2 From the Hands of our Artisans You ll find our instruments in the hands of musicians from all ages and levels all over the world. Whether we are making a professional level instrument or a student model, our aim is to provide the musician with an instrument that sounds and plays as best as possible, is reliable, and is good for both the user and the environment. When you pick up a Yamaha instrument, take a moment and think about how this instrument made it into your hands. How it started from a sheet of metal or length of seasoned wood, was shaped into form by the skilled hands of a master craftsman, then assembled and adjusted, again by hand. Yes, by hand. With all of the advanced technologies we have at our disposal, we still find that the best way to get some jobs done right is to do it by hand, and it makes no difference as to whether the instrument is a custom pro level instrument, or a student model for a beginner. Constantly in contact with the instruments we make, we are concerned with what goes into them since it not only affects their sound and playability, but the player and the environment as well. That s why Yamaha instruments are made using lead-free solder. Much like making music, crafting instruments is an art that requires dedication and a passion for perfection. Through our art, we bring the instrument to form, through the musician s art, that form comes to life. We take great pride in passing our art on to musicians young and old, and watching them mature and bloom with the products we make. 1

5 Toneholes Handmade Flute Options Drawn Toneholes When ordering a custom built Handmade Flute there are many factors to consider. In addition to the basic configurations there are a number of other important variables which help determine the character of your instrument. For an overall view of the possibilities available to you, see the following list of options. If you require more information, please contact your Yamaha Handmade flute dealer. WOODWIND Instruments Mechanical Options Walls are drawn upward from the body material, giving the flute a broad, light sound. Soldered and Undercut Soldered toneholes with undercut inner edges give a strong sound with a lot of life in the tone. Headjoint C# Trill Key An additional lever and tonehole which are useful for B to C# trills, but can also be used to facilitate a number of other trills and tremolos. Brilliant H M Y K C Tone Color E Split E Mechanism A This helps give more stability and better centered intonation to the high E. Dark Heavy Free Resistence Clutch E Mechanism A switch allowing players to turn on or off the Split E mechanism as desired. TypeM The type M headjoint has the sound concept of a rich, colorful sound and tonal freedom and was specially developed for the YFL-900MV Series & YFL-800MV Series flute. G# Open Removing G# tonehole enables better intonation of high E, even without a Split E Mechanism. Super Bocals The shape of a bocal is just as important as the materials from which it is made and the method used for its construction. Yamaha offers four types to match the widest possible range of musical requirements. C Type P Type This configuration has a smooth, consistent feel from the lowest to highest tones for excellent playability. The C type bocal features extremely accurate intonation with rich tonal character. This is the student Super Bocal model, and is an ideal choice for all-around playing. Outstanding high-range playability and tone make this bocal ideal for the soloist or firstchair orchestra player. In addition to high register security, the P-type bocal also offers a strong midrange with well-balanced low tones. E Type The E type bocal combines comfortable breath resistance with a beautiful round tone which is constant throughout the instrument s range. Pianissimo low-notes are especially easy to play with this bocal. An excellent match for the symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, or other ensemble. YFG-811 Type C-type E-type P-type V-type YFG-812C V Type The V type bocal combines many of the best properties of the C, E and P types. It features easy playability, outstanding expressive capability, and an exceptionally well-defined tonal core. Excellent clarity for both classical and modern compositions.
