3 WELCOME Welcome to the 2017 Wisconsin State Music Conference! Our conference theme, Well-Rounded With Music, is appropriate, considering the relatively new (since 2015) ESSA language, which lists music as one of the academic subjects needed to provide a well-rounded education. This is not news to our Wisconsin music educators, because we know this to be true, but we are excited to relay this important message to the rest of country. We are also excited to be providing a well-rounded conference schedule with over 100 sessions, a concert by the Navy Band Great Lakes Wind Ensemble, an Exemplary Soloist Recital, WSMA State Honors concerts, and performances by groups who auditioned for the honor of a state music conference concert. Returning for the third year will be the President s Welcome and Award Ceremony, from 8:00-8:30 am on Thursday. There are no sessions offered at this time, so that you can attend to help honor the WMEA award recipients. In addition, this year we will have a keynote address from Chris Gleason, Wisconsin Teacher of the Year and one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year. Please join us in the Monona Terrace Lecture Hall for this event. Also, one lucky attendee will win a free registration for the 2018 state music conference. During the day on Friday, you might see high school students and their parents in a session or visiting the exhibit hall. They are participating in our Aspiring Music Majors program which is offered for high school students who are interested in careers in music. This will be the fifth year of this event, and this year it is sponsored by Conn-Selmer and Wisconsin music stores. Please enjoy your time here at the conference, as you are educated, enlightened and entertained. We are thankful that you are part of Well-Rounded With Music for the conference and year-round!
