2 SOLO & GROUP WORKSHOPS From Shower to Stage learn the basics Instructor Matt King Week 1 MWF 5:30-7:20 pm Week 2 MW 5:30-7:20 pm Place Kayhi Band Room Do you love singing in the shower and think you might be ready to take that performance to the next level? This is the perfect class for those with little or no stage experience! In a fun and supportive atmosphere, each participant will have help choosing and learning a song, working with the microphone, developing stage presence, and interpreting lyrics for any style of music. Performance is encouraged but not required. Students may choose music from of any style: pop, jazz, folk, rock, Broadway, etc. Great American Songbook sing it like you mean it Instructor Anne Phillips w/ Matt Perri Week 1 MWF 5:30-7:20 pm Week 2 MW 5:30-7:20 pm Choose from hundreds of songs amid the riches of the Great American Songbook.Think Irving Berlin, Mercer, Porter, Arlen. These are the American standards: classically structured songs, easy to learn and hard to forget, lending themselves to myriad arrangements and interpretations. Performance experience recommended. Anything Goes sing what you love Instructor Matt King Week 1 MWF 7:30-9:20 pm Week 2 MW 7:30-9:20 pm Place Kayhi Band Room Any style goes for this class: from popular music and Top 40, to traditional standards, Broadway hits, and classic rock anthems! Pick your favorite song or that song that won t get out of your head and maybe give it a new feel, a new beat, or a new style. You ll spend time getting comfortable with a microphone, working on how to interpret the lyrics of your song, and learning how to make it your own. This is the class for the more advanced singer. If you have any experience singing for an audience, this is the class for you. Just Jazz the singer as jazz musician Instructor Anne Phillips w/matt Perri Week 1 MWF 7:30-9:20 pm Week 2 MW 7:30-9:20 pm This is the realm of singing with no ceiling. A jazz singer can vocalize a tune by changing melody, phrasing, words, and using vocal sounds such as those in scat singing. The repertoire comes from standards, Latin jazz, bebop and/or progressive jazz styles. This class is recommended for advanced singers or intermediate singers ready to challenge themselves in a new way.. First City Players can help you choose the song that s right for you, and we ll help you find the sheet music, too. If you need help learning your songs or parts before our guest artists arrive and the fun begins, give us a call.
3 Duets, Ensembles, Broadway & More Safety In Numbers sing it with a friend Instructors Week 1 Week 2 Place Fee Anne Phillips & Matt King TTh 5:30-7:20pm Sat 1:00-2:50 pm Tu 5:30-7:20pm Kayhi Choir Room $150 per group Some people find it easier and less stressful to sing in a group, some people like to harmonize and find that gorgeous blend of sounds, and some people like to share the stage so they have someone to play off of whatever your reason for wanting to sing in an ensemble, this class is for you! Duets, trios, quartets, quintets and beyond; put your group together and give us a call if you re short and need some help recruiting. We can help you select music if you need it; we ve got lots of vocal arrangements and sheet music at the office. Each vocal group will sing with Matt King or Anne Phillips to work on style. Limited to 8 groups Participants under the age of 16 will only sing at the Gala Performances with instructor and parental permission. All youth participants will perform at the Sunday Matinee. Waiting Lists If your favorite class is sold out, please contact First City Players to get your name on a waiting list. Call and we will do all we can to place you in a class. Music Theater singing AND acting? oh boy Instructor Matt Perri Week 1 TTh 7:30-9:20pm Sat 10:30am-12:30pm Week 2 Tu 7:30-9:20pm In this workshop, participants will select one song of their choice from the musical theater repertoire. Students will work on integrating all of the fundamental skills required to deliver a compelling performance of a theater song such as acting, vocal technique, music, story teling, physical life, and stage presence. Instruction will be tailored to address each student s strengths and areas of growth in a fun, supportive but challenging environment. Come ready to laugh, sing, and let go of compulsive habits that are holding back your best performance. All vocal classes require a commitment to attend a final rehearsal: Thursday, Jan. 18 th at Ted Ferry Civic Center beginning at 6:00 pm. Please note that participants in the Great American Songbook and Just Jazz are asked to choose songs from the jazz repertoire. We have a list of appropriate songs available, or the FCP artistic director is available to give you assistance. Because of limited class time, all participants are strongly urged to make song selections prior to their first session Private Lessons All of the Jazz & Cabaret guest artists are available for private lessons.. 