Ms. Seal most recetly held positios as the theatre arts specialist at Mouds Park Academy ad vocal music ad theatre director at Bethlehem Academy, where she developed the school s choral ad theatre programs. AGELICA DUSAVAGE, mezzo-soprao, is a first-year doctoral studet i choral coductig at the Uiversity of Arizoa, with a mior i music educatio. JOH MCMEE is a secod-year doctoral studet i choral coductig at the Uiversity of Arizoa, with a mior i vocal pedagogy. Before movig to Tucso to study his doctorate, he taught fourth through twelveth grade choirs at Bretwood Christia School i Austi, Texas. He holds a Bachelors of Music degree i vocal music educatio from Lipscomb Uiversity i ashville, Teessee, ad a Master of Music degree i choral coductig from the Uiversity of Mississippi i Oxford, Mississippi. Jua García de Zéspedes was a Mexica composer, siger, viol player, ad teacher. Bor i Puebla, he bega sigig at the Puebla Cathedral at a youg age, ad later became the director of music at the Cathedral. Covidado is a villacico. The villacico bega as a popular secular sog i 15th-cetury Spai, but i the ew world this gere evolved to become a religious sog, usually sug i the veracular, before Mass o special feast days, sometimes icorporatig theatrical elemets such as costumes ad eve dace. Covidado is a Christmas text, celebratig the birth of Jesus with rhythmic vitality ad poetic rhyme. Mauel de Sumaya was perhaps the most sigificat Mexica bor composer of the Baroque period. From 1715 to 1738, he served as music director at the Cathedral of Mexico City, oe of the first Americas to hold such a post. His compositioal style is diverse, with some elemets of the high Reaissace ad, i later compositios, a Baroque style that icorporates both a Hadelia approach to harmoy ad the poly-choral style of Gabrieli, a style that was facilitated by the resources ad multiple orgas of the Mexico City Cathedral. Ya se Heriza ad De las Flores are both poly-choral villacicos, for six parts ad 11 parts respectively. They were both writte for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which commemorates a series of visios of the Virgi Mary that appeared to a Mexica peasat amed Jua Diego i A key compoet of the visio is the out of seaso roses that he gathered i order to prove the veracity of his claims to the church leadership. Sumaya s texts, attributed to a aoymous poet, use rich floral ad atural imagery. His music i each piece reflects his mastery of differet styles. I De las Flores, a brilliat compositio icorporatig 11 vocal lies, we hear his mastery of Baroque poly-choral techique, with each choir speakig i coversatio with the others. Together, both pieces show the skill ad mastery that has led musicologists to iclude him amogst the fiest ew world composers. The Misa Criolla, composed by Ariel Ramírez i 1963, is a sythesis of popular ad liturgical styles. It is based o South America folk music, particularly the rhythms ad melodies of Argetia. The opeig Kyrie is i the rhythm of the vidala-baguala. This music, characteristic of orther Argetia, depicts the feelig of loeliess oe has livig o a deserted high plateau. The Gloria rhythm, the caravalito,

4 is also from the same area but evokes the sese of rejoicig implicit i this part of the mass. The two sectios of the Gloria are separated by a recitative (Yaravi), which makes the cadece of the caravalito more brilliat whe it returs with a full rhythmic accompaimet. The chacerera truca, a folk theme of cetral Argetia, is the basis of the Credo. Its obsessive rhythm accetuates the professio of faith, ad the sectio eds with the fial words of prayer, which reaffirms the triumph of everlastig life. Oe of the most beautiful ad uusual Bolivia folk rhythms, the caraval cochabambio, is used for the Sactus. It has a subdued but marked beat.
