We continue to be the first and only institution to include courses in contemporary commercial music (CCM) vocal pedagogy for academic credit in a graduate degree program. The best and the brightest voice professionals from all vocal disciplines worldwide, have been drawn to the CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute for the past seven summers and have high praise for its worthiness. 3 Three Levels of Certification Somatic Voicework sm The LoVetri Method This body-based system of training for all styles of CCM incorporates techniques derived from the disciplines of speech pathology, acting, movement and yoga. It draws upon ideas taken from body awareness disciplines such as the Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais and traditional approaches from classical training. LoVetri s decades-long What you ll learn work with voice science, research and medicine is a core element of Somatic Voicework sm. It promotes self-knowledge, musical intuition and the artistic uniqueness of each person and voice. Instructional materials are flexible and can be adapted to fit each professional s individual approach. Participants must attend all hours to receive certification for each level. Level I July Basic Application Learn an organized pedagogical approach based upon vocal function and the principles of voice science and medicine. Educate the eyes and ears about the healthy use of the voice in any CCM style. Enhance perception and increase awareness of sound and feeling. Augment existing skills by sharpening aural discrimination and increasing the accuracy of the diagnosis of vocal health and production issues. Sing in the three main registers and two basic vowel sound qualities to facilitate accurate demonstration of CCM production. Examine belting and the term mix and clarify other jargon. Level II July Advanced Application Determine how vocal exercises work and how to apply them. Master The Solution Sequence under the guidance of the Institute faculty. Organize style and health into a cohesive whole. Handle today s demanding music with expertise. Address age, including children as young as 5 and adults beyond 65. Examine style demands and time frame (open-ended versus pending performance). Facilitate serving any student s needs in an appropriate and timely manner. Level III July Repertoire, Problem Solving and Voice Medicine ** featuring Guest Experts Korovin and Marks Improve techniques to work with professionals or professional-level amateurs to solve the problems working singers encounter in the marketplace. Learn fast and easy pitch-matching techniques, useful for actors, dancers and other novice singers. Examine remedies for voices that sound healthy, but still exhibit functional problems. Watch Broadway coach Robert Marks work on song choice and audition requirements with singers. Explore medical terminology, common causes of vocal pathology, typical surgeries for singers and the effects of medication with Dr. Gwen Korovin. Learn simple ways to deepen acting skills quickly. ** As a courtesy to the community, doctors and SLPs may attend Dr. Korovin s lecture at no cost. This method makes complete sense to me, and is what I ve been looking for since I started teaching. It is exciting to me both as a teacher and a performer to see the possibilities Jeanie s method can provide. Kassy Coleman Executive Director, The Soul s Song LLC Post Certification Courses * July Gospel Singing Styles: History, Pedagogy, and Performance taught by Dr. Ronald H. High This course is designed to provide participants with an overview of gospel music history and discuss how vocal styles in this genre emerged, developed, and changed to meet the demands of the times. The instructor will integrate history, pedagogy, and performance practices with practical application of gospel singing. The course will focus on the question, What is the gospel sound? Participants will become familiar with and apply vocal techniques that are utilized by gospel artists. There will be opportunities for participants to listen to gospel artists through recordings and to view video excerpts for the purpose of aural and visual analyses. The instructor will incorporate basic terminology and methods used in Somatic Voicework SM The LoVetri Method when discussing techniques in gospel singing. The instructor will also make pedagogical recommendations for the teaching of gospel singing in an academic setting. The culminating activity of the course will be a presentation of gospel repertoire featuring the participants and instructor. July Training and Assessing Injured Singers taught by Dr. Wendy LeBorgne This course will provide participants with a means to prevent, identify and remediate potential vocal injury in singers. Each participant will be able to complete a systematic voice evaluation and create an appropriate plan for referral and/or remediation. Additionally, participants will be able to identify appropriate strategies for remediation of vocal injuries. This will be a workshopstyle course with multimedia including video examples, audio examples and live performance/assessment. First time I have been able to sing high notes without resorting to falsetto. 5 Institute co-founded in 2003 by Donna Gullstrand and Edrie Means-Weekly About CCM Institute Faculty Jeannette LoVetri, creator of Somatic Voicework sm The Lovetri Method, was chosen in 2008 by Dr. Robert T. Sataloff to be an instructor at Drexel University College of Medicine in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. This prestigious recognition may make LoVetri the only singing teacher in the world on a college medical faculty. She is on faculty at Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in New York City, is a guest lecturer at Teachers College Columbia University, and formerly taught for 10 years at Tisch School for the Arts and the Steinhardt School, both at New York University. Her students have leading roles on Broadway, perform at Carnegie Hall and at Lincoln Center, and have appeared at well-known venues in New York including The Jazz Standard and the Blue Note. She has authored many voice science research publications and pedagogy articles, including a chapter in the recent book, The Singer s Voice, by Drs. T. Murry and M. Benniger. She is on the Scientific Advisory Board of The Voice Foundation and is also a consultant to several noted New York City hospitals, retraining injured voices. She has been the singing specialist with the Grammy -award winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus since its inception in 1991 and has been teaching singing since Dr. Kathryn Green, has been director of the CCM Vocal Pedagogy institute for the past four years. Under her guidance, the Institute has expanded its offerings, graduated more than 150 Level III participants, and seen the initiation of two satellite courses at the University of Massachusetts, and in Michigan at Albion College. Kathryn has been instrumental in developing the Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Pedagogy program at Shenandoah University. This past summer she presented research at the Pan European Voice Conference (PEVOC) in Dresden, Germany. She received her DMA in performance at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and received a substantial scholarship from the state of New York to research the Hymnody of the Seneca Native Americans, which became her doctoral thesis. She has been a guest clinician at Universitat der Kunst Berlin and at Hochshule der Kunst Lubeck in Germany. Dr. Green is perhaps most well known for her portrayal of one of the leading characters in the musical Nine, which she performed in Berlin at Theatre des Westens, and her operatic comedic act of the Misplaced Diva which she performed both in Europe and the United States. As a classical contralto, she has appeared with the Erie and Buffalo Philharmonics, however when she sings crossover, her favorite styles are country and bluegrass. She has been teaching Somatic Voicework SM The LoVetri Method for eight years. This has been an amazing week of learning, fellowship, networking and fun with like-minded professionals. Barbara DeMaio Caprilli Director, American Singers Opera Project, Inc. Robert Doyle, Michigan District NATS Governor, serves on the Voice Faculty at Albion College and is the director of choral activities and theatre at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn, Michigan. He has formerly served as a music instructor for Olivet College, Siena Heights University, Lansing Community College, and Saginaw Valley State University He holds degrees in Vocal Performance from Michigan State University and The University of Texas at Austin. He presented Somatic Voicework SM The LoVetri Method at the 2008 Michigan Music Conference, and assisted Miss LoVetri in a Level I Certification Course for Somatic Voicework SM The LoVetri Method held at Albion College in April Marcelle Gauvin s two recordings, Faces of Love & The Edge of the Pond established her career as a national jazz recording artist. A well-respected instructor of both jazz & contemporary commercial vocal techniques, she is a faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a master class clinician. She assisted Miss LoVetri in a Level I Certification Course for Somatic Voicework SM The LoVetri Method held at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 2008 and Ms. Gauvin is one of the founding members of the Somatic Voicework SM The LoVetri Method in Boston. Tom Arduini has studied at SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Oswego, The Hartt School of Music, and Shenandoah University. He holds a B.A., M.S. and a degree in education administration. He has performed with Oswego Opera and also performed ten seasons at Glimmerglass Opera. He currently teaches vocal music in the Yorktown, N.Y. Central School District where he also serves as the Music Department Coordinator. He teaches Somatic Voicework SM The LoVetri Method in his private voice studio in Westchester County, New York. Ed Reisert, executive board member of the New York American Choral Directors Association, earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Boston Conservatory and his masters degree from State University of New York at Oswego. As a performer, Mr. Reisert sang with Glimmerglass Opera for five years and received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2006 to attend the Mozart s Worlds Institute in Vienna, Austria. 6 Special Guests Level III Dr. Gwen Korovin, otolaryngologist, maintains a busy private practice in New York City, where she treats some of the world s most well-known performers. She is clinical assistant professor of otolaryngology at New York University School of Medicine; adjunct faculty in the master of fine arts program at the New School of Social Research; and a consultant at the Ames Vocal Dynamics Laboratory of Lenox Hill Hospital, all in New York City. She serves on the board of directors and scientific advisory board of the Voice Foundation and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Voice in Philadelphia. Dr. Korovin has appeared on television as an expert on vocal health and is an author of numerous articles and research papers on the voice and voice medicine. She is in frequent demand as a speaker and presenter at conferences and symposia worldwide. She has served as chair of the New York County Medical Society s Committee of Continuing Medical Education and Credentialing and was chair of the Women s Medical Association of New York Speaker s