3 Welcome What could have been is often a question on musicians lips. Had Mozart, Schubert or Mahler lived just five years longer, how would their music have sounded given the changing musical and philosophical landscape? When Elgar died in 1934, he left us tantalizingly close to revealing a new masterpiece which pointed in new directions, exploring new sonorities and structures. That he died so early in the composition of the piece threw a spanner in the works. The herculean undertaking of Anthony Payne to piece together all remaining sketches into an organic and compelling whole is a wonder to behold. Not only did it require thorough analysis of all extant sketches, but also a virtuosic understanding of how such sketches had manifested themselves orchestrally in previous works by Elgar. What we have as a result is a symphony which is a penetrating insight into the workings of a composer s mind; in this instance, two composers minds. The amazing thing here is that whether it be by Elgar or by Payne, we as the musician or listener are faced a great piece of music, the provenance of which becomes almost irrelevant the moment the swashbuckling opening grabs our attention. Introducing the program are two gems from the Classical world; Haydn s Philosopher Symphony, a work which starts out with measured, classical logic coloured by the dark sonority of two Cor Anglais, before bursting with life, and the Oboe Concerto by Mozart. I ve had the privilege of performing with Diana Doherty on a number of occasions now throughout Australia. She is music from the ground up, a truly inspiring colleague. 11 11 Meet the Musician Louise McKay Associate Cello What is the best thing about being a musician in WASO? My colleagues are seriously good musicians. Coming to work and listening to them play every day is pretty awesome. So is listening to and watching the world-class soloists we have visit. Is it important for an orchestral musician to be physically fit? It s important for everyone to be physically fit! Maintaining good core strength certainly helps musicians hold an upright but relaxed posture for extended periods. Some of our longer programs can be a real test of physical and mental endurance. How do you prepare for a concert? The orchestra rehearses together for 2-3 days before each major concert. I usually spend the weekend beforehand practicing my part for the coming week, along with scales and technical work. I also spend time during the week working on other recital pieces, chamber music and concerti to keep my chops in good shape. Right before a concert I try to make sure I ve had a good meal, do some light stretches to get the blood flowing, and some controlled breathing to focus my mind. When I m not playing the cello I can usually be found either running with my dog, volunteering for St John Ambulance first aid, or riding a bike. I really enjoy long distance road cycling, but am also hoping to complete the 1000km Munda Biddi mountain bike trail sometime in the next 6 months. Chair partnered by Penrhos College

15 ABOUT THE MUSIC Joseph Haydn ( ) Symphony No.22 in E flat The Philosopher Adagio Presto Minuet and Trio Finale (Presto) Haydn authority H.C. Robbins Landon thought Haydn may have been referring to this work when he told his biographers that he once composed a symphony in which God pleads with an abandoned sinner to reform, but the sinner in his rashness pays no heed. The first movement does give the impression that we are in church rather than in the concert hall, and the symphony as a whole takes the form of the Italian sonata da chiesa (church sonata), beginning with a slow movement In this opening Adagio a chorale (hymn) theme, entrusted to French horns and cors anglais (English horns), is announced, in several keys, with interludes for strings featuring resolving dissonances as in a Corelli concerto. All this is underpinned by a constant walking bass line. The effect is of a chorale prelude, and the style is deliberately archaic, even for Perhaps with a little imagination the horns can be heard as representing the voice of God, the somewhat querulous-sounding Cor Anglais as the sinner. The title The Philosopher, given to this symphony in Haydn s day, is appropriate only if we think of a religious philosopher rather than a philosophe, an intellectual of the Enlightenment. The second movement is more typical of the early Haydn symphonies a fast, almost fierce piece with only one main theme. The Minuet frames a Trio in which the pairs of English and French horns are given opportunities to show off. This prepares the way for the hunting Finale, whose fanfares are shared by both kinds of horns. Abridged from an annotation by David Garrett 1997/2003 Haydn composed the Symphony No.22 in 1764 whilst serving as Vice-Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court in Hungary. The West Australian Symphony first performed the work on 13 September 1960 under John Farnsworth Hall. WASO last performed this work on 31 March 2001, conducted by András Ligeti. Glossary Adagio Slowly. Dissonance A combination of notes which sounds harsh or unpleasant. Minuet A dance in triple time, which became popular in France in the 17th and 18th centuries. The term is now used to refer to a dance-like piece or movement in moderately fast triple time.

16 ABOUT THE MUSIC Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( ) Oboe Concerto in C, K314 Allegro aperto Adagio non troppo Rondo (Allegretto) The music of this concerto is more often heard, these days, played on the oboe than on the flute, so it is easy to forget that for years this piece was known only as the Flute Concerto in D. Scholars were aware that Mozart, in spring or summer 1777, had composed a concerto for the oboist Ferlendi (or Ferlendis), who had recently joined the Salzburg Court Orchestra. The following year, in Mannheim, Mozart described how his new friend Friedrich Ramm, the leading virtuoso oboist of the day, had played his oboe concerto for Ferlendis five times. Obviously Mozart had been pleased with his oboe concerto, particularly as Ramm played it. But the work was thought to be lost. In 1920 the musicologist and conductor Bernhard Paumgartner discovered in the library of the Salzburg Mozarteum a set of orchestral parts for a concerto in C major for oboe by Mozart, which was obviously an oboe version of his D major flute concerto. The familiar flute version had been prepared in 1778 to fulfil the commission of a Dutch amateur, Ferdinand de Jean, for two flute concertos. Most probably Mozart had composed one (the Flute Concerto in G, K313) then, pressed for time, adapted the oboe concerto. In 1948 Paumgartner edited a published edition of the oboe concerto, and supported it with an article in the Mozart Yearbook (1950). Closer examination confirmed that the Flute Concerto in D is the oboe concerto in disguise: it does not use the full range of notes available on the flutes of Mozart s day, and the range of the violin part in the orchestra also points to the likelihood of transposition from a C major original. Those who, observing the idiomatic mastery of the oboe in the quartet Mozart composed for Ramm (K370), regret that Mozart did not provide Ramm with a concerto as well, are forgetting that Ramm was probably perfectly satisfied with the concerto originally composed for Ferlendis: this one! The C major concerto is now central to the oboe repertoire, and it is the flute version which is in danger of being neglected.

17 In either form the concerto is a deft and refined essay in the classical style, with a galant manner. There are many ingenious and witty touches, such as the mockserious cadence figure with repeated notes and a descending arpeggio which the soloist later extends. Donald Tovey finds opera buffa malice from the second violins, and tuttis crowded with contrapuntal and operatic life typical Mozartian concerto writing, in other words, but never drawing attention to its skill. The second movement, in F major, is mainly a lyrical cantilena for the soloist, framed by what Donald Tovey calls quasi-heroic gestures from the orchestra. A character in a slightly later opera by Mozart gives the feeling of the Rondo: Blonde, the English servant girl in The Abduction from the Seraglio, in whose aria Welche Wonne, welche Lust (Oh what pleasure, oh what joy!) Mozart returned to a variant of this rondo theme. In the second episode of the Rondo, first and second violins chase one another in a passage in three-part canonic counterpoint, worthy of the ingenuity of an improvising organist, and underpinned by a pedal note on the horns. That s how it looks on the page organ is the last thing the hearer would think of. Entertainment and the opportunity for virtuoso display is the keynote here. David Garrett 2002 The West Australian Symphony Orchestra first performed Mozart s Concerto K314, in its version for oboe, at a Popular Concert in Fremantle in 1952 with conductor Bernard Heinze and oboist Jiří Tancibudek. Glossary Cadence A progression of chords moving to a harmonic close, point of rest, or sense of resolution. Arpeggio A musical gesture in which the notes of a chord are spread, or played one after the other instead of simultaneously. It nearly always starts at the bottom of the chord. Cantilena A melody which is particularly song-like (rather than dramatic or virtuosic). Rondo A musical form where a main idea (refrain) alternates with a series of musical episodes. Classical composers often wrote the final movement of their symphonic works in rondo form. Counterpoint Two or more lines of music or melodies that are played at the same time.

18 ABOUT THE MUSIC Edward Elgar ( ) The Sketches for Symphony No.3 Elaborated by Anthony Payne Allegro molto maestoso Scherzo: Allegretto Adagio solenne Allegro It is almost too easy to regard Elgar s sombre and restrained Cello Concerto as his valediction, and it is true that after that piece was completed in 1919 there was little substantial orchestral music from Elgar s pen. As composer Anthony Payne tells the story, it was Elgar s friend George Bernard Shaw who caused Elgar to come out of retirement and consider writing a Third Symphony in Having orchestrated Chopin s Funeral March, Elgar was asked if he might not make a symphony out of the rest of Chopin s sonata, and replied he would rather write his own. Shaw, apparently, badgered the BBC into formally commissioning such a work which, from comments made by Elgar, already existed at least in his head. Sadly, Elgar was soon after diagnosed with cancer and swiftly became ill and died. Elgar did tend to work out most of his music in his mind, so sketches that he left tend to be fragmentary, sometimes an extended section, sometimes just a chord progression as Payne puts it. Moreover, Payne goes on, Ideas sometimes came to him outside the context of a tempo, for instance, and one, clearly marked scherzo, eventually ended up in the slow movement. In very few cases, though, was there any indication of the instrumentation. Elgar also recycled material, not because he was lazy or running short of time: it was, as for many composers, central to his practice. There are themes from his abandoned oratorio The Last Judgment and from incidental music to the historical drama Arthur by Laurence Binyon. Elgar would, having amassed the sketches, play around with their ordering sometimes in intensive jam sessions with the violinist W.H. Reed until they fell into shape. (Reed published some of the sketches in Elgar as I Knew Him, which is where Payne first found them and became fascinated with the possibility of realising the work). Shortly before his death, Elgar had forbidden anyone to complete the work, and his heirs, not unreasonably, upheld his wish at first. Payne, nevertheless, persisted with the work for its own sake, and had a breakthrough in the ordering of the sketches that allowed him convincingly to elaborate the first movement. The Elgar family, meanwhile, had come to realise that once the sketches were out of copyright, anyone could complete the work; given that it was safest in Payne s capable hands, it was resolved to formally commission him. The result is a work entirely consistent with Elgar s style, instrumentation and rhetoric, and a reminder that Elgar had not decided to remain silent.

