3 Guest Artists Craig Mumm, Viola Craig Mumm is associate principal violist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He began his career in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and went on to become the assistant principal violist of the Lyric Opera Orchestra of Chicago and also the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra. He grew up in Chicago and Milwaukee, where his musical studies began with his father, Edward Mumm, retired concertmaster and assistant conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Mumm earned his Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Northern Illinois University as a student of Shmuel Ashkenasi of the Vermeer Quartet. He furthered his studies in Switzerland with Zino Francescati, and while in Europe, played with the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra in Essen, Germany. Along with his position in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Mr. Mumm is a regular performer with James Levine's MET Chamber Ensemble-Weill Hall Concert series. He maintains an active career as a teacher, soloist, chamber and recording musician. Kenneth Martinson, Viola Kenneth Martinson, assistant professor of Viola at University of Florida, received his M.M. (Viola Performance) from the Eastman School of Music (1994) as a student of Martha Katz, and his B.M. (Viola Performance/Music Composition) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1993), where he was a student of Yizhak Schotten. He is currently serving as Secretary of the International Viola Society, and the American Viola Society, and is the founding President of the Florida Viola Society. He has also founded Gems Music Publications, a company devoted to promoting rare and previously out of print or unpublished viola scores to help broaden the available viola repertoire Mr. Martinson has held principal chairs in the Orlando, Toledo, Peoria, Lansing, Dubuque, and Santa Cruz Symphonies. Ken is a frequent recitalist and has performed intensely challenging programs such as the 4 solo sonatas of Paul Hindemith, and the complete sonatas of Darius Milhaud, also on his CD released by Centaur Records [CRC 2479]. He also has two other discs released by Centaur; viola chamber music of Rebecca Clarke [CRC 2847], and Bohuslav Martinů [CRC 2852]. The Toledo Blade has described his sound as being "rich and tawny, and one would like to hear it even more". Ken has performed throughout the United States and Canada as well as Brazil, England, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Russia, and Switzerland, and was a featured guest artist at the 1999, 2002, 2005 and 2008 International Viola Congresses, and will be a featured performer at the 2009 Congress in South Africa. Monica Biacchi, Viola Monica Biacchi studied under Karen Tuttle at the Juilliard School and with Vladimir Mendelssohn at the Hague and Rotterdam conservatories. She was awarded a diploma in 1990 from Fiesole School of Music in Florence, Italy, under Maestro Piero Farulli. She attended master classes with the Tokyo String Quartet and Guarneri String Quartet. Her earlier studies took place from at the Parma Conservatory, Italy, under Luigi Mazza. Biacchi's professional experience includes the Charleston Symphony, Spoleto Festival Orchestra and Tanglewood Music Festival. Biacchi is currently the associate principal violist of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. Pamela McConnell, Viola Pamela McConnell (Professor of Viola at the University of Miami, Florida), is recognized as a concert violist, an adjudicator and master teacher. She has recently gained notoriety as a result

4 of her arrangements for String quartet of the much loved orchestral works, Saint Seans' Carnival of the Animals, and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. She has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout North and South America, Europe, South Africa, Australia, Japan, and Korea, and in the United States at such prestigious venues as the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, the Gardner Museum of Boston, the Free Library of Philadelphia, Carnegie Hall in Pittsburgh, and Kleinhans Hall in Buffalo. She has been a member of the faculties of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the State University of New York at Buffalo, where, as a member of the Rowe Quartet, she shared a Peabody Award. McConnell serves as violist in the Bergonzi String Quartet, the quartet in residence at the University of Miami Frost School of Music in Coral Gables, Florida, the Pine Mountain Music Festival in Upper Peninsula Michigan and at Madeline Island Music Camp. She also is a visiting faculty performer at Sewanee Summer Music Center in Tennessee and Bowdoin Music Festival in Maine. She serves as Coordinator of String Chamber Music at the University of Miami. She is Founder and Director of The University of Miami String Academy, a preparatory department at the Frost School of Music. She received a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and an M.M. degree from the University of Texas at Austin, studying under such luminaries as Walter Trampler, Leonard Shure, George Neikrug, and Andor Toth. Ms. McConnell can be heard on the Orion, Fleur de son, Naxos, Living Artist, Audiofon, and Centaur labels. John T. Posadas, Viola A native of Henderson, KY, John T. Posadas began musical studies at the University of Evansville with Carol Dallinger. Since then, he has collaborated with many artists including Edgar Meyer, Joseph Silverstein, James Dunham, Alex Kerr, and Anton Nel to name a few. Recitals have taken him across the country and abroad with appearances at the Kennedy Center, Severance Hall, Tanglewood, Aspen, Juilliard, Houston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Las Galas Festival in Mexico. As a member of the award-winning Kailas Quartet, he has performed throughout the country garnering top prizes at Fischoff and Chamber Music International. Season highlights include chamber music and solo appearances in Montreal, at the University of South Florida, Sarasota, and Naples. He is currently faculty at USF in Tampa and performs with the Sarasota Orchestra. This season he will begin playing with the Naples Philharmonic. Richard Sortomme, Composer As one of the major composers of our time, Richard Sortomme boasts a steady output of commissioned compositions with The Cleveland Orchestra and New York Philharmonic. Graduating from Juilliard as a concert violinist with extensive training in composition and musical theory, his performing career has centered on two chamber music groups. As Music Director, he created "For the Love of Music" and performed at Merkin Concert Hall for ten seasons and at The Library of Congress. He also created "L'Ensemble" that has performed at historic sites throughout the United States and performed joint concerts with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Tracey Rush, Composer Tracey Rush has recently finished a four-year stint as chair of the Iowa Composers Forum. Mrs. Rush s works have been performed all over the United States in concerts and at festivals, including the Naples (FL) Philharmonic under the direction of Eric Kunzel, the Knoxville (TN) Symphony under the direction of Kirk Trevor, and the Pittsburgh (PA) Symphony, conducted by Lucas Richmond. She has been commissioned by numerous schools and professional ensembles. She has a BS in music education from Bob Jones University and is completing her MME from the

5 University of Northern Iowa. In addition to being principal violist in the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, Mrs. Rush is instructor of music appreciation at Northeast Iowa Community College and teaches junior high strings for the Dubuque Community School District. She founded and directs the Dubuque Community String Orchestra and is currently the executive director of the Northeast Iowa School of Music in Dubuque, Iowa, which she founded in Mary Ann Mumm, Violin Mary Ann Mumm grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and studied with Gerald Stanick of the Fine Arts Quartet. She earned her Master of Music Performance degree from Indiana University as a performance scholarship student and graduate teaching assistant of Josef Gingold. In addition, she has performed on chamber music seminars with the Juilliard, Guarneri, and Fine Arts Quartets. Ms. Mumm played for 17 years with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra
