1 News of note Happenings in the SWFL Symphony Society November 2017 Volume 22 Issue 3 Opening Night Saturday November 4, 2017 Lobby Barbara B. Mann The Maestro Returns! See page 6 President s Message It was wonderful to see so many of you at the October luncheon meeting, where we presented Symphony President Tom Uhler with a check for $8650 raised from our Key Signatures project. Thank you very much to all who participated in this fundraising project. Your generosity will be recognized in the Symphony program book distributed at every concert. November is packed with a number of enticing events. First, don t miss the opportunity to show Maestro Nir Kabaretti how much we appreciate him at a special reception, The Maestro Returns, which celebrates the start of the season and the signing of a new three year contract with Dear Society Members, our beloved conductor. This gala event takes place on November 4 at BB Mann, just before the first Masterworks concert. Then, on November 10, enjoy a fabulous party at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, called Tastes and Sounds of America, which features foods from across America and an amazing line up of talent presenting various genres of American music. This will be a perfect way to celebrate America on the eve of Veteran s Day. Dedicated committee members have been working hard to make these events special. But, they cannot succeed without YOU! If every member brought just one or two friends or neighbors with them to an event, we would have a great success! And you and your friends will have fun! Look for details later in this newsletter. And make your reservations now!! Inside This Issue Speaking of fun, we also have a Treat on November 15 called Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Shopping with friends at the fun filled Razzle Dazzle boutique and John Michael Jewelers, while enjoying wine and appetizers. Of course, that will be fun! As we all count our blessings at Thanksgiving, I am very grateful for so many wonderful, supportive friends that I have met through the Symphony Society in my short time in SWFL. I am also thankful for the opportunities the Society offers to perform meaningful work for the good of our community. I hope that each of you also have many blessings to count on this Thanksgiving. Anne Wardlow SWFS Musical Family, it is with great joy that I extend a warm welcome to you, our dedicated family of music lovers! Brace yourselves for the magic and excitement of our new season of music! At the center of our season, we will bring you beloved and timeless masterpieces from the symphonic repertoire including Dvorak s New World Symphony, Tchaikovsky s 5th Symphony, Brahms Symphony No. 1 and many others. Together with our wonderful and talented musicians, I am thrilled to share the stage with phenomenal guest artists who will perform some of the most beautiful concerti of all times! You will not want to miss our collaboration with the Symphonic Chorale of Southwest Florida in the enigmatic Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Our Small Stage Series offers a wide range of musical styles from Baroque to the contemporary and I am sure you will also enjoy our four Pops programs with some of the best hits from the Beatles to Broadway, a full screening of Harry Potter with a live orchestra and of course our traditional Holiday Pops concert. I wish to express my sincere and profound thanks to you, our Symphonic Society members, and to our loyal audience the heartbeat of our symphony. Your support inspires our creativity and strengthens our desire to always strive for the highest musical levels. Thank you for being our most valuable partners in our mission to keep classical music alive and enrich our Southwest Florida community. Musically yours, Nir Kabaretti Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Luncheon; Food Bank; Fundraisers! 3 N EWS OF NOT E PA GE 3 Our official first luncheon of the season was the occasion of our first check presentation proceeds from our Key Signatures project. Tom Uhler, President of the Symphony s Board of Trustees, received the check from Anne Wardlow. Chuck Fuechsel gave a short presentation on the science of music. Who knew Pythagoras had such a hand in our current tuning system? Chuck later joined Pam Simon in delighting us with a few well-loved songs. October 19th SWFLSO with Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center hosted Hurricane Irma Benefit Concert featuring Maestro Nir Kabaretti, Concertmaster Reiko Niiya & Symphony musicians. Sponsored by United Way of Lee County and Crowne Plaza Fort Myers at Bell Tower Shops. A Note From Amy It was wonderful to finally reconnect with our Symphony Society at the luncheon last month and to introduce many of you to our new Director of Strategic Marketing and Development, Ashley McNaughton. Ashley joined the symphony staff in May and has been an invaluable asset since her arrival. If you didn't have an opportunity to meet her at the luncheon, please stop by the office or find her at the concert hall and introduce yourself. She is a