19 At the time of his death, Elgar left over 130 pages of sketches; most of these are in short score, except for four short, fully orchestrated passages, including the first 17 bars of the opening section. These passages show that Elgar intended the work for an orchestra of triple woodwind, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, two harps, percussion and strings. With the first movement, of which Elgar had written down the exposition and recapitulation, Payne worked from the centre outwards, realising four pages of sketches as the development section. From this he was able to surmise the contrasting musical ideas that form the basis for it. The following scherzo, by contrast, had been fairly clearly laid out in Elgar s sketches, so realising it was a more straightforward task and, in fact, was the first part of the work that Payne tackled. As Payne notes, the scherzo has a lighter manner which went far beyond his established symphonic practice. The Adagio is where Payne did have to work long and hard at arranging pieces of the jigsaw, yielding a work that he rightly describes as of searing intensity tragic in its import. Payne s studies of the sketches for the finale suggested to him a world of chivalry and drama but no sense of the form of the movement (though his intuition was to produce a broad sonata-design movement) or how it might end. His solution was to play off a sometimes heraldic first subject group with contrasting episodes in compound metre (like the lilting opening of the Cello Concerto), and develop the material in a mighty and energetic drama. There is a ravishing G minor interlude which, to Payne, seems to have strayed from some rondo sub-stratum and yields a structural ambivalence before some hyper- Elgarian muscularity worthy of his First Symphony. To conclude, Payne felt that the work should point towards new musical horizons, rather than end with emphatic affirmation. This new visionary world, he writes, would span the years between the composer s death and my attempted realisation of his sketches. I trusted my intuition and went ahead and wrote. Gordon Kerry 2015 The first performance of Anthony Payne s elaboration of Elgar s sketches for his unfinished Third Symphony was given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Andrew Davis at the Royal Festival Hall on 15 February The West Australian Symphony performed the Australian premiere in April 1999 with conductor Vernon Handley. Glossary Scherzo Literally, a joke; the term generally refers to a movement in a fast, light triple time which may involve whimsical, startling or playful elements. Oratorio a substantial work for singers and orchestra based on a religious text. An unstaged drama or narrative of Biblical events composed for voices (alternating aria, narrator, recitative, full chorus, etc.) and accompanied by instruments. Exposition The first section of a fugue or a sonata form, in which the principal themes normally are introduced. Recapitulation A return to the opening material of a piece or a movement. Adagio Slowly.

MEET THE INSTRUMENT THE OBOE 21 The oboe is a double reed member of the woodwind family. Developed in the mid-17th century from early instrument the shawm, the Baroque oboe was embraced by composers such as Vivaldi, Telemann and Handel, inspiring them to create concertos for the new and improved instrument. Favourite orchestral oboe works include Prokofiev s Peter and the Wolf, Tchaikovsky s Swan Lake, and Mussorgsky s Pictures at an Exhibition: Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks. Symphony Services International The oboe as we know it today developed in 19th-century Europe, and the cities of Paris and Vienna in particular gained a reputation for their oboe-making tradition. The body of the present-day oboe is predominantly made out of African Blackwood and the keys usually of silver alloy. The oboe has a double reed constructed of two pieces of cane tied together. Sound is created as the air vibrates between the two reeds into the instrument s body. The size and shape of the reed in relation to the player s technique and style of playing have a dramatic effect on the quality of the eventual sound, so as a result oboists customise or make their own reeds. 1. Reed 2. Staple 3. Key 4. Bell The coned bore of the oboe, in comparison to the cylindrical bore of other woodwind instruments such as the flute, aids its audible dominance over other instruments. This is why it is used to tune the orchestra, as its penetrating timbre enables it to be heard clearly by other members of the orchestra. The range of the oboe:
