1 Piano Festival November 2017 Program

2 Dear Music Lovers, W Michael aefliger Executive and Artistic Director LUCERNE FESTIVAL WE LOVE NOTES AS MUC AS WE LOVE NUMBERS. IS TAT MUSIC TO YOUR EARS? >> Discover our commitment to music at juliusbaer.com/sponsoring henever Claude Debussy sat down at the piano, he knew how to enchant his audience. Never have I heard more beautiful piano playing, recalled the Englishwoman Louisa Liebich. The pianist Maurice Dumesnil spoke of the loveliest piano sound he ever encountered: ow was he capable of producing that? I noticed that he sometimes stretched his fingers to the point where they were almost flat, especially for gentle chord sequences. e stroked the keys and didn t attack them vertically but rather skimmed over them, observed Dumesnil. In piano playing, as in life in general, a variety of roads can lead to one s goal. And so the Piano Festival in Lucerne again offers a vast spectrum of techniques, playing styles, and interpretations. For this year s edition, we ve assembled a first-class, fivestar roster of artists for you to enjoy. It s literally an A-plus piano festival featuring five capital A s : Piotr Anderszewski, Leif Ove Andsnes, Martha Argerich, Kit Armstrong, and Yulianna Avdeeva. And there will be no shortage of pianistic bliss with the magnificent Russian virtuosos Evgeny Kissin and Daniil Trifonov. Nor with their colleagues Gabriela Montero, Sophie Pacini, and the sisters Güher and Süher Pekinel. And if you re interested in glimpsing the future of the keyboard field, you won t want to miss the three Debut concerts presenting Christopher Park, Aglaia Graf, and Beatrice Rana. On the eve of the Debussy year of 2018, when the music world pays homage to the 100th anniversary of his death, we will eplore the roots and influences that shaped this French composer during our Day of the Keyboard, whose theme is Roads to Debussy. We ll also acknowledge modern music with an omage to Claudio Abbado. And we haven t forgotten to include jazz in the offerings, both in a large-scale context (with the Orchestra of LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI and Andreas Schaerer) and in a totally relaxed setting, after the concerts, in Lucerne s loveliest bars during Piano Off-Stage. We re indeed looking forward to a spectacular Piano Festival this fall! Warm regards, Julius Baer is the leading Swiss private banking group and present in some 50 locations worldwide. From Dubai, Frankfurt, Geneva, Guernsey, ong Kong, London, Lucerne, Lugano, Monaco, Montevideo, Moscow, Mumbai, Nassau, Singapore to Zurich (head office). 3

For Argerich there are no bar lines, no uniform tempo, no fixed hierarchy of voices. Everything is in constant flow, is how the Frankfurter Rundschau attempted to describe the secret of her Schumann interpretation. Argerich takes the greatest possible freedom afforded by the written score thereby creating a new concerto, so to speak. It is no longer Schumann. Yet there is nothing of Martha Argerich. It is a kind of music that is so free that no one owns it any longer. You can experience this miracle at the opening of the 2017 Piano Festival, when the legendary Argentine pianist performs her favorite concerto. She will be joined this time by the fabulous Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen conducted by Vladimir Jurowski: an orchestra that has won multiple awards for its Beethoven and Schumann recordings. Mendelssohn s Scottish fits in perfectly with this lineup. Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd. Main Sponsor Introduction to the Concert KKL Luzern, Auditorium with Susanne Stähr (in German) 11

Kit Armstrong, who made his celebrated debut at LUCERNE FESTIVAL last year, approaches the composer from no fewer than three perspectives. First he will play two Pièces de clavecin by François Couperin, a master of the French Baroque whose works Debussy perceived as the epitome of everlasting beauty. Charles Valentin Alkan meanwhile is a representative of the generation of great virtuosos from the 19th century: the French Liszt, so to speak. And Armstrong will present one of the composer s contemporaries, Louis Vierne, whom Debussy credited with ingenious discoveries in the area of organ sound. The 25-year-old Armstrong himself also performs as an organist. Clearly he is a phenomenal multi-talent: alongside his career as a pianist, he is a busy composer, not to mention that he received his degree in mathematics and the natural sciences and is fluent in four languages. This is a brilliant person, as you can tell in every moment of his performances. The rubric of Impressionism is especially associated with the music of