10 EVENTS Latvian Song and Dance Festival LATVIAN SONG AND DANCE FESTIVAL For a whole week in the summer 2018 Riga will be taken over by the most grandiose festival in Latvia the "Latvian Song and Dance Festival" gathering tens of thousands of singers and dancers from everywhere in Latvia, who will fill the city with sounds of folk music. This festival with its greatness, quality and diversity is a unique event on a world scale; therefore it has been included in the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Riga, PHOTO STUDIO RĪGA EXHIBITION SONG AND DANCE FESTIVAL :00-20:00 A retrospective photo exhibition by member of the photography club, where moments from Song and Dance Festivals from the past have been captured choirs performing on the grand stage, chief conductors Imants and Gvido Kokars, grand dance performances at the Daugava Stadium, the festival procession, moments between performances, festival atmosphere, as well as the joy and emotions of festival participants. VEF Culture Palace LATVIAN CRAFT FAIR, MASTERCLASSES :00-22:00 During the entire week of the Song and Dance Celebration, craft fairs will be operating in Vermanes Garden and the Esplanade Park. Here you will have the opportunity to admire and purchase the work of craftspeople from all regions of Latvia and enjoy a wide-ranging concert programme. Latvian National Museum of Art EXHIBITION LATVIA EVOLVING. A RETROSPECTION OF LATVIAN APPLIED ART OF THE PAST 100 YEARS :00-17:00 Ceramics, amber processing, weaving and knitting, the wide use of wood, works by blacksmiths, diverse wicker works and other less common activities covering almost all the possible manifestations, applied arts became one of the main expressions of Latvian national identity during the previous century. Latvian Ethnographic Open-air Museum EXHIBITION SONG DAY AND SONG FESTIVAL BADGES FROM LATVIA S REGION. 19TH CENTURY TO :00-17:00 Song Day traditions in Latvia began already before the first Song Festival, but especially during the independence years from 1920 to Not only regional song festival were held in Latgale, Northern Vidzeme, Lower Kurzeme and Zemgale, but in countries and towns throughout the country. Following tradition, special pins were specially made to commemorate not only the nationwide Song Festival, but regional ones as well. It marks out the beginnings, the roots and the flourishing of this style in Europe, allowing one to sense the originality of Latvian Art Nouveau more clearly, as well as showing the most prominent achievements from Art Nouveau metropolises. SECOND HALF OF 19TH CENTURY TO :00-17:00 This exhibition is dedicated to innovations introduced in Riga from the second half of the 19th century until 1918, ones that impacted the daily lives of residents. The exhibition will feature items used in the home produced in Riga, as well as elsewhere in Europe, Russia and the United States and were sold in shops in Riga at the time. An open and democratic atmosphere with elegant classical music in the background, where persons can enjoy their breakfast in the castle gardens with the sweet smells of summer all around them. Sigulda Livonian Order castle FASHION MUSEUM EXHIBITION THE GOLDEN TWENTIES :00-19:00 The 1920s these are the youth days of the 20th century, a magnificent time when it began to become clearer how the new century will look. This colorful era was characterized by the elegant Art Deco style one of the most beautiful pages of the history of 20th century design. This unique exhibition at the Riga Fashion Museum will feature costumes, accessories and clothing in the Art Deco style from the 20th century slender gowns with sparkling pearls, elegant shoes etc. Fashion Museum GROUP EXHIBITION CLONE :00-18:00 (II, IV-VII), 11:00-19:00(III) The exhibition Clone (Klons in Latvian) is explained in two aspects. On one hand, a clay klons is an old Latvian identity code, which points out to the origin of the ceramic material and its quality. On the other hand, the word clone highlights the opportunities provided by modern technologies creating a clone for anything. In combining these two aspects, the artists will search for their ideas through a self-portrait prism. Riga Porcelain Museum EXHIBITION COLOUR OF GOBELINS. CONTEMPORARY GOBELINS FROM THE "MOBILIER NATIONAL" COLLECTION IN FRANCE :00-17:00 (II, IV-VII), 11:00-19:00 (III) This unique exhibition, which will be held as part of the 6th Riga International Textile and Fiber Art Triennial, where so-called "Gobelins" will be displayed based on designs by famous painters: Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, the legendary French "Gobelin" master Jean Lurcat, as well as the works of other authors. Publicity photo 1ST RIGA INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART :00-20:00 (VI,VII), 10:00-18:00 (III), 13:00-20:00 (IV, V) The inaugural edition of the Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA), titled Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More, runs from 2nd of June until 28th of October Curated by Katerina Gregos, the biennial takes place at various venues in Riga and Jurmala. Including works by 104 artists (a third of which are from the Baltic countries), the biennial presents a large number of new commissions, 10 outdoor sculptures and "site-specific interventions". Night blossoms. 80x120, 2018 PROCESSION OF THE NATIONWIDE LATVIAN SONG AND DANCE FESTIVAL PARTICIPANTS :00-21:30 During the week when Riga is taken over by the most magnificent Latvian festival Nationwide Song and Dance Festival tens of thousands of singers and dancers gather together from all over Latvia. The procession of the festival is the culmination of this event in the city environment. Both participants and organisers of the festival take part therein. Freedom Monument FIFA WORLD CUP COME AND JOIN THE FANS! Football is the king of sports, and the FIFA World Cup takes place this summer. If you are a true football fan, come to the fan pavilion in the Kronvalds Park, where you can cheer for your favourite football team together with other football fans. This exhibition brings together the works of jewelry artists from Latvia and abroad. Putti Art Gallery EXHIBITION FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC OF LATVIA :00-19:00 (II), 11:00-18:00 (III-VI) This year, when many Latvian museums and other cultural institutions, in celebration of Latvia s centenary, are putting together exhibitions and various events in honor of this event, the Romans Suta and Aleksandra Beļcova Museum is featuring an exhibition about 1919, when the Republic of Latvia was celebrating its first anniversary as an independent nation. This was a time of great exhibitions, the founding of high schools and museums, and a flourishing social and cultural scene the important events of the time will be chronicled through illustrations and documents, as well as works of art. Sometimes creation of a piece of art coincides with the essence of the ritual. Sometimes ritual and art is the same. Also, there might be nothing in common in creation of art and ritual because it is a work demanding patience and 12

MuseumLV LAURA PERGOLIZZI IN CONCERT :00 One of the world s most original contemporary indie and pop-rock artists Laura Pergolizzi will perform a concert at the medieval Sigulda Castle, located among stunning scenery in the Gauja River Valley. Sigulda Livonian Order castle FRIENDSHIP CONCERT FEATURING JAPAN ASSOCIATION OF LATVIAN MUSIC MIXED CHOIR GAISMA AND VEF PALACE OF CULTURE WOMEN S CHOIR DZINTARS :00 This year marks the 25th anniversary since the friendship began between the Japan Association of Latvian Music mixed choir Gaisma (Light) and the VEF Palace of Culture women s choir Dzintars (Amber). The Gaisma choir will be visiting Latvia to participate in the Song and Dance Festival, and will also perform several concerts, including with the Dzintars choir on July 3 at the VEF Palace of Culture s Chamber Hall. Roses are invincible in their diversity, therefore sometimes it is hard to select the right variety for one s garden or character. Blossoms can be used in various ways in flower bouquets, in compositions. By regularly removing the old blossoms, swordlilies stay beautiful for a long time. This year cultivators and collectors of the Latvian Gladiolus and Iris Society will present more than 150 varieties of swordlilies. Natural History Museum of Latvia ORCHESTRA RIGA CONCERT BACH, RESPIGHI, RAVEL :00 The concert will be conducted by the winner of several international competitions and one of Latvia s prominent conductor Ainārs Rubiķis. Italian composer Ottorino Respighi s four-part opus Vetrate di Chiesa (Church Windows) was composed in 1922, and portrays the bible scenes depicted on the church windows of various churches. The concert will be special by the fact that these compositions will be performed together at Riga Cathedral by both the orchestra and the cathedral s magnificent organs. Riga Dome Cathedral RIGA FESTIVAL , , On the nation s centenary, this year s Riga City Festival will feature the creative legacies of many great Latvians in the context of the country s history and culture. As Riga celebrates its 817th anniversary, one of the more special events to take place will the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Riga Latvian Society: for three whole days Vērmane Park and the Riga Society Building will turn back the pages of history, revealing to festival goers the time more than a century ago when the Riga Latvian Society was established. Vērmanes Garden Park JURIS BERGINS EXHIBITION FROM ABEL TO CAIN :00-18:00 (II-VII) Juris Bergins is one of the outstanding Latvian ceramists whose character is brightly visible in Latvian and European art. The artist currently is living and working in Lithuania. Juris Bergins is known for his extravagant style bright works, full of symbols that wittily refer to artifacts of the time. 35 AUGUST 2018 Platu 25 Yachting World Championship PLATU 25 YACHTING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP The Platu 25 Yachting World Championship will be held in Riga this year. The championship will take place at the Daugava estuary in the Gulf of Riga, with spectators being able to view the event from the Mangaļsala Pier. Various events will also be held in the Daugava River in downtown Riga, which can be viewed from both sides of the river. Furthermore, it will also be able to view the event on the water as well. This will certainly be one of the most impressive and visually enjoyable events to be held in the Latvian capital this year. 44 EVENT CALENDAR Kauguri Autumn Festival KAUGURI AUTUMN FESTIVAL A beautiful annual tradition in Jūrmala a colorful festival in Kauguri dedicated to the conclusion of the summer season. Both young and old are invited to participate in collective events throughout the day, as well as become involved in various creative workshops and other fun activities. The festival will culminate with a concert in the evening, which will be followed by a grand fireworks show. Jurmala, Kauguri ANDREJS OSOKINS CONCERT :00 Outstanding Latvian piano player Andrejs Osokins will perform in the event that is dedicated to the 105th anniversary of culture center Ziemeļblāzma. In some pieces he will be joined by Katrīna Gupalo. The concert will feature musical pieces of J. Vītols, V. Dārziņš, J. S. Bach, L. von Beethoven, S. Rachmaninoff and others. Culture centre "Ziemeļblāzma" LATVIAN CYCLING UNITY RIDE :00 The largest national cycling event in the Baltic States. Latvian Cycling Unity Ride has been one of the most important Latvian sports events in the interwar period and also after regaining independence. The idea of the cycling ride has not changed over time it strengthens the feeling of national unity, improves health, and promotes environmental preservation. Sigulda, Festivity Square THE CRAFTS DAY. DAY OF GAMES AND PLAYING :00-16:00 Every year in September this event gathers craftsmen from all parts of Latvia blacksmiths, potters, carpenters, wicker-work craftsmen and weavers. Both masters and apprentices arrive at the museum to demonstrate their masterpieces, inviting both big and small ones to participate and also try out the ancient tools. Latvian Ethnographic Open-air Museum RETRO BUS PARADE :45-22:00 The Riga International Coach Station will host a Retro Bus Parade, dedicated to the anniversary of the Tallinn-Riga-Tallinn bus route. Latvian National Opera and Ballet ART EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY AND WINE FERMENTATION IN JEWELRY :00-18:00 (I-V), 11:00-17:00 (VI) Fermentation in jewelry (Gioielli in Fermento) is an international contemporary jewelry competition in Italy. The source of this project s inspiration has its roots in the wine making culture. As a metaphor for the fermentation process in wine, when a healthy, live element of nature the grapes turns into a different form wine, with a different taste, character and price. Constructing similar thinking about the process of creating contemporary jewelry turning various materials into a special and industrial form jewelry. There are four main provisions in this competition: the concept, materials, the type of artistic expression and technique. 46 EVENTS Modern arts forum White Night MODERN ARTS FORUM WHITE NIGHT Metaphorically speaking (in the Romantic languages), white nights mean "sleepless" nights, and this year as usual in early September, you are cordially invited to join the crowd in experiencing a sleepless night chock full of surprises. The evening will packed full of various contemporary art form concerts, installations and performances in the the urban environment, exhibitions, multimedia projects, poetry readings, film screenings etc. Participating in the organization of the night will be various art galleries, cafes, art and cultural studios, as well as other active Riga residents and like minded individuals. This year the festival s theme will be connected with the centenary celebrations of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, thus the festival will emphasize the work of Baltic artists. Natural History Museum of Latvia BALLET PEER GYNT :00 Henrik Ibsen s world famous dramatic poem (1867) is the basis for this new fulllength ballet. The plot centers on the adventurous Peer Gynt, having gone off into the world in search of..., finally returns home a mature man where his beloved Solweig has waited for him. Will this courtship be Peer s last adventure? The illustrious Slovenian choreographer Edward Klug has modernized the proceedings and chooses elements of irony, absurdism and surrealism as his main tools of expression, all set to Edvard Grieg s lilting melodies. Latvian National Opera and Ballet OPERA THE ROSE OF TURAIDA :00 The Rose of Turaida, an opera by Zigmars Liepiņš and with the libretto by Kaspars Dimiters, is a musically and theatrically fresh remake of the opera No Rozes un Asinīm (From Rose and Blood). It s a story about the events of 1620, during which the protagonists continue to live out their passions a story that moved conductor Mārtiņš Ozoliņš and director Ināra Slucka to portray this melodious drama as a timeless legend about Maija s love and loyalty. 47 SEPTEMBER 2018 FIA World Rally Championship /Latvia round/ KREMERATA BALTICA FESTIVAL , :30, :00, :00 In 1997, the internationally acclaimed violinist Gidons Kremers introduced the world the a completely new orchestra- the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra made up of young musicians from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The orchestra quickly captivated audiences with its unrestrained joy and exuberance and with the variety and vitality of its programming. In just a few years, this talented group of musicians has developed into one of the best chamber orchestras in the world, with an excellent reputation performing at many of the world s most prestigious concert halls. This year the chamber orchestra returns to the Dzintari Concert Hall with its annual festival.
