2 BACHELOR PROGRAMME CATHOLIC CHURCH MUSIC ENTRANCE EXAM 1. Part a) Written exam about music theory and hearing test (please bring music sheet) Knowlege of music theory, skills in listening to rhythms, intervals, major and minor triads, seventh chords in the form of note dictation; pinpointing errors and aural recognition. b) Sight singing: Sung repetition of single tones, intervals, harmonies and melodies; Sight singing of tone sequences without text and a texted melody (e.g. choral part); Meeting intervals, as well as triads and inversions within the octave range from a given tone c) Sight reading on the piano: From the sight reading of a simple choral set noted on three systems if possible from the spiritual repertoire d) Song learning: Preparation of a hymn or canon with an ensemble after a reasonable preparation time 2. Part a) Organ The following program has to be prepared: 1) A Chorale prelude by J.S. Bach 2) A moderate, non chorale composition from J.S. Bach or another composer of the 17th or 18th century (except J.S. Bach Eight Little Preludes and Fugues 3) A Composition chosen by the candidate Technical management and musical arrangement will be assessed In exeptional cases, the examination board may allow foreplay on the piano instead of the organ. In this case, the following program is to be prepared: 1) An Etude on the difficulty level of: Czerny - Art of Dexterity op. 740 / Cramer - 60 Etudes / Chopin - Etudes op. 10 and op. 25 2) A Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach 3) A Composition chosen by the candidate Technical management and musical arrangement will be assessed. b) Singing Performance of an hymn by heart (difficulty of J.S. Bach: Gesänge zu Schemellis Musicalischem Gesangbuch Nr. 2, 7, 12, 19, 29, 30, 37, 47 and 59 or C.P.E. Bach: Ausgewählte Geistliche Gesänge or M. Reger: Geistliche Lieder op. 137) or an aria in German. It assesses primarily the expressiveness and resilience of the voice
3 BACHELOR PROGRAMME CATHOLIC CHURCH MUSIC PROOF OF PROFICIENCY IN GERMAN Candidates, whose first language is not German must provide evidence of proficiency in German at Level B1 before being admitted to the degree programme. The following documents are accepted as proof of adequate proficiency: 1. A B1 certificate from an ÖSD examination centre ( ÖSD Zertifikat B1 (ZB1) ) or a Goethe Institute examination centre ( Goethe-Zertifikat B1 ) The OSD Central Examinations Office ( and the Goethe Institute ( both maintain lists of authorised international institutions and language schools that hold examinations for the B1 certificate. Sample papers can also be obtained from the above websites. Where possible, it is recommended that students obtain a German proficiency certificate in their home country before taking the entrance examination. 2. A pass certificate for a German test This examination is designed for students who have not had the opportunity to sit for the German proficiency certificate. It should be noted that a level equivalent to B1 will be required. The attendance of this test is not compulsory. 5 ELECTIVE SUBJECTS BACHELOR PROGRAMME CATHOLIC CHURCH MUSIC Students must successfully complete elective subjects amounting to 14 hours. The following courses are recommended: Choir Practical Training 7, Choir Exercises 7, Hymnology 1-4, Children and Youth Voice Training, Music History 3,4, Organ Studies Lecture 1,2, Voice Theory 1,2, Exercises in Gregorian Choral 5-8, Breathing Techniques for Singer 1,2, Children Choir Conducting 1,2, Sunday Practicum BACHELOR THESIS In the bachelor programme two seperate bachelor thesis have to be written in two different courses. Each bachelor thesis receives 5 ECTS credits. The Bachelor Thesis can be written in following courses: a) Liturgic b) Gregorian Choral or Semiology c) Organ Studies d) Repertoire of Church Music BACHELOR EXAMINATION Prerequisite for the Bachelor Examination is the positive completion of all compulsory subjects, elective subjects and positive marks of the two bachelor thesis. The Bachelor Examination is a board examination (performance in front of an Examination Committee) The examination includes the main artistic subjects Choir and Ensemble Direction, Organ and Improvisation. a) Choir and Ensemble Direction The examination in Choir and Ensemble Direction takes place in two parts: 1. Part: Rehearsal work The candidate has to choose a programme that contains 10 choral pieces (also single sets of multi-part compositions) of several eras, styles and genres as well as two recitatives (secco, accompagnato) 2. Part: Public Performance b) Organ and Improvisation The examination in Organ and Improvisation takes place in two parts: 1. Part: Improvisation und Liturgical Organ Playing For the exam Improvisation and Liturgical Organ Playing, the candidate receives the task two hours before the exam 2. Part: Organ The candidate has to choose a programme from the following groups of works: 1) A work from the time before J.S. Bach 2) Two works by J.S. Bach (Difficulty of Praeludium and Fugue in F minor), one of which is chorale-bound difficulty of the Leipziger Choräle 3) A work from the 19th century (on the difficulty level of organ sonatas by F. Mendelssohn) 4) Two works from the 20th and 21st century (in the difficulty of the organ sonatas by Paul Hindemith) one must have been created after One of the works of the groups 1, 2 and 4 must be a Cantus fimus-processing
6 MASTER PROGRAMME CATHOLIC CHURCH MUSIC ENTRANCE EXAM Permission to the master programme Catholic Church Music is the completion of a professionally qualifying bachelor programme for Church Music or an equivalent study at a recognized Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution and the successful completion of the entrance examination for the master programme in the chosen areas of specification ahead. The candidate has to choose at least two areas of specification, one of the two must be Choir and Ensemble Direction or Organ and Improvisation. The Master Programme Catholic Church Music is divided into six areas of specification: a) Choir and Ensemble Direction b) Organ and Improvisation c) Voice d) Gregorian Musicology e) Church Composition f) Early Ensemble Music Choir and Ensemble Direction The candidate has to choose a programme that contains 10 choral pieces (also single sets of multipart compositions) of several eras, styles and genres as well as two recitatives (secco, accompagnato). Voice The candidate must prepare a romantic clerical song and an Baroque clerical aria. It assesses primarily the expressiveness and resilience of the voice. Gregorian Musicology The candidate must prepare an Introitus, a Gradual, an Alleluia, an Offertory and a Communio in different modes. It examines the candidate s ability to sing, translate comment and conduct these pieces, with consideration for melody construction and semiology Church Composition Written work (duration three hours): A small composition based on the task of the teacher of church composition (piano may be used) Early Ensemble Music The candidate has to accompany a highly Baroque and an early Baroque piece as continuo player / continuo player (eg: A song from the "Musikalisches Gesang-Buch" by G. Ch. Schemelli, a "Kleines geistliches Konzert" by H. Schütz ). The candidate will receive the pieces half an hour before the exam for preparation. Furthermore, 2 pieces from the early and the high Baroque are to sing, e.g. from: H. Schütz: Kleine geistliche Konzerte; G. Ph. Telemann: Der harmonische Gottesdienst; Cl. Monteverdi: Salve Regina. There are two choral works from the period before 1720 to prepare

Students are entitled to submit a Scientific Thesis instead of the Master Thesis. While the main emphasis is laid on the artistic part, the artistic master thesis also includes a written thesis. This written thesis must elucidate the artistic part. MASTER EXAMINATION The Master Examination serves to provide evidence of having attained artistic maturity. The precondition for being able to take the Master Examination is the successful completion of all the compulsory subjects, of the elective subjects and of the area of specification, as well as the attainment of a positive mark for the Master Thesis

For all other students including those who are stateless and those whose citizenship is undetermined: 726,72 per semester Information on possible grounds for a waiver or refund of tuition fees is available from the Department of Studies and Academic Services.
