ABOUT THE COACHES JOHN CLOUSER is the head of CIM s Bassoon Department and is principal bassoon of The Cleveland Orchestra. He completed studies at Temple University, Trenton State College and Gordon College, and his teachers have included Bernard Garfield and Matthew Ruggiero. Clouser served as associate principal bassoon of Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal from He was also former principal bassoon of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra from and a member of the faculty woodwind quintet at Memphis State University from He has participated in the Peninsula, Colorado, Tanglewood, Flagstaff, Round Top and Grand Teton Festivals, and served as adjunct professor at McGill University, Rhodes College and Haverford College. He was appointed to the CIM faculty in MARY KAY FINK joined The Cleveland Orchestra as piccoloist in 1990 and has appeared as soloist with the orchestra on numerous occasions. She has also been a member of the New Jersey Symphony, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and Seito-Kinen Festival Orchestra. In addition, she has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Nashville Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra and Milwaukee Symphony. She was Associate Professor of Flute at the

7 University of Wisconsin-Madison ( ), flute instructor at Baldwin Wallace College ( ) and has been on the faculty of CIM since In 1986 she won first prize in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition and has been invited to many of the National Flute Conventions as a performer. She holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School. JODY GUINN has been the principal harpist of the Akron Symphony Orchestra and Cleveland Opera since She played for the Cleveland Ballet and Ohio Chamber Orchestra for 16 years while both organizations were in existence in Cleveland. She has been substituting or playing extra harp with The Cleveland Orchestra since 1986 including numerous tours to Europe, New York City s Carnegie Hall and Washington D.C. s Kennedy Center. With The Cleveland Orchestra, she has recorded numerous works, most notably two Wagner operas on the Decca label. For the past five seasons, she has joined The Cleveland Orchestra on its European tours, including its debut in Italy and its residency programs in Miami, Florida, Vienna, Austria, and Lucerne, Switzerland. In August, 2008, she appeared with the orchestra at the renowned Salzburg Festival in Austria. In recent seasons, Jody has also been playing with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, touring Japan and California and recording several orchestral works on the Telarc label. She has been privileged to work under the batons of several Maestros: composer/conductor John Adams, Christoph von Dohnányi, Paavo Järvi, Pierre Boulez and Franz Welser-Möst, current conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra. Other orchestras in which Jody has appeared include the Florida Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Baltimore Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestra. Other artists with which Jody has performed include the Three Tenors, Barry Manilow, Ray Charles, singer Josh Groban and American Idol s Clay Aiken. Jody is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music where she received her Master of Music degree in Harp Performance studying with world-renowned harpist Alice Chalifoux. She also attended numerous summer study programs at the former Salzedo School in Camden, Maine. In 2002, Jody was honored to have performed, along with six of her colleagues, at the Eighth World Harp Congress held in Geneva,

8 Switzerland. Currently, she is a member of the Salzedo Harp Duo along with colleague Nancy Lendrim, principal harpist of the Toledo Symphony. Together, they have presented many duo-harp concerts and master classes across the country since the release on the Azica label of their CD titled Short Stories in June In February 2006, the duo s recording of Debussy s Clair de Lune was featured on the CBS Daytime Drama, The Young and the Restless. The duo appeared at the American Harp Society National Conference in June 2008 in Detroit playing on a concert honoring the 100th Birthday of their mentor and teacher, Alice Chalifoux. In July 2008, they traveled to Amsterdam where they performed works by Salzedo on a concert at the Tenth World Harp Congress. Jody shares her love of the instrument with several private students and is on the faculty of Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in Berea, Case Western Reserve University, the Preparatory Division of the Cleveland Institute of Music, Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania and has taught at Malone College in Canton. Currently, she is playing second harp in The Cleveland Orchestra. JONATHAN SHERWIN, bassoonist and contrabassoonist, joined The Cleveland Orchestra in He was previously a member of the Colorado Symphony, where he also served as personnel manager. While living in Denver, he was active on local Denver television and radio, performing voice overs for the orchestra s publicity and advertising. In addition, Sherwin was the host for the Colorado Symphony s Talk Back series of post concert question and answer forums. A native of Buffalo, New York, he holds a bachelor s degree and Performer s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music and a master s degree from Northwestern University. His teachers have included K. David Van Hoesen, Willard Elliot, Burl Lane and Bradford Buckley. Sherwin has served as principal bassoon of the Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago Civic Orchestra and Chicago City Ballet Orchestra, and also has been a member of the New Orleans Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic and Chicago s Music of the Baroque. He has participated in the Aspen Music Festival, Grand Teton Music Festival, Spoleto Festival USA and the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Active as an educator, Sherwin teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Music and

9 at Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music and has given master classes at many colleges and music festivals including the Eastman School of Music, Duquesne University, Aspen Music Festival and Chautauqua Music Festival. When not practicing, teaching or making reeds, Sherwin can be found on the tennis court or watching classic movies. JOSHUA SMITH has been principal flute of The Cleveland Orchestra since He received an Artist Diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music. A student of Julius Baker, Jeffrey Khaner and Frank Bowen, he has been a frequent soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra, including collaborations with Christoph von Dohnányi, Esa Pekka Salonen, Mitsuko Uchida, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Riccardo Chailly, Myung Whun Chung and Leonard Slatkin. He is also chairman of the wind faculty at Kent/Blossom Music. As a coach and teacher, he has been asked to lead national and international master classes. He has served on the faculties of the Domaine Forget Summer Festival in Québec, National Orchestral Institute in Maryland and as a guest artist/coach for the New World Symphony in Florida. He regularly appears as a chamber musician and recitalist around the country and abroad, often with pianist Kathryn Brown as a duo partner. His other recent chamber collaborations include performances with soprano Lucy Shelton and pianist Pierre Laurent Aimard. He was appointed to the CIM faculty in RICHARD SOLIS was a member of The Cleveland Orchestra from He served as principal horn with the Orchestra from Solis attended CIM and studied horn with Myron Bloom from He is a former artist-in-residence at the University of Delaware and was principal horn of the Festival Casals. His recordings include chamber music from the Marlboro Festival, and he can be heard on more than 100 recordings with The Cleveland Orchestra as principal horn. He was appointed to the CIM faculty in 1977.

10 BARRICK STEES is the assistant principal bassoonist of The Cleveland Orchestra and instructor of bassoon at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Kent/Blossom Music. Stees received a bachelor s degree and performer s certificate from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with K. David Van Hoesen. He has concertized extensively in Europe, South America and Asia, including a solo tour of Hong Kong and China. He has appeared at international music festivals in Italy, Germany, Argentina, Colombia and the Dominican Republic. He has given recitals throughout the United States. Solo appearances include performances with the Hartford Symphony, South Bend Symphony, Brevard Music Center Orchestra and Cass City Bach Festival. Awarded the Presidential Scholar Teacher Recognition Award from the United States Secretary of Education, he has taught at Michigan State University, Interlochen Arts Camp, Interlochen Arts Academy, Brevard Music Center and University of Akron. His former students occupy prominent positions in orchestras and universities throughout the United States. Stees was previously principal bassoonist with the Hartford Symphony and has played with the Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Detroit Symphony Orchestras as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has recorded three solo CDs, The Romantic Bassoon, Opera Transcriptions and Paraphrases and Nostalgica. His website, and blog, BarryBlogs, contain a wealth of information for bassoonists. Celebrated for a tone like toasted caramel. Amazing. (Musical Toronto), ERIC WONG is the violist of the Cavani Quartet, ensemble -in-residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He was also a member of the JUNO-nominated Afiara Quartet and the Linden String Quartet. Mr. Wong is a frequent guest educator and has given master classes and lectures in many institutions of higher learning in North America and Europe including Yale University, American University, University of Iowa, Royal Academy of Music Aarhus, Middlesex University and the University of Toronto. He is also active in collaborating with directors of several up-and-coming chamber music festivals including the Geneva Music Festival (genevamusicfestival.com) and the humanitarian initiative Music Feeds Us (musicfeedsus.org).

11 Mr. Wong has performed on the most iconic stages around the world including Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Severance Hall, Kings Place, Koerner Hall and as a featured guest artist at the Aspen Ideas Festival. His chamber music collaborators have included the Tokyo Quartet, Sharon Isbin, Itzhak Perlman, Richard Stoltzman, Donald Weilerstein and pianist and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, among others. He received both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from CIM studying violin with Paul Kantor and viola with Kirsten Docter and Lynne Ramsey. Other coaches and mentors have included Peter Salaff and the Cavani and Tokyo Quartets. ABOUT THE PROGRAM MANAGER MADELINE LUCAS TOLLIVER is a flutist and arts administrator based in Cleveland, Ohio. A specialist in chamber and contemporary music, Maddi is a member of Ars Futura, the North Coast Winds and the Blue Streak Ensemble and has participated in more than 30 U.S. and world premieres. She is also a member of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, has performed with the Blossom Festival Band and Orchestra and has appeared as a soloist with the Duke University Symphony Orchestra. Tolliver studied with Valerie Simosko in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina, and at CIM with Joshua Smith (BM 2009, MM 2011). Equally dedicated to her work in arts administration, she is CIM s Interim Executive Director of Preparatory & Continuing Education and CIM Performance Operations.