Claude Debussy ( ): a musical language that also often speaks in images on the piano, one which encompasses images of thoughts and feelings. Indeed, the French master expanded the expressive possibilities of the instrument into new and fascinating dimensions of sounds as well as rhythms. What is important when playing Debussy? What should a performer heed in the score and what should he or she change and emend? What challenges need to be overcome? These and related questions will be the focus of Martin Meyer s piano lecture for the Day of the Keyboard. The lecture will look back at the traditions of leading Debussy performers but will also consider the present (in image and sound) and younger talents. In the process Meyer will show that Debussy s piano cycles from the Préludes through individual suites to the ever-modern, even revolutionary Études are a powerful pinnacle of the genre. By the way: short excursions into Maurice Ravel may also be permitted! 13

The German-Italian pianist, who made her LUCERNE FESTIVAL debut in 2014 and has already been named Young Artist of the Year in the renowned International Classical Music Awards, will initially trace Debussy s genealogical lineage from Frédéric Chopin through his early piano teacher Marie Mauté de Fleurville, Debussy was ultimately a pupil of a pupil of the Polish composer he admired so much. With Robert Schumann, Sophie Pacini will focus on a different Romantic, one around whom there developed a veritable cult in France in the second half of the 19th century. Schumann s ideal of open form and metrical freedom, which he implements in the Scènes mignonnes from Carnaval, undoubtedly influenced Debussy s desire to wear masks and his notion of the poetry of music as well. If Debussy had a great weakness for the French harpsichordists, his admiration for Johann Sebastian Bach, their German contemporary, was even greater. Old Bach, the father of us all, he once remarked, and he declared that Bach is the oly Grail. For his part, Bach was fascinated by the qualities of French music and found inspiration for his instrumental works in such dance forms as the courante, the gavotte, the passepied, and the bourrée. All of these can be found in the Overture in the French Style, with which Yulianna Avdeeva opens her program. And given that Chopin was likewise a great Bach admirer his Préludes are a tribute to The Well-Tempered Clavier she will trace an intercultural line across two centuries, exploring traditions that led to Debussy s Estampes. The Russian Avdeeva, who won the Chopin Competition in 2010, was a hit with Lucerne audiences in 2016 during the Special Event Day devoted to the theme of PrimaDonna : phenomenal technique and an unparalleled spirit, wrote the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. The Day of the Keyboard Package If you attend all three Day of the Keyboard recitals, the total ticket price is CF 120 (instead of CF 150). See the ticket order form. 15

Which is why she always concludes her recitals with free fantasias based on themes that the audience sings out to her. So you can already start thinking about how you d like to challenge this pianist: with themes by Mozart or Beethoven? Or maybe with a Swiss folk song? Gabriela Montero loves this sort of interaction with the people who attend her concerts, because it is a way to tear down the imaginary wall between the stage and auditorium and to encourage a more relaxed atmosphere. But even when she performs the works of the classical repertoire, spontaneity and passion, emotions and enthusiasm are what matter to her. With her love of invention and fresh panache, she will present Shostakovich s Second Piano Sonata, Schumann s Scenes from Childhood, and the Children s Songs by the jazz pianist and improviser Chick Corea. 16 Blue notes are just as much part of the piano summit in Lucerne as Alberti bass figurations or the Neapolitan sixth. Jazz experts also perform: at Piano Off-Stage, the small but fine jazz festival within the festival. We have invited eight internationally acclaimed masters of improvisation who will enchant us late into the night with swing and boogie-woogie, tenderly dreamy or blazing and grooving performances, from Wednesday to Sunday. Their venue will be just where this art is shown to best advantage: in the atmospheric ambience of Lucerne s bars and restaurants, in other words, off stage. The kickoff for Piano Off-Stage is the traditional opening in the KKL Luzern, when all of the artists introduce themselves with samples of their skills all of which is followed by a joint jam session. Piano Off-Stage November in selected bars and restaurants in Lucerne You can find a complete overview of all Off-Stage concerts and detailed information about all of the pianists starting on p

