4 4 welcome There are many works that one may find exciting, touching or beautiful but I cannot think of a piece of music that is as profoundly emotionally affecting as Gustav Mahler s Symphony No.9. Mahler s Ninth is often viewed as a heart-rending farewell to life. And while this is true, in this symphony Mahler does not only reflect sorrowfully on what he is leaving behind, but also expresses his extraordinary love for life, for nature and all that he holds dear. The symphony has the traditional four movements, but it is unusual in that the first and last are the slower movements that frame the middle two. The last movement is an extraordinary leavetaking as Mahler farewells life, tonality (the very fabric of music) and the rapidly changing society around him. His Ninth symphony does not end in a blazing finale, instead the music slowly fades away until only a few instruments are left playing almost empty notes. Gustav Mahler Each time I listen to this work I find myself completely enthralled as the music almost seems to disintegrate finally letting go but doing so in such a profound and loving way. 7 7 waso News Early Career Residency with waso Young Western Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth recently completed an Early Career Residency with WASO, supported by the Australia Council. The result of the residency was the composition and recording of three brand new works for symphony orchestra, including a Clarinet Concerto composed for young Western Australian clarinettist Ashley Smith. The Concerto will also get a World Premiere by WASO and Smith on 1 October this year in the Latitude New Music Festival. Skipworth s recorded works were conducted by WASO s Assistant Conductor Christopher Dragon and may appear on the airwaves soon, on ABC Classic FM. Skipworth was a participant in WASO s Composition Project in 2012 and has composed works for orchestras and ensembles around Australia. waso s 2014 Composition Project Tuesday 10 June marked the culmination of the 2014 Composition Project, part of WASO s Young and Emerging Artists Program. The Composition Project is a creative development program for some of WA s finest young composers in which they engage in workshops, rehearsals and private lessons to each develop a new piece of music for a WASO chamber orchestra of 14 musicians. Each year the program ends with a live performance and professional recording by the ABC of the composers new works, with the view to later broadcast the concert on ABC Classic FM. Under the guidance of project mentor and artistic director James Ledger, the young composers refine their skills of composition, orchestration and score writing during this three-month program, and also gain new insight into the demands and challenges that composers face in a professional environment. The composers also have the benefit of one-on-one mentoring with members of the ensemble. This year s participants James Bradbury (UWA), Griffin Wright (UWA), Alex Turley (WAAPA), Josiah Padmanabham (UWA) and Mark Holdsworth (UWA) represent a strong and vibrant community of young composers in Perth. The Composition Project has already served as a professional springboard for young WA composers in recent years, and we look forward to continuing this tradition into the future.

8 8 Biographies Asher Fisch Conductor Asher Fisch s first season with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra includes a range of classical repertoire, as well as a West Australian first; Beethoven s nine symphonies performed over two weekends in August. A seasoned conductor in both the operatic and symphonic worlds, he is known best for his interpretative command of German and Italian repertoire of the Romantic and post-romantic era, in particular Wagner, Brahms, Strauss and Verdi. He is currently Guest Conductor of the Seattle Opera, where he conducted its quadrennial Wagner Ring cycle in 2013, and his former posts include Music Director of the New Israeli Opera ( ) and the Vienna Volksoper ( ). He first worked with WASO in He has long maintained strong ties to the Bavarian State Opera, and in the season conducts a new production by Martin Kušej of The Force of Destiny, plus revival performances of Parsifal, Salome, Ariadne auf Naxos, La bohème and Turandot. Other highlights of the season include concerts with the Munich Philharmonic; Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra; National Orchestra of Belgium; Aarhus Symphony Orchestra (Denmark); a tour in Italy with the Orchestra della Toscana; and a visit to the Melbourne Festival in October 2013, where he conducted an all-wagner program with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He conducted the State Opera of South Australia s Wagner Ring cycle in 2005, which won ten Helpmann Awards. Asher Fisch began his conducting career as Daniel Barenboim s assistant and kapellmeister at the Berlin State Opera. 11 11 Meet the Musician katherine drake Tutti Viola Can you remember your first waso concert? I joined WASO in August 1988 and one of the works on my first concert was Le Bourgeois gentilhomme by Richard Strauss. As I was on trial I was sitting next to the. This clever work had only two or three viola players, each with some quiet solo parts. I remember feeling both nervous and excited at jumping in a bit at the deep end. Performing it was exhilarating, and as far as I recall we haven t performed it since. do you have a most memorable conductor s moment? I love the way Simone Young can often capture the essence of a work in a few well chosen words. One of my favorites was before we rehearsed the slowest movement of Turangalîla Symphonie by Olivier Messiaen. She merely said, prepare for 10 minutes of zen, and those excruciatingly long, slow, very quiet bows became mesmerizing, so much easier to control and beautiful. who are your favorite composers? Bach, Mozart and Brahms. I am also fascinated by the emotional and intellectual intensity in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century; not just the music but the visual arts and psychiatry as well. So Mahler, and Schoenberg, Berg and Webern all are extremely satisfying when I m in that sort of mood. Has your opinion of good music changed over your lifetime? Strangely, the music which I played when young that had a big emotional impact, still has the ability, when I play it now, to evoke those youthful excesses (hopefully tempered a little by some gained wisdom). Until I played the late German romantics I found them excessively complex but I m now in awe of and love Strauss and Wagner s ability to manipulate harmony so brilliantly and to create such extraordinary orchestral colours. I ve always had an ear out for the music of now and enjoy the raw energy of listening to minimalist music played really well. I m not good at playing it though (I tried to play Steve Reich s Violin Phase back in the seventies and just couldn t play out of phase and still can t!). where was your last holiday destination? I ve just returned from three wonderful weeks in New York. The visit was primarily to see my lovely daughter, who lives there, but I was also lucky enough to attend a brilliant performance at Carnegie Hall of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the wonderful Mariss Jansons playing Brahms Second Symphony, and Gil Shahan giving the most searingly beautiful performance of the Berg Violin Concerto. What a great-sounding hall, too. The trip also included lots of visits to art galleries (both huge and tiny) and eating food from all corners of the globe.

