2 Welcome to the Musical Arts Center In celebration of Distinguished Professor David Baker s 80th birthday, his 60-year career as a jazz musician and educator, and the 45 years he has nurtured generations of artists at the Jacobs School, we welcome the musical world to Bloomington this weekend to celebrate a man who is greatly loved and admired. A Sagamore of Indiana, a Living Jazz Legend, an Emmy Award winner, and a Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize nominee, David s work as a musician, composer, conductor, and author continues to inspire and transform the lives of countless performers and educators around the world. David s more than 65 recordings, 70 books, 400 articles, and 2,000 compositions including jazz, symphonic, and chamber works are a testament to the prolific brilliance of a man who means so much to so many. In addition to being a distinguished professor of jazz studies and founder and chair of the Jacobs School Jazz Studies Department, David is the conductor and artistic director of the historical Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. I know nothing could mean more to David than for his former and current students and colleagues to gather for this very special occasion, and we thank all those whose efforts have made this possible. Baker David Nathaniel Baker, Jr. (born 1931) a native of Indianapolis, Ind., is distinguished professor of music and chair of the Department of Jazz Studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. A virtuoso performer on multiple instruments and top in his field in several disciplines, Baker has taught and performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. He is also the conductor and musical and artistic director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Baker received both bachelor s and master s degrees in music education from Indiana University and has studied with a wide range of master teachers, performers, and composers, including J. J. Johnson, Bobby Brookmeyer, Janos Starker, George Russell, William Russo, Bernard Heiden, and Gunther Schuller, among others. A 1973 Pulitzer Prize nominee, Baker has been nominated for a Grammy Award (1979) and honored three times by DownBeat magazine as a trombonist, for lifetime achievement, and, most recently (1994), as the third inductee to its Jazz Education Hall of Fame. He has received numerous awards, including the National Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame Award (1981), IU President s Award for Distinguished Teaching (1986), the Arts Midwest Jazz Masters Award (1990), the Governor s Arts Award of the State of Indiana (1991), the American Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts (2000), the Indiana Historical Society s Living Legend Award (2001), the James Smithson Medal from the Smithsonian Institution (2002), an Emmy Award (2003) for his score for the PBS documentary For Gold and Glory, honorary doctorates from Oberlin College (2004) and New England Conservatory (2006), the Living Jazz Legend Award from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2007), and the Sagamore of the Wabash award from the governor of Indiana (2011). Baker has been commissioned by more than 100 individuals and ensembles, including Josef Gingold, Ruggerio Ricci, Janos Starker, Harvey Phillips, the New York Philharmonic, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Beaux Arts Trio, Fisk Jubilee Singers, Louisville Symphony, Ohio Chamber Orchestra, the Audubon String Quartet, and the International Horn Society. His compositions over 2,000 in number range from jazz pieces, symphonic works, and chamber music to film scores. A dedicated music educator as well as a composer and performer, Baker s involvement in music organizations has encompassed membership on the National Council on the Arts; board positions for the American Symphony Orchestra League, Arts Midwest, and the Afro-American Bicentennial Hall of Fame/Museum; and past chairs of the Jazz Advisory Panel to the Kennedy Center and the Jazz/Folk/Ethnic Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts. Baker is past president and past vice president of the International Association for Jazz Education, past president of the National Jazz Service Organization, and continues to serve as senior consultant for music programs for the Smithsonian Institution. He has served six times on the Pulitzer Prize music jury. He has more than 65 recordings, 70 books, and 400 articles to his credit.

7 Guest Biographies A lifelong resident of New Albany, Ind., Jamey Aebersold is an internationally known saxophonist and jazz educator. The largest publisher of jazz educational materials in the world, his series of Play- A-Long recordings and books now numbering over 120 are used worldwide by student and professional musicians alike. As director of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops for 40 years, he has taught and inspired thousands of student jazz musicians from around the world. The Summer Jazz Workshops which have been featured on CBS s Sunday Morning program have traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Germany, England, Scotland, Denmark, and Canada. Alumni of these camps include many famous jazz musicians, including Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett, and Chris Potter, as well as many of the musicians onstage tonight. Aebersold attended Indiana University, earning a Master of Music degree in saxophone in He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music by IU in In 1989, he was inducted into the Jazz Educators Hall of Fame by the International Association of Jazz Educators. The Jazz Midwest Clinic awarded him the Medal of Honor in Jazz Education in Aebersold has taught at three Louisville-area universities, including The University of Louisville, which is now home to the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program. He continues to be a major force in jazz education. Aside from his musical pursuits, Aebersold is an avid basketball player, who is proud to note that he has, on at least one occasion, hit 50 free throws in a row. Since moving to New York in 1985, pianist Jim Beard has toured the world extensively with some of the greatest names in music, including Steely Dan, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, and John McLaughlin. He has recorded and performed with artists from an extremely wide range of musical styles from Dizzy Gillespie to the Brecker Brothers, Madeleine Peyroux to John Mayer, Toninho Horta to Steve Vai. Beard has over 100 published compositions featured on recordings by John McLaughlin, Michael Brecker, and many others, and in books such as The New Real Book. He has appeared with the Metropole Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and performed in major festivals such as JVC, Montreux, Live Under the Sky, North Sea, and Montreal. He has also performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Blue Note (New York and Japan), CBGBs, Montmartre, and many more. Beard has produced recordings including Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, Medeski Martin & Wood, Bill Frisell, Marcus Miller, and Esperanza Spalding. He has taught and continues to teach at renowned music institutions around the world, such as the Mason Gross School of Arts, Berklee College of Music, Aaron Copland School of Music, and the Sibelius Academy in Finland. Beard has recorded five solo CDs: Song of the Sun, Lost at the Carnival, Truly, Advocate, and Revolutions. His music productions and compositions have been nominated for seven Grammy awards, and he won a Grammy in 2007 as a featured performer on Some Skunk Funk by the Brecker Brothers.

8 By the age of 14, saxophonist Ralph Bowen was performing professionally with major jazz artists in the Toronto, Canada, area. In 1985, he won the audition for Blue Note Records co-leader position of the contemporary all-star New York-based jazz band Out of the Blue. He would eventually record four albums for Blue Note. In 1986, Bowen won the saxophone chair with the internationally acclaimed Michel Camilo Quintet. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Horace Silver Quintet for a three-year period. He has performed and/or recorded with notables including Charles Fambrough, Orrin Evans, Wynton Marsalis, Jim Beard, Renee Rosnes, Branford Marsalis, Dennis Chambers, Ron Carter, Michel Camilo, Horace Silver, Kenny Garrett, Michael Brecker, Ralph Peterson, Shirley Scott, the Bob Mintzer, Art Blakey, Village Vanguard big bands, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra. As a co-leader of the band Free Trade, he won the 1994 Juno Award for Best Canadian Jazz Album of the Year. Bowen attended the Jacobs School of Music as an artist diploma student in the mid-1980s under the tutelage of professors David Baker and Eugene Rousseau. He went on to complete his B.M. and M.M. degrees from Rutgers University. He holds an associate professor position at Rutgers University and a visiting associate professor position at Princeton University. Bowen appears on over 70 CDs as a sideman and has released eight solo CDs. His latest recording, Power Play, featuring Orrin Evans, Kenny Davis, and Donald Edwards has been well received. Bowen is endorsed by Henri Selmer Paris saxophones; Vandoren reeds, mouthpieces, and ligatures; and Avanti Flutes by Conn-Selmer exclusively. Nationally recognized saxophonist Rob Dixon has worked with a wide variety of artists, from the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra to Ali from A Tribe Called Quest. In addition to working full time as a musician, Dixon is the A&R vice president for the Owl Studios record label and is one of the principal organizers of Indy Jazz Fest. A graduate of Hampton University, Dixon studied for two years in the Jacobs School s graduate jazz studies program before moving to New York City in 1996, where he established himself as a professional musician, working with the Count Basie band, Rufus Reid, the Ellington band, composer Bill Lee (Spike Lee s father), Illinois Jacquet, Jonah Jones, and many others. Dixon returned to Indiana in 2002 and started Triology, the first group to be signed by the Owl Studios label. Recently, one of Dixon s original compositions, Soul Talk, was featured in the major motion picture Big Stan (a Rob Schneider directorial debut). Currently, Dixon works with pianist Steve Allee, Cynthia Layne, Derrick Gardner and the Jazz Prophets, the Head Hunters, Mike Clark (drummer from Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters), and the Indigo Blue band led by Mike Clark featuring Wallace Roney, Randy Brecker, Christian McBride, Donald Harrison, and Antonio Farao.

9 Trumpeter Pat Harbison is professor of jazz studies at Indiana University, where he joined the faculty in At IU, he teaches jazz improvisation and jazz history, and directs the jazz combo program. He has been on the faculty of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Workshops since He travels internationally as a jazz trumpet artist and educator, performing at jazz concerts and festivals and teaching around the world. From 1984 to 1997, Harbison taught trumpet and jazz studies at the University of Cincinnati College- Conservatory of Music. Born and raised in New Albany, Ind., he fell in love with jazz under the influence of his mentor, Jamey Aebersold. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Louisville, where he studied trumpet with Leon Rapier. After freelancing in New York City, and lessons with Carmine Caruso, he returned to Indiana to study jazz with David Baker and trumpet with William Adam while earning an M.M. at IU. Harbison currently performs with Ritmos Unidos, The Jazz Trumpet Project (with fellow Bach trumpet artists Alex Yates and Jim Ketch), the Pat Harbison Quartet, the Jamey Aebersold Quintet, and the Steve Allee Big Band. He has released four compact discs as leader or co-leader. His books, including Trumpetology, Technical Studies for the Modern Trumpet, and Twenty Authentic Bebop Solos, are used by trumpeters around the world and are published by Jamey Aebersold Jazz. Harbison plays Vincent Bach trumpets. One of America s foremost music historian educators, John Edward Hasse helps audiences understand the power music has to move and inspire us to greater heights. Hasse is a music historian, pianist, and award-winning author and record producer. He serves as curator of American music at the Smithsonian Institution s National Museum of American History, where he was founding executive director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and where he founded the national Jazz Appreciation Month, celebrated every April throughout the United States. Hasse is the author of the critically acclaimed biography Beyond Category: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington, with a foreword by Wynton Marsalis. He is the editor of the illustrated history Jazz: The First Century, with forewords by Tony Bennett and Quincy Jones. Hasse s most recent book is Discover Jazz. At the Smithsonian, Hasse was co-director of America s Jazz Heritage, a 10-year, $7-million partnership with the Wallace-Reader s Digest Fund. He led the institution s efforts to acquire the 200,000-page Duke Ellington archive and curated the traveling exhibition Beyond Category: The Musical Genius of Duke Ellington, which toured to 12 museums and 50 libraries. He also led the museum s initiative to acquire the archives of Ella Fitzgerald and co-curated the exhibition Ella Fitzgerald: First Lady of Song. He is editor of Ragtime: Its History, Composers, and Music; producerannotator of the two-cd set Beyond Category: The Musical Genius of Duke Ellington; and producer-author of the book and three-disc set The Classic Hoagy Carmichael, as well as of the compendium and six-disc set Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology, an update of Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz.

10 Robert Hurst is a highly respected and well-recognized composer, bassist, educator, recording artist, and business man. His cultivation into a membership of talented musicians from around the world was fostered by lengthy tours and Grammy Award-winning recordings featuring Charles Lloyd, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Harry Connick Jr., Terrence Blanchard, Tony Williams, Nicholas Payton, Sting, Carl Allen, Pharaoh Sanders, Barbara Streisand, Willie Nelson, Chris Botti, and Diana Krall. Hurst has won six Grammy Awards, performed on several Recording Industry of America platinum and gold recordings, and has received top-ten and five-star recognition around the globe. He was the bassist in the house band of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to His work in performing, directing, arranging, and composing on the NBC program was honored with four Emmy Awards in 1995, 1996, 1997, and Hurst has scored original music for several films, including The Wood from MTV/ Paramount Productions and Brown Sugar from Fox Films. He has performed music for the soundtracks of Ocean s Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen, and Good Night, and Good Luck. Hurst works as an associate professor of music in the Department of Jazz and Improvisation at the University of Michigan s School of Music, Theatre & Dance. He also serves on the board of directors for the John Coltrane Foundation. Hurst returns triumphant to the CD scene with his newest releases, Bob Ya Head (ranked #9 on CMJ charts) and Unrehurst, Vol. 2 (ranked by critics as a top-ten jazz CD for 2011). Shannon LeClaire is associate professor of saxophone at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she has taught for more than a decade. She completed her Doctor of Music in Saxophone Performance at the IU Jacobs School of Music in She also holds a B.A. degree from Cornish College of the Arts and a Master of Music degree from Western Washington University. As a student at IU, LeClaire studied with Eugene Rousseau and was an associate instructor in the Jazz Studies Department. She also studied with saxophone professor Ramon Ricker at the Eastman School of Music. As a performer, LeClaire is a long-time member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. In the 1990s, she toured with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. In recent years, she has been active in Boston playing with various groups and has performed abroad in Europe and South America. LeClaire is a Vandoren Artist. Since moving to New York in the late 1980s, drummer Shawn Pelton has established himself as a first-call player and recorded with a wide range of top artists. Known for his great feel; deep, soulful pocket; and a high level of musicianship across a broad range of styles, Pelton has recorded with artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Johnny Cash, Roseanne Cash, Pink, Shakira, Kelly Clarkson, Five For Fighting, Michelle Branch, Regina Spektor, Tears For Fears, Citizen Cope, Matisyahu, Jonatha Brooke, David Byrne, Renee Fleming, Edie Brickell, Marc Cohn, Richie Havens, Joan Osborne, Hall and Oates, Odette, Luciano Pavarotti, George Michael, Carly Simon, Dixie Chicks, Chris Botti, and Buddy Guy. Pelton has also performed on several Grammy-winning albums, with artists including

11 Ray Charles, the Brecker Brothers, Shakira, Shawn Colvin, and Les Paul, as well as on the Hank Williams tribute album with Bob Dylan. Such a broad discography shows a rare ability to be at home playing on a top-ten track by Pink or recording with jazz legend Abbey Lincoln or an icon like Bob Dylan. When he isn t under headphones, Pelton can be seen as part of the prestigious Saturday Night Live Band, holding down the drum chair since Trumpeter Dominic Spera s professional background includes prolific work as a composer-arranger and performances as a jazz artist. For 10 years, he performed professionally in New York City, working in television and recording studios which included the Firestone and Fred Waring television shows, City Center Ballet Orchestra, Radio City Symphony, and the Roxy Theater orchestra. He played lead trumpet in several Broadway shows, among them How to Succeed in Business; Stop the World, I Want to Get Off; and On A Clear Day, You Can See Forever. He also played in the bands of Lionel Hampton, Andy Kirk, Charlie Barnet, Billy Butterfield, Tito Puente, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Les and Larry Elgar. From 1966 to 1974, Spera played first trumpet for Burt Bacharach, Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Henry Mancini, and a host of other entertainment luminaries. He has also performed with Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, and Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, as well as with the Boston, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis Symphonies. An honor graduate from Indiana University, Spera taught jazz and trumpet at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from 1968 to He is extremely active as a clinician-director for summer jazz camps and university seminars, which include the Shell Lake Jazz Camp and the University of Alberta. He is professor emeritus of the IU Jacobs