But Christopher Park, who was born in 1987 into a GermanKorean family, hates such competitive events and avoids them. The idea of a tournament is not congenial to art, he explains. Béla Bartók rightly saw that competitions are more suitable for racing horses than for musicians. Even so, he himself commands a list of distinctions: he won the Rheingau Music Festival advancement award in 2012 and the Bernstein Award in 2014, and in the season he was a Rising Star of the European Concert all Organisation. Christopher Park has concertized with the Bamberg and Vienna Symphonies, the DSO Berlin and English Chamber Orchestras, and the Frankfurt Radio and NDR Symphony Orchestras. A pianist like a thunderbolt, wrote the Tagesspiegel when Park played Rachmaninoff s Second Piano Concerto in Berlin. Unparalleled sensitivity, according to Die Welt, while the Süddeutsche Zeitung has raved about his thrilling style of attack. 18 Outsiders have a hard, if not impossible, time trying to tell them apart. Which is not surprising, since Güher and Süher Pekinel are identical twin sisters. Many have attributed the breathtaking homogeneity that characterizes their playing as a piano duo to this fact, but Süher Pekinel counters: That is pure speculation, believing more in a telepathic communication. The two Turkish sisters, who have appeared together since they were six, have followed this principle for some time with an unorthodox arrangement of their grand pianos: rather than sitting opposite each other, frequently they perform with their instruments staggered one next to the other, which precludes any eye contact. Of course we take on a risk doing that, but it allows us to feel spontaneous impulses more strongly. Mozart s great D major Sonata, K. 448, and Debussy s cycle En blanc et noir are both classics of the repertoire for two pianos that they will perform. After which the tone will become Spanish, with music by Manuel Infante and Ravel s Rapsodie espagnole. 19

So the Basel-based Aglaia Graf, who was born in 1986, will introduce herself at her Debut recital with one of her own works as well. Birth of Gods is the title of the triptych in which she refers to the beginning of esiod s Theogony and describes the birth of Gaia, Tartaros, and Eros: that is, of Earth, the Underworld, and Love. Aglaia Graf explains that she has always been fascinated by Greek mythology. er father, the flutist Peter-Lukas Graf, used to often read her The Odyssey when she was a child. I am seeking my own language, she observes, describing her credo. As a composer she shows respect for the instrument I treat the piano as a piano and as a performer she places herself in the service of the works she performs: You have to let the music speak and be so far removed that it can come to life. For that, a precept from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is often her guide: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. 20 Both of them were celebrated pianists. The young Ludwig van Beethoven was admired in his new chosen home city of Vienna as a keyboard virtuoso at first, before he found recognition as a composer. is racing tempi and the effortlessness with which he mastered the most technically intricate passages took his audience s breath away. Sergei Rachmaninoff meanwhile was one of the first international stars in classical music, cheered in Europe as well as in America. Beethoven was, incidentally, also part of his repertoire, for example the First Piano Concerto, which he performed in 1939 at the Internationale Musikfestwochen Luzern, now known as LUCERNE FESTIVAL. Piano works by Beethoven and Rachmaninoff together in one in recital: that s not something one gets a chance to hear every day. Evgeny Kissin makes it happen: Of course you cannot compare the genius of Rachmaninoff with the genius of Beethoven, but he has long since stopped being a salon composer, explains Kissin. After a four-year hiatus, the Russian piano master returns to Lucerne and with his performance will refute all such prejudices. Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd. She has performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Filarmonica della Scala, the Orchestre National de France, the London Philharmonic, and the Orchestra dell Accademia di Santa Cecilia. Still, newspapers have written that she has an old soul. Or that she is somehow reminiscent of Martha Argerich, as the London Times declared. Beatrice Rana takes all this cooly and continues to do what she likes best: to study new repertoire. She would have liked most to have lived in Leipzig of the 1830s, she told the Guardian, getting to know Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, and Franz Liszt. So it s no coincidence that she has selected works by the last two names for her Debut program at LUCERNE FESTIVAL. 