1 2015 Summer Arts Enrichment Program Dates: Monday, June 29 Friday, July 24 Time: 8:30 am 12:20 pm Monday thru Friday Program will be closed Friday, July 3rd in observance of Independence Day Place: Huntington High School 188 Oakwood Road Cost: $120 per course plus $50 (non-refundable) Registration Fee Fee includes all course materials and a Huntington Arts Council Summer Arts Enrichment Program T-shirt ELIGIBILITY Courses are open to all students entering grades 4-9.** Students from surrounding school districts are welcome, provided they supply their own instrument. **Portfolio Course is open to grades 9-12 only. SCHOLARSHIPS Harlie Treanor Memorial Scholarship Fund: Two full-time scholarships will be awarded to Huntington School District students who are eligible for free/reduced lunch. Stephanie Flynn Memorial Scholarship Fund: Limited partial scholarships are available for Huntington music and art students who are eligible for free/reduced lunch. Please complete the scholarship forms along with your registration requesting assistance ASAP. Scholarships will be given on a first come, first serve basis. Notification will be made via in late June. SECURING AN INSTRUMENT* *Students attending districts other than Huntington will need to secure instruments from their home district. Huntington School District owns the instruments listed below, which may be rented for a maintenance fee of $40 (subject to change). This fee covers the summer and following school year. Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Saxophone, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba & Percussion. Contract and pick up information will be sent to new students in June. Instruments will be distributed at Woodhull Intermediate School. Payment for district instrument use must be made with a separate check to Huntington Music Dept. (Instrument fees should be paid at time of Instrument Pick-Up) The district does not provide flutes, clarinets or trumpets. These instruments may be rented or leased from music stores. 3 Music Class Descriptions 2015 Computer Music Composing Everyone can be a composer in this class! Students with little or no music reading skills will learn to create their own compositions in our music lab using simple programs like Garage Band to produce their own CD! Beginning & Intermediate Piano This course is for students with no prior piano training as well as students with some experience. Students will learn note reading as well as how to improve upon their playing using dynamic & articulation markings. Students will use electric keyboards in the music lab so that each student may progress at their own pace. Open to all students gr 4-9. Please indicate level on your registration form. Beginning & Intermediate Guitar Gr. 5-9 This course will cover the basics of the guitar for students who have not played before, or who have a limited familiarity with the instrument. The course will cover all six strings and songs for different combinations of strings, power chords, the blues and the blues scale, basic improvisation, simple chorus and basic rock and folk guitar songs. Students will be encouraged to bring in songs of their own for study and performance. Guitars are available for use or you may bring your own. School of Rock Gr. 5-9 HAC rock/pop Band! A course for more experienced singers & instrumentalists including guitar, keyboard, bass, drums and vocals, in which the students will learn a repertoire of rock, pop and R&B classics and perform them as a real rock band! The basics of improvisation will be covered also, so that students can take a solo on any given instrument. Students will also be encouraged to bring in songs of their own choosing for study and performance. A recording will be made at the end of the course, and a performance given featuring all of the students in the class. Intermediate Orchestra Gr. 5 6** This course is open to students who have at least one year of experience playing an orchestra instrument. It provides the student with the opportunity to improve his/her playing technique in a performance group setting. New Wave Orchestra Gr. 7-9** This course is open to students who have had experience in the Intermediate Schools Advanced Orchestra or Finley Orchestra. Pop, Rock, Jazz & Fiddle Music will be performed along with Classical Chamber pieces. It challenges the student to improve his/her playing skills in a performance group setting. **Students should speak with their school orchestra teacher about their orchestra placement. Intermediate Band Gr. 5-6 This course is open to students entering grades 5-6 who have one ore more years playing experience. It provides the student with an opportunity to improve his/her playing techniques in a performance group setting. Jazz Band & Improvisation Gr. 6-9 This course presents the essential elements of jazz performance, including basic technique of style, phasing and simple improvisation. Open to band students entering grades 6-9. Beginning Band & String Lessons Gr. 4 This class is provided for students who wish to learn how to play the violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French Horn, trombone, baritone, tuba or percussion. This is a beginning level class designed for students who have NEVER played the instrument and have been assigned this instrument by their orchestra teacher (including percussion). Lesson book is provided. Maxing Your Instrument Potential in Band Gr. 7 9 Enjoy playing your instrument? Want to improve your solo playing as well as play in different ensembles? Then this is the class for you. Students will learn new solo pieces, as well as techniques to improve their playing and sight reading. Great for students who want to play duets and trios and get a head start on their NYSSMA piece! Students will learn to assess their own playing as well as learn how to perform in small groups. Come challenge yourself! Musical Theater Learn songs and scenes from a Broadway show. Students will be singing and acting in this creative class as we prepare for a small performance. All students are encouraged to sign up for the class regardless of acting/singing experience. Glee Club! Come lend your voice to the Glee Club! In this class, we will be singing a wide variety of music and some Gleeinspired songs as well. You will learn about the different voice parts that make up a choir, and learn how to sing in harmony. Whether you enjoy classical or pop music (or anything in between), you're sure to find something that you like!

4 Music Class Descriptions 2015 (continued) Pop & Show Tunes Vocal Workshop! Students will enjoy the benefits of vocal training as well as learn a solo vocal piece. The class will learn a variety of NYSSMA solos, in addition to Pop and Broadway repertoire. The program includes solo performance technique as well as how to assess oneself when performing. Have fun while receiving professional vocal coaching! Percussion Ensemble Gr. 6-9 Explore the world of percussion through the art of ensemble performance. Perform with your friends and learn how to play a wide variety of percussion instruments from the snare drum and xylophone to garbage cans. This course is designed for music students grades 6-9(or 5th grade with strong rhythmic ability and with recommendation from their school's music teacher). Though no prior percussion training is required, students must have strong rhythmic ability. Visual Art Class Descriptions 2015 Ceramics Students will learn how to hand build exciting projects with ceramic clay. Vases, coil pots, name plates, picture frames and animal forms will be fired to a stone like hardness in the kiln and painted by the students in a variety of glazes. The projects will be fired a final time to bring out a colorful, glasslike finish. Approximately 3 full projects will be completed. Polymer Clay Have fun with this awesome clay that can be sculpted, carved, stamped, textured and used to create many different kinds of fun and useful objects. Learn the secrets of building multi-colored polymer "canes" to produce amazing checkerboard, spiral and geometric patterns for your unique creations! Clever Crafts Explore making art from a variety of materials including recycled and found objects. Get creative, help the environment and have fun creating sculptural pieces, collages and more! Modern Jewelry Making Who doesn't love a fantastic bracelet, especially one that she creates herself!? In this new class, students will learn how to work with and create bracelets out of leather, beads, metal, clay and so much more. Come prepared to work, and learn new techniques for filling your arms with beautiful works of art. Teen Portfolio Program Gr **THIS IS FOR GRADES 9-12 ONLY!!** Geared towards the art minded High School student, this course will concentrate on observational drawing and advanced use of the elements and principles of art and design. Using a variety of media, students will be able to grow as artists while creating a collection of works to strengthen their portfolio. This course is ideal for the student putting together a college portfolio, building a breadth section for AP, or any art-loving student looking to further develop their artistic skill set. Putting together a portfolio on one s own can be a daunting task- instead come enjoy a creative and fun summer experience! Please note: this is a 3 hour course students MUST take all 3 hours. Cost is $330 plus registration fee.