Bureau. Most recently she co-edited the definitive reference textbook Diagnosis and Treatment of Voice Disorders, which serves professionals in the fields of voice science and singing. Level III Robert Marks, vocal coach, conductor, arranger, pianist, lecturer and vocal educator, holds a degree in speech pathology and has taught at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, in the professional development program for the New York Singing Teachers Association and at Belmont University in Nashville as a special guest artist for their summer program. For more than 30 years, he has maintained a busy private studio in New York City working with many children and young adults from Broadway, including many of the leads in the shows currently running, as well as with performers from cabaret and pop music. He is in demand as an arranger and conductor, as a music director of cabaret performances, and as an expert in helping performers present themselves to their best advantage in auditions and on stages throughout the U.S. Marks is regarded by many as the best of the best. He is known for having an encyclopedic knowledge of theatrical song from all eras and is legendary in his ability to draw out each performer s unique star quality. Post-Certification Dr. Wendy LeBorgne, voice pathologist and singing voice specialist, is director of the Blaine Block Institute for Voice Analysis and Rehabilitation; the Professional Voice Center of Greater Cincinnati; and is faculty at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in their musical theater division. Dr. LeBorgne holds a bachelor of fine arts in musical theatre from Shenandoah University and master s and doctoral degrees from the University of Cincinnati in communication sciences and disorders with a specialty in voice disorders. Her research has focused primarily on the area of the Broadway belt voice with multiple publications. She is a contributing author to the book Voice Therapy: Clinical Studies Providing a Case Study on Vocal Intervention with the Touring Broadway Actor as well as providing an interview chapter in Singing in Musical Theater. As a voice pathologist and singing voice specialist, LeBorgne provides evaluations and therapy for singers and actors in the Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Broadway Series, Dayton Opera, Dayton Broadway Series, Wright State University and Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Dr. LeBorgne actively presents nationally and internationally on the professional voice. Post-Certification Dr. Ronald High, a native Texan, received a B. M., cum laude, from the University of North Texas; a M. M. from Arizona State University; and a D. M. A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign. He has done additional study at the Music Academy of the West, the Blossom Music Festival, the American and Sherwood conservatories, and other institutions. He has studied with master teachers and coaches including William Warfield, Madame Sonia Sharnova, Karl Trump, Norman Gulbrandsen, Martial Singher, Madame Gwendolyn Koldofsky, John Wustman, and other artists. He has studied voice pedagogy with Stephen Farish, Wilma Osheim, and Karl Trump. He has incorporated Somatic Voicework SM The LoVetri Method - in his teaching since 2003 when he first attended the CCM Institute at the Shenandoah Conservatory. High has been the recipient of several postdoctoral and faculty development grants. In 2005, he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany. He has presented lecture/workshops at the British Voice Association Conference in London (2008) and at the 38th Annual Voice Symposium in Philadelphia (2009). As a collaborative pianist, High has performed with William Warfield, Faye Robinson, Gregory Hopkins, Leona Mitchell, Robert Sims, Jo Ann Pickens, Thomas Carey, and the Barrett Sisters Gospel Trio of Chicago. High is an Associate Professor of Music at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. He is in demand as a traditional gospel pianist, organist, and lecturer in African American church music. Leanne Koch Private Voice Instructor Vancouver, British Columbia About the Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy The master of music in vocal pedagogy curriculum at Shenandoah Conservatory trains students to teach in classical and contemporary vocal styles. Three levels of CCM are included, along with courses in applied teaching repertoire, applied teaching techniques and supervised private teaching. A cornerstone course in this curriculum, anatomy and function of the singing voice, was pioneered by Dr. Janette Ogg as an interdisciplinary course involving colleagues from physical therapy, respiratory therapy, anatomy and physiology, vocal acoustics and otolaryngology. The Voice Foundation and National Association of Teachers of Singing recognized Dr. Ogg for developing this pioneering interdisciplinary course by presenting her with the coveted Van Lawrence award. About the Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Pedagogy The doctor of musical arts in pedagogy with a vocal concentration prepares students for professional careers in higher education as researchers and teachers. Students gain advanced knowledge through an interdisciplinary approach in areas of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, technology, psychology and applied voice. Classical and CCM vocal techniques are incorporated in the curriculum. The curriculum is set up to accommodate those who are teaching by offering courses during the summer, online and with intensive weekend sessions during the fall and spring semester. Credit Information-grading options Certification is available upon successful completion of each level of contemporary commercial music vocal pedagogy instruction.