lovely and creative person in so many ways who is as passionate about symphonic music as the rest of us. We're fortunate to have her as part of our team. Please help us make her feel welcome. As I write November's article, the vibrant energy of concert season continues to build. Our Hurricane Irma Relief Benefit Concert in partnership with the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center continues to raise much needed money for the United Way of Lee County's Hurricane Relief Fund, even in advance of the performance. We are only days away from our opening Pops Concert and the phone is ringing off the hook at our box office (and the Barbara B. Mann box office) with Classical Mystery Tour ticket buyers, many of whom have never attended one of our performances! I have every expectation that we, the orchestra and the Society, will win many new hearts (and members) on October 21st. This newsletter should arrive in inboxes and mailboxes just before our opening Masterworks Gala and Concert and tickets to Masterworks I are also selling briskly. As official sponsors of this performance, I'm hopeful that every Society member who is able of attend this concert comes to enjoy and celebrate the great music your work made possible that night. Remember, as Society members, you have exclusive access to $25 tickets. Also - don't forget: the evening before Masterworks I is our Annual Meeting, which also happens at Barbara B. Mann Hall at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium. This meeting is open to the public and offers a great opportunity to learn about where we were and how we did last season in addition to where we're headed this season and in seasons to come. It's also a great opportunity to learn more about what the symphony's volunteer and financial needs are and what you can do to contribute. Wishing all of you a beautiful Thanksgiving filled with the love of family and friends, bountiful tables and the sounds of great music surrounding you. Looking forward to seeing you in December! Amy Ginsburg SWFL Symphony Executive Director
4 PA GE 4 VOLUME 22, I SSU E 3 Symphony of Treats HURRY! HURRY! Reservations are arriving daily for Treats and you do not want to miss out on the one(s) you want to attend. Some are already filled, but you can be placed on a 'wait list'. That means that if a space on a Treat becomes available, (someone has cancelled) the first on the 'wait list' will be notified. Remember, though, once a reservation is made, our policy is that money is not returned for a cancellation. Call me or Roz for more information. We want to remind members about the "COME, HEAR THE MUSIC" Treats on the Saturday mornings of the classical concert rehearsals. I keep hearing remarks from some members that they would love to attend concerts, but are unable to go out in the evening. To those members and their guests, take advantage of the coffee and concert at 10:15 a.m. in the lobby of the BBMPAH on those dates, only $20. The "GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN" treat at Razzle Dazzle evening on Cape Coral Blvd. is fast approaching - Wednesday, Nov. 15. $15. See you there! As always, Thank you for your support of the SYMPHONY OF TREATS! Kim Wittstadt, Roz Lesser and Roseanne Taylor Hi, I m your NON Editor! Submissions/Ads due on the 10th of the month to: Sharyl Leifeld sharyl@sharyl-leifeld.com Please submit your entries for the December NON November 10th. Thank you for all your great ideas and assistance! SYMPHONY SOCIETY BRIDGE MARATHON Well, this has been an exciting summer. I sincerely hope you all fared well in spite of Nature s tumultuous demands. Now that life is returning to normal many of the flights are getting a late start and have openings, so if you (and maybe a partner) would like to support the Symphony it is not to late to join us. The Bridge Marathon is seeking more players so that we can bring our contribution back to $4,000 a year. If you love bridge and you love the Symphony, you may contact me at The Symphony and the Society Bridge Marathon lost one of its greatest contributors this past year. As in her generous involvement with the Symphony, Joan Calder was always willing to serve she enjoyed playing bridge and organized a flight and became its flight leader. In my absence, with the assistance of Linda Knight, she stepped in to assume the role of chairman of the Bridge Marathon and its luncheons. She will be missed as a leader, co-worker, and above all, a friend. Another great contributor to the Society and the Bridge Marathon who is stepping aside is Linda Farris. Linda has been a linchpin in the Marathon at Heritage Palms Country Club. As a leader of Heritage bridge lovers, her generous time and effort through many years brought about camaraderie as well as support for the Society. Her Heritage group contributed thousands of dollars to the Symphony keeping it an essential part of the culture in Fort Myers. It was a pleasure working with Linda and a good friend. Linda will continue to be involved with Marathon bridge and attend the luncheons. We all thank you, Linda - Vicki