5 Visual Art Class Descriptions (continued) 2015 Chalk it Up! Painting with Annie Sloan World recognized Annie Sloan Chalk Paint can easily be used to transform many things. In this class students will learn the basic beginning steps to working with Annie Sloan. They will use the one to two color application process, painting frames, initials, decorative boxes and more. They will then learn how to distress and finish a piece. Students will also work collectively on one large piece of furniture that will then be donated to the school. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to have fun! The Art of Aviation I Learn about the awesome world of Aviation through hands on projects. Projects will include model plane assembly, RC plane flight simulation and actual RC plane flight! Participants will learn how to fly 3 channel planes such as the champ and super cub. Students will learn a great deal about historic planes and how different types of aircraft work. This is a fantastic course that combines art, technology and physical skills into a fun learning experience. The Art of Aviation II If you enjoyed the Art of Aviation I, you will love the second course in this series. The Art of Aviation II expands upon the skills and concepts taught in the Art of Aviation I. Participants will become more familiar with specific types of aircraft and learn why they actually fly. Participants will also learn how to fly 4 channel RC aircraft and perform aerial maneuvers such as the split-s, barrel rolls, stalls and inverted flight on the RC model T-28 Trojan! 3D Sculpting & Design This new course will focus on learning the structure and proper anatomy of the human head to help students create their own Bust! Lessons will also include designing accessories, character development, and creating various 3D elements to create a visual story board or 3D scene. Students will work with modeling clay, as well as other mixed media elements and will focus on detail, creative design and how to properly use sculpting and modeling tools. Students are encouraged to bring in photos or reference pictures to help in the design process. Class can be messy so please dress appropriately! Play Chess with the LI Chess Nuts! Students will learn basic moves, strategies and techniques in the game of chess; our fast learners and students who are already familiar with the game will move to more advanced playing techniques. Lessons will teach students how to play the game, and once learned, how to then improve their playing. After lessons, students will play each other, while being supervised and coached by the teacher. Movement Course Descriptions 2015 Dance It Up! Jazz/Hip-Hop The combination of jazz and hip hop is ideal for beginner dancers. Jazz/hip hop class teaches fundamental jazz steps and combines the elements of hip hop moves and contemporary music. Students will learn the necessary elements of jazz, which are crucial to success in hip hop. Student will also learn hip hop moves which require the coordination and balance learned from jazz technique. Class will begin with a light stretch, then progress onto some center technique work, across the floor movements, and will finish with some choreography which could include some basic break dancing moves to the newest hits! Centered around having fun! Tap it Up! Tap is an exciting form of dance in which dancers wear special shoes equipped with metal taps. Tap dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats. Class will begin with warm up, progress to learning different rhythmic patterns, across the floor and finish with choreography! We will be using music from both show tunes to give them a "classic tap" background as well as some new hits to teach them what is known as the "hoofing" style. Centered around having fun!

6 NEW! ~ABOUT OUR STAFF~ Ms. Basedow has been dancing since the age of two and has studied many different styles of dance, including Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Modern Dance technique. Ms. Basedow holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance from Montclair State University and currently teaches at Moves & Motions & Dance Dynamics Dance Studios. Throughout the years, she has trained with many distinguished dancers and choreographers who have inspired her to pass on her knowledge to others. Mr. Battista has been teaching band in Huntington for 13 years and is an aviation enthusiast! He has been a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics for 5 years and is a flyer at the Lufbury Aerodome at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, NY. Mr. Belton currently teaches at Finley Middle School. After studying drawing & painting at the Art s Students League in Manhattan, the School of Visual Arts and the New Jersey Center for the Arts, Mr. Belton went on to graduate from Columbia University and received a Masters of Fine Arts at Vermont College School of Fine Arts. Mr. Belton continues to create his own work in drawing, painting and ceramics. Ms. Jablon, who teaches elementary Band in Huntington, holds a Bachelors & Masters in Music Education, as well as Administrative Degree from Hofstra University. Ms. Jablon is the chairperson for the Huntington Band Fest; her chamber ensembles have premiered several works by renowned composers, and Ms. Jablon has had her bands perform for