School of Music, where he taught jazz arranging and composition, jazz pedagogy, jazz ensemble, and jazz history for 20 years. Spera is very active as an international soloist, clinician composer, and author, and is composer of over 100 jazz ensemble compositions and two Disney overtures. After earning his jazz studies degree from IU in 1981, pianist and composer Michael Weiss proceeded directly to New York, where he began forging a solid reputation accompanying jazz luminaries such as Jon Hendricks, Junior Cook, Lou Donaldson, Slide Hampton, Pepper Adams, and Bill Hardman. He toured with tenor giant Johnny Griffin s quartet for 15 years and also worked with Art Farmer, George Coleman, Frank Wess, Jimmy Heath, the Jazztet, Joe Henderson, Charles McPherson, Clifford Jordan, Buddy Montgomery, Wynton Marsalis, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Weiss has led groups at the prestigious Village Vanguard, earning acclaim from The New York Times. He has headlined at the Detroit and Stanford jazz festivals and has been featured on television and radio, including Live from Lincoln Center, NPR s Jazzset, and Piano Jazz. Weiss has recorded as a leader for the Criss Cross, SteepleChase, and DIW labels. About his latest CD of original compositions, Soul Journey (Sintra), the Detroit Free Press wrote, the songs simply smoke. He also appears on recordings by Johnny Griffin, Frank Wess, Steve Grossman, Charles McPherson, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. In 1989, Weiss won second prize in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, and, in

12 2000, he earned the grand prize at the BMI/Thelonious Monk Composition Competition. As an educator, Weiss has held faculty positions at Queens College, Juilliard, and the Hartt School of Music. In , he was a visiting faculty member at the Jacobs School of Music. He presents workshops and master classes throughout the world. Scott Wendholt is a much-in-demand trumpeter and has worked with artists including Kenny Garrett, Cyrus Chestnut, Bobby McFerrin, Don Braden, and Bruce Barth. For six years, he found a home with Vincent Herring s quintet, which recorded three albums, including Folklore: Live At The Village Vanguard. Wendholt has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Africa, and Japan with these bands and others. He has performed on more than 60 CDs. His most recent quintet recording, What Goes Unsaid, on the Doubletime Jazz label, follows four critically acclaimed offerings. These include one other Doubetime release and three for the Dutch Criss Cross label. His new CD has received favorable press, including a four-star review in DownBeat. The big-band scene has sought out this trumpeter for his versatility and formidable skills. His list of credits includes The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band (led by Jon Faddis), Toshiko Akiyoshi Big Band, Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, the Bob Mintzer Big Band, the John Fedchock NY Big Band, and the Gotham Jazz Orchestra (Michael Holober). He has been a member of and featured soloist with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (formerly Thad Jones/Mel Lewis big band) for the last decade. Wendholt continues to be in demand on the playing scene as well as in the educational arena. He is on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music and teaches at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops. He is also sought as a player-clinician in many colleges and various other learning institutions around the world. Pharez Whitted is a performer, composer, producer, and educator. He has performed with such notables as Nancy Wilson, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, Joe Lovano, Elvin Jones, Ahmad Jamal, Clark Terry, Branford Marsalis, Johnny Griffin, Phil Woods, Monty Alexander, The Count Basie Orchestra, Jon Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, George Duke, John Mellencamp, Patti Austin, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Kirk Whalum, Ari Brown, and Ramsey Lewis. Whitted has a new CD on the Owl Studios label, Transient Journey, which made it to the top ten on the jazz charts and is also one of the top-50 jazz CDs played across the nation. He grew up in Indianapolis, where he attended Shortridge High School, receiving his undergraduate degree from Depauw University and his graduate degree from Indiana University. He was on the Motown jazz label, MoJazz, where he released two CDs under the name Pharez Whitted and Mysterious Cargo. Whitted is currently an assistant professor of music at Chicago State University.

13 Jack Wilkins is the director of the Jazz Studies Program at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa. An accomplished jazz saxophonist, he has five CDs out, including his latest release, The Blue and Green Project, on Summit Jazz Records. He can also be heard as a featured soloist on the CDs from critically acclaimed modern big band Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge, including the Grammy-nominated Comet s Tail, released in In addition to his teaching at USF, Wilkins serves on the faculty of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops and as a Yamaha Instrument Company clinician.