22 e made his brilliant Lucerne Piano Festival debut in 2012 with Chopin s Préludes, and he dazzled audiences here in the summer of 2014 with the Polish composer s Second Piano Concerto. Now Daniil Trifonov gives his first major recital in the KKL and again everything revolves around Chopin. The evening will culminate in the Piano Sonata in B-flat minor, with its famous funeral march. But Trifonov, the superstar of the young pianists, will approach the mythos from the perspectives of other composers: he will play the Chopin Variations by Federico Mompou and Sergei Rachmaninoff, as well as a colorful bouquet of short homages to Chopin by Schumann, Grieg, Barber, and Tchaikovsky. This program allows him to display the highly diverse facets of his artistry. e can do everything, said Manuel Brug in Die Welt, wondering about what constitutes the Trifonov secret. To which he immediately gave the response: Along with his magical attack, he especially fascinates through this dreamy yet certain, vividly pulsing treatment of rhythm. When this pianist plays, music comes to life, shines, and breathes. Can anything better be said? Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd. 13 A good mixture of the familiar and exotic Saturday, 25 November Piano Lecture KKL Luzern, Auditorium Leif Ove Andsnes on his programs Admission free limited number of seats Martin Meyer lecture (in German) Young and Old Saturday, 25 November Recital KKL Luzern, Concert all Ticket prices CF 170/130/90/60/30 Seating map 4, p. 43 Event no Leif Ove Andsnes piano Jean Sibelius a selection of five piano pieces ca. 17 Jörg Widmann Idyll und Abgrund ( Idyll and Abyss ). Do old people understand more about music? What is it that conveys a convincing performance of a work: the wisdom of the grey-hairs or, to the contrary, the fire of young upstarts? We might put this diplomatically: each age has its merits. While teenagers suddenly grow out of themselves and into a given piece in the rush of the moment, mature people disclose to us other, perhaps deeper secrets. But of course the realties sometimes look different. Sometimes the piano world goes wild when late romantic stirrings are awakened in older artists, while the youngsters can seem to be wiser than the wise. Our roundtrip will use examples to show what, where, how, and to whose benefit or disadvantage the result is when figures from either end of the age spectrum touch the keys, with the hope that all will be or at least end well. By the way: humor is a prerequisite, at least for the audience. 24 A recital for those who enjoy exploring. When the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius is mentioned, we tend to think of his magnificent symphonies or his tone poems based on the myths from the Finnish epic, the Kalevala. But piano pieces by Sibelius? They do exist, and they are worth encountering, as Leif Ove Andsnes will prove. Three years after his spectacular Beethoven Journey through the classical master s complete piano concertos, the Norwegian pianist now returns with a solo recital that will be both exquisite and deeply meaningful. For example, he will juxtapose Schubert s heavenly Three Piano Pieces D. 946 with the Schubert Reminiscences by Jörg Widmann from 2009, whose title Idyll und Abgrund ( Idyll and Abyss ) points to the ambiguity so characteristic of Schubert. The concert s second half offers the finest fare for connoisseurs of classical music: Beethoven s Tempest Sonata will find Leif Ove Andsnes setting out on metaphysical terrain, while with Chopin he can show himself to be a poet at the piano. This concert is under the auspices of the Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL 25

Yet Andreas Schaerer doesn t just sing, he also produces the most absurd effects with his voice. e grunts and chuckles, murmurs, chirrups, and cries; is an expert at traditional scat singing; and is a master of vocal percussion. Simply put: it sounds like Andreas Schaerer has swallowed an orchestra. But that s not enough for the Swiss vocal acrobat and Echo Jazz Award winner. Which is why he suddenly decided to put an actual orchestra on the stage, complementing his splendid band ildegard Lernt Fliegen with 60 classically trained musicians from the ranks of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY. At the 2015 Summer Festival, ildegard Lernt Fliegen took off into new, orchestrally expanded heights. The live recording of this concert was a sensation, and Andreas Schaerer subsequently took The Big Wig on tour. And now comes a reunion in Lucerne, with old hits, but certainly also with a surprise of one sort or another. The late Claudio Abbado, who died in 2014, left his mark on LUCERNE FESTIVAL like no other conductor. But in Berlin as well, where he helmed the Philharmonic from 1989 to 2002, his work set standards and continues to bear fruit today. To acknowledge Abbado s commitment to contemporary music, the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic has been offering the Claudio Abbado Composition Prize since 2006: in 2016 the recipient was Vito Žuraj, a Slovene born in The prize also entailed a commission to compose a new ensemble work for the Academy students. For this institution also continues to benefit from Abbado s legacy, as he bequeathed the assets of his Music Foundation to the Academy. Žuraj s Alavò, which will receive its world premiere at the beginning of November 2017 in Berlin, is the main work on this matinee featuring the star soprano Mojca Erdmann and the French pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger. The concert begins with two works by Žuraj s teacher Wolfgang Rihm, the director of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY. And in the middle things will become quite romantic with Schumann s superb Piano Quintet. 27

Not because his piano works are technically so fiendishly complicated, but rather because of the interpretive issues that drive some to despair: how, for instance, do you play the accompaniment figures without making them sound monotonous, like a clattering sewing machine? ow do you get the melodic voices to sing? And how do you convey emotions without absurdly romanticizing the works? The Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski commands this rare art of playing Mozart such that the music acquires an existential dimension. In Mozart, tragedy blends with comedy, he explains, and that is what makes his art so rich. But Anderszewski is also entirely in his element with aydn, for he has a great sense for well-made musical wit, which he can fully relish here. After his inspiring recital at the 2015 Piano Festival, this time he will devote himself to two Piano Concertos, one each by both of these Classical masters: there could be no finer conclusion. Not everyone who travels to the piano summit held in Lucerne in late November has to be a master pianist. e or she can also only wish to become one. For LUCERNE FESTIVAL is a place where the generations can engage in exchange. Through master classes, renowned artists encounter talented young people with whom they share their wisdom and experience. Each year, as part of the Piano Festival, we offer a master class in collaboration with the ochschule Luzern Musik. In 2017 this will be led by Ferenc Rados, one of the most celebrated piano teachers of ungary. Born in 1934 in Budapest, he taught for many years at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in his native city, where his students included the likes of Zoltán Kocsis, Dezső Ránki, and András Schiff. Ferenc Rados will work with the participants of his Lucerne master class to prepare a repertoire that ranges from the Baroque to classical Modernism. Auditors who are interested in listening in are cordially welcome, and for students of the ochschule Luzern Musik, entrance is free as a matter of course. 16 Ayako Shirasaki Jazz also has its prodigies: Ayako Shirasaki was only a teenager when she won numerous competitions in her native Japan and began performing regularly in Tokyo s jazz clubs. After her classical training, she transferred to Kenny Barron and Ted Rosenthal at the Manhattan School of Music, quickly making a name for herself in the New York scene, and she has played with such artists as Kenny Garrett, Lewis Nash, and John Benitez. She has also toured in Germany and Japan. Alessandro d Episcopo Maurice Imhof Just 21 years old, he s already been invited twice to the West Coast Ragtime Festival in Sacramento. Maurice Imhof, winner of the Swiss Youth Ragtime Piano Competition in 2011 and currently a student at the Zurich University of the Arts, is someone worth paying attention to. e performs regularly with David Ruosch and Buddha Scheidegger. And he loves to present classical music in jazz arrangements as on his debut CD, Classic Meets Jazz November Piano Off-Stage What can you do after the curtain has come down in the KKL but you still want to enjoy some music? It s very simple: just go for a walk through Lucerne and look for a bar or a restaurant and enjoy the finest piano jazz with a drink or snack. This year we ve invited eight internationally celebrated masters of improvisation. From Wednesday to Sunday they will offer over 40 concerts as they play in rotation: every evening they will move to a new venue, so that each of the pianists will end up playing at all of the venues. 