the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum! Mr. Giachetti currently directs the Huntington HS Senior Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble and Co-Directs the Huntington Blue Devil Marching Band. Mr. Giachetti graduated from Crane School of Music with a Bachelors in Music Education as well as a Performance Certificate in Percussion Performance. He also holds a Masters degree in Music Education, with concentration in Wind Band Conducting, from Hofstra University. Mrs. Leonardi, who has been teaching strings for 34 years, is the concertmaster of the Northport Symphony and has held many offices in local and state music education organizations over the years. Mrs. Leonardi currently teaches strings at Huntington HS. Mrs. Mainville is the Choral Director at Huntington HS and holds a Bachelors & Masters of Music from Crane School of Music and Boston University. Mrs. Mainville is heavily involved with the HS musical and also directs two a cappella groups at the high school. Mr. Mainville is excited to be in his fourth year at the Summer Arts Enrichment Program. In addition to his many years as a performer, Mr. Mainville has also been teaching guitar for nearly 20 years. He received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Classical Guitar Performance from the Crane School of Music. Mr. Mayer is joining the program this year to introduce 3D Sculpting & Design! Mr. Mayer holds a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from LIU and for the last 10 years has been training as both a two dimensional and 3D artist with strong influences of Americana, Art Nouveau, POP culture and Modernism. Mr. Mayer is a regularly showing artist at various galleries, venues and events in the Long Island & NYC area. Mrs. Sturtz holds an Associate s degree in Fashion Merchandising from the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising as well as a Bachelors in Art Education from Adelphi University. Mrs. Sturtz s knowledge of fashion led her to designing fashion displays at Anthropologie; currently, she works as an accidental entrepreneur, giving old furniture new life. Her work is often sold at Heaven Can Wait in Rockville Center. Mrs. Valerio holds a Bachelors of Fine Art from Parsons School of Design as well as a Masters in Art Education from LIU. Before becoming an art teacher, Mrs. Valerio worked in graphic arts at various companies, including Glamour Magazine, Newsday, & International Typeface Corp. Mrs. Valerio currently teaches at Huntington HS and Finley MS. Long Island Chess Nuts will be joining us for a brand new Chess class this year! Chess Nuts teachers are all great Chess players and are well experienced working with children. LI Chess Nuts is in their 18 th year and currently teach over 2000 students each year in Nassau and Suffolk County schools. ww.huntingtonarts.org

Students should be dropped off in the main lobby where they will find signs for each class. Our HS student counselors will escort students to and from class as well as to the restrooms. We encourage students to bring peanut-free snacks and plastics water bottles if they are staying for more than one class. In order for our staff to provide a safe and educational environment, we ask that students leave any unnecessary electronics at home; we ask that students who must bring cell phones to please keep them in their back packs and on silent-mode (no texting or game playing will be allowed during class time). For the safety of our students, all students must be signed out each day. Students who are picked up at 9:20, 10:20 or 11:20 can be signed out at the main desk. For the 12:20 pm pick-up, parents must meet their child at the sign for their last class where they can be signed out with their HS Student Counselor. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. The student photographs will only be used by the Huntington Arts Council to promote awareness of our arts programs and our organization. 12 Stephanie Flynn Memorial Fund and the Harlie Treanor Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund administered by the Huntington School District 2015 Summer Arts Enrichment Program Scholarship Application The Summer Arts Enrichment Program has a limited number of scholarships available. The scholarships are available for students who are eligible and registered for Free or Reduced Lunch in the Huntington School District. The Stephanie Flynn scholarships will be awarded to students who are participating in music & art courses. The Harlie Treanor Memorial Scholarships will be awarded to students based on need at the discretion of the sponsoring family. All scholarship applicants must submit this form, a letter of recommendation from the student s art or music teacher, and a completed program application and payment for one course plus the registration fee ($170.00)*. We also recommend that you include a letter about your child and any futher information that you would like us to consider. Available scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis. Scholarship deadline is June 1st. Receiving a scholarship in the past does not guarantee scholarship assistance for the 2015 program. *Payments will be held until scholarships are awarded. Once scholarships are awarded, all balances are due within 10 business days. Students will NOT be permitted to attend classes until balance is paid in full.