14 14 Program Notes Gustav Mahler ( ) Symphony No.9 in D Andante comodo Im Tempo eines gemächlichen Ländlers. Etwas täppisch und sehr derb Rondo-burleske. Allegro assai. Sehr trotzig Adagio. Sehr langsam und noch zurückhaltend At 8.30 on a crisp December morning in 1907, about 200 of Vienna s arts community gathered on the platform of the Westbahnhof, among them Schoenberg, Webern and Zemlinsky, the conductor Bruno Walter who gave the first performance of Mahler s Ninth Symphony after the composer s death and painter Gustav Klimt. As the train bearing Gustav and Alma Mahler pulled away, Klimt whispered, It s all over. After a decade, Mahler had resigned from the Vienna Court Opera in March 1907 and agreed to a four-month trial with New York s Metropolitan Opera. He had, however, been diagnosed at the beginning of the year with a heart condition that had worsened over the intervening months. In addition to this, the Mahlers four-year-old daughter had died in June, and, as her coffin was being lifted into the cortège, Alma s mother suffered a heart attack. Mahler s first New York season was a great success, but he returned to Europe in the summer to complete Das Lied von der Erde (begun during that fateful time a year before) and begin sketching the Ninth. Death, an indispensible part of 19thcentury Romanticism s furniture, informs Mahler s use of funeral marches in some early symphonies, and his return to the theme in vocal settings such as the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children). Now, however, death was an imminent possibility for Mahler himself. He refused to acknowledge Das Lied von der Erde as a numbered symphony, knowing better than to tempt fate by announcing that he was writing a ninth symphony. But it wasn t to be Mahler s last word nor indeed was the Ninth Symphony. The Symphony picks up where Das Lied von der Erde closes, the three-note ewig ( eternal ) from the latter crucial to the Ninth s first theme. Das Lied ends with the dear earth blossoming, and the blue distances shining eternally; the Ninth begins with what Deryck Cooke described as a warm singing melody redolent of summer, full of tender longing.

15 15 Philosopher Theodor Adorno argued that Mahler s music reflects the world s brokenness, so his use of folk music, moments of high romantic Angst, bird calls, military marches are all ultimately ironic reminders of the fragmentation of society and the self, and the blind aimlessness of history. Here, the destiny of the themes in the outer movements, for instance, is to become reduced to their constituent elements. This might be a metaphor for the force of entropy by which we age and die; it might be an image for the purification of the soul through suffering. Ambiguity is fundamental to Mahler: the second movement of this work explores his muchloved dance forms of waltz and Ländler, but not without sardonic passages. Mahler consulted Freud towards the end of his life, famously recounting a childhood experience where, rushing out of the house to avoid a painful scene of domestic violence between his parents, he was confronted by an organ-grinder playing the banal pop song Ach du lieber Augustin (O my dear Augustin). Irony in Mahler is always associated with states of extreme, often tragic emotion. The burlesque third movement deliberately undermines the principles of counterpoint that had an almost theological value to composers after J.S. Bach, who used it to create a seamless flow of activity. Mahler, however, allows the music to, as Adorno puts it, gape open, revealing the nothingness which so much of art is dedicated to staving off. The final movement is the Symphony s centre of gravity. Its theme is reduced to its absolute essence, but with a kind of Buddhist calm, as it examines and gently discards emotional layers. The three note ewig, motive embraces the theme of Beethoven s Sonata Op.81a, Les adieux, but it also recalls the hymn, Abide with me, fast falls the eventide. The movement purges itself of all fear and grief, and, in its final moments, remembers a line from one of the Kindertotenlieder, setting the words, Up on the heights, it s a beautiful day. Some of those people who met at the Westbahnhof in 1907 again gathered in silence to farewell Mahler in 1911, this time at the Grinzing cemetery. There was no music, and few words. The sun obligingly broke through clouds as the coffin was lowered. Up there on the heights, it was a beautiful day. 17 Meet the InstruMent the Bassoon 17 A member of the double reed family of woodwind instruments, the bassoon is built in four joints, and exists in two versions: the German or Heckel system, and the French or Buffet system, with differences in the construction of the bore and keys. When played, the bassoon is held diagonally across the body, and must be supported by a neck strap or harness due to its considerable weight. The early history of the bassoon is obscure, but the dulcian is generally considered to be its precursor, and was used in Renaissance and Baroque music until its eventual abandonment by the beginning of the 18th century. The 19thcentury German performer, teacher and composer Carl Almenraeder improved the design of the bassoon to enhance its intonation and response as well as expand its range to four octaves. The bassoon is an agile instrument, and those who play it employ a variety of techniques to highlight its capabilities. It is capable of a dry staccato that is used as a form of musical humour, while its upper register produces a reedy, plaintive sound. New techniques that developed in the 20th century include pitch-bending (adjusting the embouchure to slide up or down to a nearby note) and flutter tonguing (rapidly rolling the tip of the tongue to produce a growling effect). Early works for the bassoon include 39 concertos written by Vivaldi, outnumbering those he wrote for any other instrument except the violin. Other pieces that feature the bassoon include Tchaikovsky s Symphony No.4, Prokofiev s Peter and the Wolf, Dukas The Sorcerer s Apprentice, and the opening passage of Stravinsky s The Rite of Spring, which exploits the eerie quality of its upper register.