5 About the Vocal Faculty: ANNE PHILLIPS ANNE PHILLIPS singer, composer, arranger, conductor, producer began her career as a member of the Ray Charles Singers on the Perry Como Show. Since that time her career has covered almost every area of the music business. In addition to recording an album of her own, Born To Be Blue, she worked as a singer and choral arranger/ conductor with many of the music world s leading artists from Carol King and Mahalia Jackson to Sammy Davis Jr., George Jones and Neil Diamond. She is widely known in the industry as the writer/arranger/producer of many national commercials such as What Has Sheraton Done For You Lately? the famous telephone number and Taste That Beats The Others Cold for Pepsi Cola which she arranged and produced for such rock stars as the Four Tops,and Martha and the Vandellas. Ms. Phillips first album, Born To Be Blue, recorded in 1959, has now been re-released on CD to rave reviews In 2001 she released a second solo CD Gonna Lay My Heart on the Line on which she performs songs she has written both music and lyrics. Some of the best songs I ve heard in years. Margaret Whiting. Her most recent CD, NOEL NOEL, Christmas carols written for a 25 voice a cappella choir was released last season and a new vocal CD, Ballet Time on which she sings with such jazz greats as Dave Brubeck, Dr. Billy Taylor and Marian McPartland was released three years ago. Ms. Phillips was recently awarded the Heart of Gold award from the Best Friends Foundation in Washington DC for her work with her Children s Jazz Choirs. For many years she was a National Trustee of NARAS and the New York representative for the Grammy show. Last fall she was a juror for the Coming Up Taller Awards presented by the President s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. She is listed in Who s Who in Entertainment. MATT KING Matt King began his piano studies when he was 5, and was playing professionally by age 14. He attended the University of Illinois as a classical music major before relocating to the New York area, where he earned his degree in Jazz Studies & Performance from William Paterson University in NJ. A former Composition Fellowship recipient from the NJ State Council on the Arts, he has garnered numerous awards for his playing, composing, and arranging. Matt was a Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition semi-finalist, and won the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in He has performed with major jazz figures including Chris Potter, Rufus Reid, Billy Hart, Benny Golson, Joe Morello, Charles MacPherson, Vic Juris, & Dave Stryker; Brazilian artists Claudio Roditi, Nilson Matta and Leny Andrade; iconic groups such as Blood, Sweat & Tears and The Shirelles; vocalists as diverse as Phoebe Snow, Carmen Souza, and Curtis Stigers; blues great Earl King, bluegrass master Tony Trischka, and many others across a broad stylistic spectrum. Matt is also currently keyboardist and musical director for the distinguished jazz guitarist Chuck Loeb. He has performed with four symphony orchestras in the US, appeared on The Today Show and Good Morning America, played Holland s renowned North Sea Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Cape Town Jazz Festival, and countless other venues throughout the US and over 20 countries abroad. King has appeared at Lincoln Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), the Beacon Theater, the Rainbow Room, the Waldorf- Astoria, the United Nations, Rockefeller Center, the Empire State Building, and regional jazz meccas including The Blue Note, Birdland, Smoke, Shanghai Jazz, and Trumpets. Currently free-lancing as a pianist, Hammond organist, and vocalist in a variety of musical genres, King also teaches piano and music theory privately. He has recently released his second album, Kaleidoscope, which features 10 of his original compositions, and per- MATT PERRI Matt Perri was most recently the conductor for the new Broadway musical Bandstand. Other Broadway credits include Finding Neverland, Rodgers and Hammerstein s Cinderella, Scandalous, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (2011), Promises, Promises (2010), White Christmas, and The Drowsy Chaperone. Matt was the music director for hit Off-Broadway musical Cagney. He also co-produced the Original New York Cast Recording of Cagney. Television credits include: The Sound of Music Live and Peter Pan Live both on NBC, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with David Letterman, The View, and Live with Kelly. Matt has been a regular songwriter for The View. In concert, he has served as music director and performed with Bette Midler, Kristen Chenoweth, and Mario Cantone. He has served as a national panelist in Jazz Voice for the National Young Arts Foundation. He is a graduate of New York University with a Bachelor of Music in jazz piano and composition. He lives in Verona, NJ with his wife Molly, son Elliot, and daughter Nola.
