3 Welcome For much of my career so far, I ve had the privilege of getting stuck into Vivaldi s music. Some pieces are luminous and serene, others radiant and brilliant and there is always a mischievous edginess in his Italian style. What I ve discovered is that Vivaldi is often associated with razor sharps twists of curling finger work for the violins. There is a natural velocity, which results in bursts of energy flowing from his music to make us all feel balanced and happy. Playing his music (and I ve performed around half of his vast output) is very different from listening to it. I always feel an overwhelming energy from this creative man and his masterpiece, The Four Seasons is a great example. Tonight, one of Australia s finest violinists will bring his own creative vibrancy to this irrepressible piece of music, Shaun Lee-Chen. His virtuosity is breathtaking and brilliant and I m so happy to be directing this work with him as soloist. I wanted to capture the exuberance and excitement of my work with the WASO by performing one of the giants of classical music, the great Johann Sebastian Bach. The Grand style of this magnificent work shows off the sparkle of the WASO team on stage: strings, wind, brass and timpani. And tonight we bring you the first performance by WASO of Rameau s Les Indes Galantes an Opera ballet hit in Paris in the Eighteen century representing native people from exotic locations including native North American Indians who had been captured in French held Louisiana, and exhibited at a fair in Paris. The music is beautiful, theatrical, gracious and stylish. These three extraordinary composers represent the period I adore, the colour, precision and joy of the Baroque. I hope you enjoy the Concert! 7 7 WASO IN THE COMMUNITY Andrew Tait performs his viola de gamba EChO in Schools at Guildford Grammar Preparatory School Photo: Fiona Taylor Ward visits hit the right note at PMH Keep doing what you are doing Nurse, Outpatients, Princess Margaret Hospital for Children Now in our seventh year of the Hospital Orchestra Program (HOP), WASO musicians regularly visit Princess Margaret Hospital to entertain and educate the children, their families and carers in this healthcare setting. March 24 was the first of six visits planned for the year ahead. Joshua Davis ( Trombone) and Liam O Malley (Assoc Trombone) performed trombone duets whilst Andrew Tait (double bass), pictured, took along his viola de gamba. The morning was spent visiting all wards in the hospital, including performances in outpatients and day programs as well. Musicians, teachers, and children all enjoyed the extra time spent to be able to ask our musicians questions about being in WASO. The highlight for everyone was definitely the opportunity to sing along to familiar tunes a first for everyone to sing Incy Wincy Spider in Ionian mode accompanied by Andrew on his viola de gamba. EChO in Schools Building on the success of our well-known and much-loved Kids Cushion Concerts, EChO (the WASO Education Chamber Orchestra) continues to share the love of music with young people through our EChO in Schools program. Featuring one of each instrument of the orchestra, the 15-piece ensemble will perform interactive and engaging programs for students at a number of primary schools in Perth s metropolitan and surrounding areas throughout This year we are launching two great new shows EChO s Outback Adventures and S(w)ing along with EChO both of which are customisable to suit students from Kindergarten through to Year 6. Add in a fabulous presenter, plenty of audience participation during a 50-minute musical journey and finish up with a Q&A or even a have-a-go session on our student-size instruments after the show, and what better way is there to introduce students to our Orchestra.

13 Meet the Musician Sarah Blackman Violin What s your earliest memory of playing music? I remember my first violin lesson with a member of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra when I was 5 years old. I wouldn t really call it playing music as it takes a long time to learn to play but it was exciting none the less. I had grown up with music all around the house and prior to starting the violin I tried to play a clarinet duets with my parents minus the mouthpiece... (they wouldn t trust a 3 year old with a mouthpiece) so it was more like a didgeridoo. You performed with tonight s director Paul Dyer in last year s Chamber Series. How different is his approach to rehearsals? Very different. As there are much fewer people involved in chamber music it is often more like a collaboration. Paul takes this a step further and makes every individual feel involved in the rehearsal process and performances. He encourages discussion about musical interpretation from every person and there is no wrong answer, so it makes rehearsals very interesting. He is also very entertaining. What is your favourite style of music to play? In the orchestra my favourite is Romantic, and for chamber music I prefer the wellknown Classical and Romantic works. What are you most looking forward to in the rest of the 2015 season? Pinchas Zukerman playing the Brahms Violin Concerto and the Double Concerto during the Brahms Festival. Where was your last holiday destination? Last December and January I was lucky enough to travel to Europe and it was amazing. I went to Prague, Munich, Austria and Italy, there was so much snow and the novelty never wore off! It is just so beautiful there and every place has such an interesting history, not to mention the great food and beer. I can t wait to go back again. What inspires you? Great scenery, the outdoors, laid back people with a sense of humour, Hilary Hahn, and my cute little Cavoodle called Wilbur.

15 TIMELINE of composers & works ANTONIO VIVALDI Born in Venice, Italy Died in Vienna, Austria JEAN-PHILIPPE RAMEAU Born in Dijon, France Died in Paris, France JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Born in Eisenach, Germany Died in Leipzig, Germany J.S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No Vivaldi's Four Seasons 1725 Rameau's Les Indes galantes

16 ABOUT THE MUSIC Antonio Vivaldi ( ) The Four Seasons Concerto in E, RV 269, La primavera (Spring) Allegro Largo Allegro Concerto in G minor, RV 315, L estate (Summer) Allegro non molto Adagio Presto Presto Concerto in F, RV 293, L autunno (Autumn) Allegro Allegro assai Adagio molto Allegro Concerto in F minor, RV 297, L inverno (Winter) Allegro non molto Largo Allegro Antonio Vivaldi died in Vienna in July 1741 and was buried in an unmarked grave. His music was rarely if ever played between then and the 1930s, when musicians in Italy began rediscovering Vivaldi s huge and varied output of works. With the interest of music scholars like Alfred Einstein, composer Alfredo Casella and poet Ezra Pound, the revival of Vivaldi began; by the end of the 20th century Vivaldi was once again one of the most popular and frequently performed composers. Despite his death in obscure poverty, Vivaldi had enjoyed great popularity and success during his lifetime. Born in Venice in 1678, Vivaldi began learning violin with his father, a professional musician. He began studying for the priesthood in his early teens, though this in no way would have been seen as conflicting with the expectation of a career in music. It should be noted, too, that in Vivaldi s time one was not obliged to enter a seminary; he was effectively apprenticed to an older priest and was eventually ordained. Although ordained a priest, Vivaldi spent his adult life as a composer and violinist. His works included some 500 concertos as well as many operas, instrumental sonatas and a large body of sacred music. He pioneered the solo concerto, rather than the more common concerto grosso which had, at the very least, a pair of solo instruments. This was in part a vehicle for his own virtuosity; his playing was clearly prodigious one contemporary describes how Vivaldi put his fingers but a hair s breadth from the bow, so that there was scarcely room for the bow. He also experimented with violin technique, developing methods like position shifts, the use of mutes and pizzicato to create new sounds and effects, often with specifically illustrative intent.

17 Venice in Vivaldi s time was, as H.C. Robbins Landon puts it, a city past its prime, yet it maintained a rich and elaborate cultural life. A particular feature of the city was the establishment of a number of orphanages for girls that doubled as music academies. In 1703, the year he was ordained, Vivaldi began teaching at one such orphanage, the Ospedale della Pietà. In his capacity as director of music at the Pietà, Vivaldi composed the first known concertos for cello, bassoon, mandolin and flautino (sopranino recorder). On the available evidence, the students were very fine players indeed. The Four Seasons forms part of Il cimento dell armonia e dell inventione ( The Contest of Harmony and Invention ), Opus 8, which was published in 1725 in Amsterdam. The Four Seasons is a frankly programmatic work. French composers had a tradition of music imitating nature, but Vivaldi was one of the first Italian composers to experiment in this vein. Vivaldi s rhetoric exquisitely depicts the seasons progress, described also in sonnets (possibly written by him) which he affixed to the score. The bright opening of the first concerto reflects joy at the arrival of spring, and the soloist s entry sets off a chain reaction of trilling birdcalls over a static bass. Rippling passages suggest running water, and the menace of distant thunder can be heard before the birds sing again. In the slow movement, a goat-herd falls asleep among murmuring plants, not even disturbed by the repeated barking of his dog. In the finale Botticellian nymphs and shepherds perform a rustic dance with bagpipe drone. Summer s first movement embodies a sense of heat-struck lassitude with only the intrepid cuckoo and turtle-dove calling, as the shepherd fears the encroaching storm. This apprehension is carried over into the unquiet slow movement, before the storm arrives in all its fury in the finale. Autumn begins with peasants celebrating the harvest with dance and song, and, as the movement progresses, Vivaldi creates a striking musical image of drunkenness. In the slow movement, the peasants sleep off their binge, before going hunting in the finale. This contrasts cantering hunting music with the panic of the quarry, which is caught and killed. Snow, ice, chattering teeth and a cruel wind inform the first movement of Winter, but for the slow movement we go indoors and enjoy a crackling fire as the rain beats on the windows. The finale begins with ice-skating, weaving different voices in slow-moving elegant arcs. The ice cracks, the skater shivers, and the four winds are unleashed. Gordon Kerry 2005/2010 The Four Seasons first appeared in print in 1725 but we do not know when exactly they were composed or first performed. WASO last performed this work on 3 & 4 March 2006 in Kings Park with Nigel Kennedy. YOU MAY ALSO ENJOY MOZART Violin Concerto No.3 featured in Pictures at an Exhibition Fri 5 & Sat 6 June Glossary Pizzicato Plucking, rather than bowing, the strings. Opus A system of cataloguing the works of a composer. Opus is Latin for work Programmatic Music which is inspired by and purports to express a non-musical idea, such as a story or a particular scene. Usually such a work (and/or its various movements) has a descriptive title, e.g. Beethoven s Pastoral Symphony

18 ABOUT THE MUSIC Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Orchestral Suite No.4 in D, BWV 1069 Ouvertüre Bourrée I and II Gavotte Menuett I and II Réjouissance Bach s orchestral suites were thought to have dated from his time at Cöthen ( ), however recent studies suggest that they were actually written in Leipzig, or at least heavily revised there. The four suites appear to have been written at different times, and were not intended as a set. Performing parts indicate that they were presented by the Collegium Musicum, a voluntary association of professional musicians and university students which gave weekly public concerts in Leipzig. Bach called the suites Ouvertüren after the first movement which in each case is an Overture in the French style. The form was quite regular: a majestic first section featuring dotted rhythms followed by a fast fugal section. In the French suite, the ouvertüre would be followed by a series of dances. Bach gives his French dances a hint of Italian flavour, especially in his use of instruments. Thus in Suite No.4, he often treats the brass, woodwind and strings as independent bands, as in Menuett II, which is just for strings. The bourrée was rhythmically speaking the least complex of all French Baroque dances, often marked gay or joyful. Bach gives us a pair, the second running straight on after the first. The gavotte was characterised by regularity, proportion and calm balance. Here Bach gives us a stately but joyful dance, spiced with Italianate syncopations. His two Menuetts also feature syncopation, often decorating the cross-rhythms with trills. The suite closes with a Réjouissance (literally rejoicing ) in the style of a polonaise. Natalie Shea Symphony Australia 2004 The West Australian Symphony Orchestras only performance of this suite was on 11 and 12 April 1975 under conductor Peter Erős. YOU MAY ALSO ENJOY RESPIGHI Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No.2 featured in Carmina Burana Fri 19 & Sat 20 June Glossary Syncopations Accents where you don t expect them, especially as against the prevailing beat. Trills A very rapid alternation of two notes.

19 Jean-Philippe Rameau ( ) Les Indes galantes: Ouverture Entrée des quatre nations Menuets I and II Contredanse Ritournelle pour le turc généreux Tambourins I and II Prélude pour l adoration du soleil Air pour les sauvages Chaconne Dijon-born Rameau went to Paris to publish a book. His Treatise on Harmony was an important step in the evolution of the tonal harmony that underpins our repertoire. But Rameau s eminence as a Baroque composer owes more these days to the prodigious list of stage works he launched there with Hippolyte et Aricie, his first success at age 50. Many of Rameau s operas subscribe to the French Baroque genre, opéra-ballet. Minuets, contredanses and tambourins were essential ingredients, but you don t have to know that a tambourin was a lively two-beat Provençal dance accompanied by flute and cylindrical two-headed drum to appreciate the astonishing liveliness Rameau vested in stock dances. For Les Indes galantes Rameau eschewed the usual mythological setting. All four tableaux (entrées) tell of love in far-flung corners of the globe ( the Indies ): Peru, an Indian Ocean island, Persia and North America. After the slow-fast overture, we hear the processional entry of the four nations. Le Turc généreux is named for Osman who, though in love with Emilie, gallantly surrenders her to Valère, who freed him from slavery. The Prélude pour l adoration du soleil relates to a Sun Festival in the shadow of a Peruvian volcano. There was real-life inspiration for les sauvages : Rameau saw Louisiana Indians dancing at the Théâtre Italien in A suite of instrumental excerpts gives little indication of Rameau s stage spectacle (including volcanic eruption), but we can appreciate the range of musical gesture that even dancers at the time acknowledged as latent with suggested choreography. Gordon Kalton Williams 2015 The first performance of Les Indes galantes took place at the Paris Opéra on 23 August 1735, when two of the four entrées (Le turc généreux and Les Incas de Pérou) were premiered. The West Australian Symphony Orchestra last performed excerpts from the work in August 1980, with Thomas Mayer conducting. Glossary Tonal harmony The harmonic system which developed in the late 17th century and was the basis of all music of the Classical period. It is based on the concept of a tonic chord, to which the other chords of the scale are related, some very closely, so that they seem to lead directly back to the tonic, others more distantly. A piece of Classical music can be understood as a journey away from the tonic chord, creating a sense of tension, and then back to it, releasing that harmonic tension.

MEET THE INSTRUMENT THE VIOLA 21 The viola is the alto member of the violin family and possesses a warm, dark tone compared to the lighter, more brilliant soprano sound of the violin. It is pitched a perfect fifth lower than the violin and an octave higher than the cello. The Viola primarily uses the alto clef, but also treble clef. The viola came into being in northern Italy around the early 16th century, and since then has undergone many changes. Historically, it was an instrument of the middle, and was used to cover both the alto and tenor registers. Because of this violas historically and today, vary greatly in size. The viola has a similar range to the human voice and acoustically blends well with other instruments. Before 1740 the viola was seldom treated as a soloist, however this started to change during the lifetime of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, and greater equality in partwriting and increased technical demands can be observed in the chamber music written during this period. By the 20th century, the presence of such outstanding players as Lionel Tertis and William Primrose, and composer/players including Paul Hindemith and Brett Dean, broadened the viola repertoire, realising the instrument s potential of tone and technique.
