to add to the repertoire. 22 january The Beethoven Project: The Complete Violin Sonatas - Part I Violin students from the studio of Prof. Sergiu Schwartz, the William B. and Sue MarieTurner Distinguished Faculty Chair in Music and pianist Alina Sarkisyan, graduate assistant of Prof. Alexander Kobrin, the L. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano, take on the unprecedented project of performing the ten Sonatas for Violin and Piano by Ludwig van Beethoven. This concert opens the Beethoven Violin Sonatas three-concert cycle and features Ms. Sarkisyan performing Sonata in D, Op. 12, No. 1 with Diego Gabete, violin; Sonata in A, Op. 12, No. 2 with Milen Maksimov, violin; Sonata in E flat, Op. 12, No. 3 with Jing Yang, violin; and Sonata in A minor, Op. 23 with Likai He, violin. 7:30 pm, Studio Theatre free admission january 27 january Sergiu Schwartz, violin Alexander Kobrin, piano Faculty Recital Faculty artist Sergiu Schwartz, the William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Faculty Chair in Music, has garnered worldwide critical acclaim as one of the best violinists of his generation (Le Soleil, Canada), while Fanfare magazine notes that Schwartz s CD should provide a great sense of optimism that a younger violinist still commands such assured rhetoric and expressive resources. Heifetz, Milstein, Oistrakh, Isaac Stern, Francescatti - they all come to mind. He is joined by faculty artist Alexander Kobrin, the L. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano, a First Place/Gold Medal winner of international piano competitions including the Van Cliburn, Busoni, Hamamatsu, Glasgow, and Chopin competitions. Mr. Kobrin is critically acclaimed for his technique, artistry, and commanding virtuosity. The program includes works by Beethoven, Dvořák, and Brahms. 28 january Viola Studio Recital Be awash in the rich tones of the Schwob School of Music s viola studio in this recital by the students of Prof. Zoran Jakovcic. 5 february january 3 february Earl Coleman Studio Recital The Voice Studio of Professor Earl Coleman, the William and Isabelle Curry Eminent Faculty Scholar Chair in Voice, presents an Afternoon of the African American Spiritual. The recital features solo spiritual arrangements of Margaret Bonds, Hall Johnson, Lena McLin, Undine Smith Moore, Moses Hogan, and Mark Hayes. Some performing have been winners of vocal competitions at the national, regional, and state levels. 6 february 13 February CSU Jazz Band february 18 February A/B Duo Meerenai Shim, flute Chris Jones, percussion Guest Artist Recital The CSU Jazz Band, under the direction of Dr. Alexander Pershounin, head of the Schwob School of Music s Jazz Studies program, opens the 2013 season with a fiery blend of classic and new jazz styles. Come swing with us and you are guaranteed to enjoy a great evening of music! 17 February Spotlight on Violin! Violin Studio Gala Concert The newly formed A/B Duo, composed of flutist Meerenai Shim and percussionist Chris Jones, performs new works for flute and percussion by Janice Misurell-Mitchell, Steve Danyew and others. Many works recorded on Meerenai s new CD are also featured, including the flute and Gameboy piece by Matthew Joseph Payne. 19 February Stusek - Estoppey Duo, saxophones Guest Artist Recital This concert features American saxophonist Steve Stusek and Swiss saxophonist Laurent Estoppey performing contemporary works for two saxophones in combination with multiple electronic devices. Schwob School of Music saxophone professor Amy Griffiths also performs with the Duo. 6:00 pm, Studio Theatre, free admission Artist Faculty Sergiu Schwartz, the William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Faculty Chair in Music, is joined by the Schwob School of Music s outstanding, prize-winning violin students in a concert featuring romantic and virtuoso works from the violin repertoire. 7 february 19 february Josh Kearney, conductor Student Lecture Recital Joshua Kearney presents his Master of Music Lecture Recital on Gustav Holst s masterwork for band - Hammersmith: Prelude and Scherzo. The lecture concludes with a complete performance of the work by the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble with Kearney conducting. february 23 february Sharpe - Zohn Duo Jose Antonio Escobar, guitars Guitar Symposium Concert 21 february CSU Wind Ensemble Tonight s Wind Ensemble concert features two masterworks for wind band, Gustav Holst s dark yet boisterous Hammersmith and Percy Grainger s masterfully scored depiction of bucolic English folksongs, Lincolnshire Posy. Faculty artists Susan Tomkiewicz, English horn, and Robert Murray, trumpet, perform Aaron Copland s haunting and reflective Quiet City. 8 february / march march 28 february 17 march Tonight s Wind Orchestra concert showcases a variety of musical styles, from the driving opening work Frenergy to Karel Husa s pictorial Al Fresco to Weinberger s Polka and Fugue from Schwanda the Bagpiper. Music education professor Sean Powell appears as guest conductor. On March 17th at 7:30pm, The Schwob School of Music Horn Studio will present an evening of solo and chamber music. The concert will culminate in a horn choir performance under the direction of horn professor Anna Dodd. Selections will include works by Bach, Victoria, and Mozart. CSU Wind Orchestra Horn Studio Recital 18 march Guest Artist Recital - LegacyLive! Concerto Competition Winners Concert CSU Philharmonic Acclaimed for his versatility in both opera and concert, William Ferguson commands a wide range of repertoire, from Mozart to Monty Python. The Opera News has described his singing as having grace, and striking selfpossession. He holds both Bachelor s and Master s degrees from The Juilliard School and is a native of Richmond, Virginia. Tonight s program will include some of Schubert s most beloved Lieder; Britten s My Beloved is Mine and I am His, Op. 40; and arrangements of songs from plays. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano, for a mesmerizing evening of works by Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann. Well known for his powerful presence and elegant technique, this evening he reveals a complex and uncanny side through his Schumann interpretations, of which The New York Times writes,... there is something to be gained from taking Mr. Kobrin s unusual readings on their own terms. 21 march CSU Contemporary Ensemble The Contemporary Ensemble presents an ambitious and adventurous program featuring giants in the modern musical landscape beginning with John Luther Adams haunting Dark Wind, followed by Arvo Pärt s mystical Spiegel im Spiegel. Next is a new work by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Wayne Peterson featuring guest conductor Dr. Paul Vaillancourt. The program finishes vibrantly with Olivier Messiean s masterpiece, L oiseaux exotiques (exotic birds) with piano soloist and Alexander Kobrin, the L. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano. Join faculty artists Wendy Warner and Yien Wang for a cello and piano recital featuring works by Martinu, Janácek, and Prokofiev. 28 march CSU Jazz Ensembles Featuring Conrad Herwig, trombone 7:30 pm, Studio Theatre, free admission The jazz trombone master of our time, New York s Conrad Herwig, wows the audience in perfomance with the CSU Jazz Band, directed by Dr. Alex Pershounin, head of jazz studies. Mr. Slutsky has performed on nearly every continent both as a soloist and chamber musician. He is also a widely-sought-after pedagogue and the Chair of the piano department at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. 4 April Zoran Jakovcic, viola Alexander Kobrin, piano Faculty Recital April 5 - Keith Kirchoff, piano - Guest Artist Recital The Electroacoustic Piano Pianist Keith Kirchoff has been called a virtuosic tour de force whose playing is energetic, precise, [and] sensitive. Kirchoff s work involves promoting under-recognized composers and educating audiences of the importance of new and experimental music. The audience is surrounded by the sounds of instruments and voices as the performers use Legacy Hall to its spatial potential.

