1 LEADER S OVERVIEW Revised 1/2017 FOR THE LEADER C ONT ENTS Merit Overview Merit Requirements Checklist Answer Guide handout for boys INT RO D UCTION is a ministry of the National Youth Department of the Assemblies of God. It is designed to help students discover, develop, and deploy their God-given arts-based talents and abilities so they can begin to use them for ministry. Districts conduct Fine Arts Festivals each year, typically in the spring, where students perform or present their work for evaluation by qualified evaluators. Individuals or groups who receive an advancing rating are eligible to participate in the National Fine Arts Festival conducted each summer. FA C I L I T I E S & R E S O U R C E S N E E D E D Verify with your youth pastor about the status of Fine Arts in your church. If no program currently exists, discuss how you can assist in getting one started. Visit the national Fine Arts Web site at faf.ag.org to learn more about the program. Contact your district Fine Arts coordinator for information on district festivals, including dates, locations, fees, and deadlines. Set up an informational meeting with parents to discuss Fine Arts and the plans for your group to be involved. Discuss any travel and other costs that may be involved, as well as practice schedules, application deadlines, and fees. 2 LEADER S OVERVIEW FOR THE LEADER T E A C H ING TH IS MER IT There are currently over sixty categories in which boys can participate, individually or in groups, ranging from music and drama to T-shirt design, short story, and short sermons. This merit has the potential to be a powerful tool in helping boys discover their God-given talents and abilities, and exploring the ways in which those abilities can be used in ministry to others. Pray regularly for God s wisdom and direction as you lead your boys in this challenging and exciting endeavor. And above all, have fun! L EAR N I N G AT H O ME Boys in Royal Rangers may earn this merit by participating in Fine Arts with their church s youth program, on their own, or as a group within Royal Rangers. Any work done in Royal Rangers should be coordinated with the other leaders in your church involved with Fine Arts.

4 LEADER S ANSWER GUIDE This Answer Guide provides an outline of the content for this merit. There are no lesson plans for this material. 1. Notes Research and explain the purpose behind the program. For information on Fine Arts, visit the National Web site at faf.ag.org. The and the local Fine Arts programs affiliated with the festival work to help students discover, develop, and deploy their ministry gifts. Because of the diverse blend of gifts within the body of Christ, there are many different areas students can select to be trained and matured in their skills and talents. It is the goal of every Fine Arts program to discover the gifts a student has, whether it s in music, drama, writing, preaching, etc. Many students do not see the gifts that they have been given, and it is the job of the Fine Arts coordinator, as well as the youth pastor and the leadership of the church, to help students find their area of giftedness. Students are encouraged to try a wide variety of areas, even those outside their comfort zone, in hopes that they will find new areas of ministry. When a student has discovered their areas of giftedness, the Fine Arts coordinator will facilitate the development of the gift by assigning the student or group of students a coach. Through regular training sessions, group rehearsals, and loving critique, the students are refined and strengthened in their area of giftedness. The evaluation process is further enhanced at the local and National Festival by trained, experienced evaluators, all with the purpose of enabling students to become their absolute best. As the students grow in their gifts, it is the job of the Fine Arts coordinator to work with the youth pastor, senior pastor, and other leaders to give the students opportunity to use their gifts in hands-on ministry. Whether it is singing in the youth group, preaching in the adult service, performing a human video in an evangelistic outreach, or any other form of ministry, the process of deploying students into ministry is the ultimate goat of Fine Arts Festival, and will hopefully begin a lifelong commitment to ministry by the students. 2