30 When he was a 13-yearold, Alessandro d Episcopo decided to devote his life to music. More precisely: to jazz. And so after he finished his classical training at the conservatory of his native Naples, he moved to Montreux to earn his degree in jazz. Since then he has become an integral part of the Swiss scene, whether as a member of Jürg Morgenthaler s J.M. Rhythm Four or as art of a trio with ämi ämmerli and Elmar Frey. Olaf Polziehn Olaf Polziehn plays classics from the Great American Songbook and his own compositions, readily transitioning between styles from swing to modern mainstream. Born in 1970 in Ludwigsburg, he studied in Cologne with such figures as John Taylor and has quickly advanced to become one of the most sought-after jazz pianists in Germany. e has played as a sideman with legends like Benny Bailey, Bobby Durham, and Red olloway and currently teaches at the University of the Arts in Graz. 31

18 Foundation Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL Since its founding in 1966, the Foundation Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL has made supporting the work of one of the world s most renowned classical music festivals its goal. The moral and financial support that is obtained through this non-profit organization is invaluable for LUCERNE FESTIVAL. The Friends contributions, about eight percent of the total budget, are a significant contribution to the Festival s financial security and sustainability. Aside from this funding source, LUCERNE FESTIVAL is mainly supported by private and corporate sponsors and receives only a small contribution in the form of subsidy from the public sector. The Friends have thus become an indispensable partner of the Festival. But not only is supporting the Festival of today a matter of central concern: they also hope to create a sustainable basis for the artistic activity of tomorrow by fostering such important projects as the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY and LUCERNE FESTIVAL YOUNG. The circle of the Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL offers an opportunity to share in the experience of the Festival in all its variety and to deepen your musical experience through such exclusive events as artist meetand-greets and visits to rehearsals; through the Friends you can moreover make contact with an interesting and international group of like-minded peers. LUCERNE FESTIVAL is grateful to all of its Friends for their long-standing and loyal support. 34 We would especially like to thank our following patrons: Thomas Abegg Nachlass Ernest I. 25 A Recipe for Music: The KKL Luzern An enjoyable prelude before the first beat. Welcome to the Restaurant RED: Creative cuisine and 15 GaultMillau points in KKL Luzern. Lunch Monday to Friday from 11:30 to 13:30 Dinner Wednesday to Sunday and on event evenings from 17:00 Reservations by telephone on KKL Luzern Europaplatz 1, 6005 Luzern fon , It s one of the best-sounding locations in the world: the KKL Luzern s concert hall, created by Jean Nouvel and renowned for its phenomenal acoustics and exquisite architecture alike. This is where the majority of LUCERNE FESTIVAL s concerts take place. With a feeling for geometry, forward-looking thinkers in the 19th century had already come to realize what really matters: the sound is best when the concert hall is shaped like a shoebox. The American acoustician Russell Johnson emphasized this even more: from the beginning he understood that a modern concert hall needs to be acoustically variable, that Bach and Bruckner require different sonic environments. The acoustic canopy over the stage, a total of 50 heavy echo chamber structures weighing up to eight tons, plaster reliefs, and all of the materials that are used help to implement the highest level of acoustical quality. Along with double doors that swallow noise and a ventilation system that operates well below the threshold of audibility, Russell Johnson established a foundation for what any good acoustical environment requires: the sort of absolute quiet in which sounds are allowed to resonate in all their dynamic range from the gentlest pianissimo to the mightiest fortissimo. This fastidious attention to quality extends to the culinary sphere: with their uniquely composed menus, the Restaurant RED (rated 15 points by Gault Millau), the World Café, and the Seebar round out the total experience of the KKL Luzern.