11 april 8 april Student Chamber Music Recital Join our great students in a unique experience of collaboration under the direction of distinguished faculty. april 14 april Francisco Bernier, guitar Guest Artist Recital - LegacyLive! Hailed by La Stampa as a future superstar of the guitar, Francisco Bernier has already begun to dazzle audiences worldwide. A native of Spain, Maestro Bernier performs works of the great Spanish masters including Francisco Tarrega s Carnaval de Venicia, and Julian Arcas s Fantasia La Traviata. 5:00 pm, Studio Theatre, free admission 8 april Guitar Chamber Music Student Recital Sponsored by the Hon. Teresa P. Tomlinson and Mr. Wade H. Tomlinson 4:00, Legacy Hall, admission $20 Students of the Schwob School of Music will perform in guitar quartets and ensembles of guitar and mixed instruments. 11 april CSU Wind Ensemble 14 april Kimberly Cone Studio Recital The Voice Studio of Professor Kimberly Cone will perform an evening of Duets and More. Students will sing duets by Schumann, Mozart and Mendolssohn as well as favorite selections from the Musical Theatre repertoire. Please join us! 15 april CSU Trumpet Ensemble The final Wind Ensemble concert of the year features an eclectic mix of music, showcasing the flexibility of the modern wind band. To open, we Blow it Up, and Start Again with a work by composer Jonathan Newman, a raucous piece with elements of funk and dub-step. We start again with music from 16th century Italian composer Carlo Gesualdo, conducted by our guest Robert Ambrose, director of bands at Georgia State University. Following a beautiful new work by rising composer Roger Zare and a Mexican dance, several faculty artists are featured in a funky, edgy piece by New York composer Andy Akiho. The Wind Ensemble closes with Donald Grantham s variations on George Gershwin s blues lullaby, Prelude No. 2 in C#, performed at the piano by Alina Sarkysian, graduate student of Prof. Alexander Kobrin. Witness the premier concert of CSU s internationally recognized Trumpet Ensemble. The repertoire includes original works for trumpet ensemble from the baroque and renaissance as well as premiers of several new works by American composers written for the CSU Trumpet Ensemble. 18 april A Musical Mosaic: Images of sound and light University Singers This concert features the University Singers in solo and ensemble repertoire that will encompass several centuries as well as many languages and styles. The voice majors demonstrate their versatility in small and large groups designed to feature them individually and collectively.

12 april 21 april CSU Percussion Ensemble april 25 april Tragedy and Triumph CSU Wind Orchestra The concert begins with Steven Bryant s Triumph, but quickly moves to the tragic with works depicting the 1945 destruction of Dresden and the unsuspecting Pompeians in a bacchanalian dance during the days before the volcano Vesuvius s eruption. After a beautiful setting of Biebl s Ave Maria, the Wind Orchestra concludes with Yashuide Ito s Gloriosa, an epic symphonic poem about the hidden Christians of 16th Century Japan. Please join us for this night that ends in triumph. 26 april Piano Studio Recital The Schwob School of Music welcomes Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Wayne Peterson. The concert features three world premiere performances highlighting the faculty group Columbus Brass and the CSU Percussion Ensemble. Also featured are performances by the CSU Chorale under the direction of Prof. Constantina Tsolainou, faculty artist singer Michelle Debruyn, and Prof. Amy Griffiths in a performance of Jim David s new saxophone concerto with percussion ensemble entitled L oiseau dans l espace april Double Reed Studio Recital Schwob School of Music presents a recital of the double reed studios. Students of Dr. Susan Tomkiewicz and Dr. Ron Wirt perform works for oboe and bassoon. Witness a stellar celebration of music with L.Rexford Whiddon Chair in Piano Alexander Kobrin and the rising stars of the Schwob School of Music piano studio. Prepare to be impressed by performances bold, beautiful, and virtuosic. 28 april CSU Trombone Ensembles 6:00 pm, Studio Theatre, free admission 24 april CSU Philharmonic The CSU Philharmonic s final concert of the season features colorful music from around the world starting with Silvestre Revueltas rhythmically propulsive Sensemaya, led by student conductor David Jang. Dr. Amy Griffiths is the soloist in Alexander Glazunov s mesmerizingly beautiful Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra. The program concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov s sensual Scheherazade, showcasing all members of the orchestra in this dazzling work, led by Ethel Foley Distinguished Chair Paul Hostetter. Join the CSU Trombone Octet and Trombone Choir for their spring concert.
