Mr. Meyer will share how he begis a typical strig orchestra rehearsal with his ow studets. He will discuss set-up, how studets are expected to eter the room ad upack, his tuig procedures, ad he will share his thoughts ad materials regardig warm-ups. 10:00 a.m. Back of the Orchestra: High School Studets Experieces...Room 162 with Alterative Seatig Practices Preseter: Tammy Yi This sessio discusses alterative seatig practices (ASP) withi a public school orchestra. Traditioally, orchestras have employed hierarchical seatig structures through the use of chair challeges ad seatig auditios i efforts to motivate studets to practice. Studets reported that ASP iflueced their awareess of self ad others, ad through their perceived experieces, they were able to trasfer their awareess to the outside world. This study asserts that usig ASP i a orchestra ca satisfy measures of musical performace ad promote a equitable classroom i which studets ca form socially just priciples to use as members of society. 11:00 a.m. No-Performace Lesso Plas...Room 162 Preseter: Richard Meyer Music educatio goes far beyod performig o a istrumet. This system has bee used at the elemetary (grades 4-6) ad middle school (grades 7-8) levels, with classes ragig i size from four to 50. 8 Biographies Guest Artists RICHARD MEYER has bee ivolved with music educatio for over 16 years. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Califoria State Uiversity of Los Ageles ad taught istrumetal music at both the middle ad high school levels i the Pasadea Uified School District for 12 years. Curretly, he directs the orchestras at Oak Aveue Itermediate School i Temple City, Califoria, ad is i charge of the city s elemetary school strig program. Mr Meyer is i his eleveth year as coductor of the Pasadea Youth Symphoy Orchestra, a 90-piece hoor orchestra composed of seveth, eighth ad ieth grade studets, which he has led i cocerts i Viea, Austria, Caregie Hall, New York City ad i Sydey, Australia. Mr. Meyer has served as a guest coductor ad cliicia o may occasios throughout Califoria, ad has bee a member of the Bellis Music Camp staff for 15 years. He has a variety of orchestral ad bad music i prit. I 1989 his compositio Celebratio (writte especially for the 1988 SCSBOA All Souther Hoor Orchestra i Califoria) wo the Natioal School Orchestra Associatio compositio cotest. Most recetly, his Geometric Daces wo the Texas Orchestra Directors Associatio compositio cotest. I 1994 he was the recipiet of the Outstadig Music Educator Award from the Pasadea Area Youth Music Coucil, ad i 1997 received the Pasadea Arts Coucil Gold Crow Award for performig arts. He lives i Arcadia, Califoria, with his wife ad three daughters. The Veezuela-bor, Spaish coductor JOSÉ LUIS GOMEZ was catapulted to iteratioal attetio whe he wo first prize at the Sir Georg Solti Iteratioal Coductors Competitio i Frakfurt i September 2010, securig a sesatioal ad rare uaimous decisio from the jury. Gomez s electrifyig eergy, talet ad creativity eared him immediate acclaim from the Frakfurt Radio Symphoy Orchestra where he was amed assistat coductor, a post created especially for him by Paavo Järvi ad the orchestra directly followig the competitio. Gomez started his musical career as a violiist, ad by the age of 11 he was cocertmaster of the Youth Orchestra of Zulia State, part of El Sistema de Orquestas Juveiles de Veezuela. He graduated i music ad violi from the Mahatta School of Music before embarkig o a Europea orchestral career. Decidig to follow his dream to have more creative iput ad ifluece o musical directio, he took coductig lessos from Lu Jia, Muhai Tag ad Joh Nelso. After just six moths of study he wo the Georg Solti competitio. Sice the he has worked with the RTVE Natioal Symphoy Orchestra of Madrid, the Housto ad Grad Rapids Symphoy Orchestras, Natioal Arts Cetre Orchestra of Ottawa, Hamburg Symphoy, Basel Sifoietta ad Orquestra Sifóica do Porto. From 2012 to 2015, he was pricipal coductor of the Orchestra 1813 Teatro Sociale di Como where he led performaces of Mozart s Le Nozze di Figaro ad Do Giovai, to ame a few. The 2016/2017 seaso saw Gomez amed music director of the Tucso Symphoy Orchestra. The seaso also icluded appearaces with Chamber Orchestra of Sa Atoio, Wiipeg Symphoy, Szczeci Philharmoic Orchestra, Orquesta Filarmóica de Gra Caaria, Daegu Symphoy Orchestra, ad retur egagemets with the Edmoto Symphoy ad the Macau Orchestra.

Mr. Kator was featured as the Youg Artist i Residece for Performace Today, ad has performed with may of today s leadig musicias icludig Joshua Bell, Jaime Laredo, Sharo Robiso, Atar Arad, Alexader Kerr ad the Pacifica Quartet. Prior to these appoitmets she was cocertmaster of the Cato Symphoy i Ohio. Prof. Roth holds udergraduate degrees from the Uiversity of Washigto ad a master s degree from the Clevelad Istitute of Music where she studied with Clevelad Orchestra cocertmaster William Preucil. laureroth@ .arizoa.edu HONG-MEI XIAO (viola) was the first-prize wier of the Geeva Iteratioal Music Competitio. Her extraordiary artistry ad brilliat virtuoso techique have gaied accolades from reviewers across the globe. A recipiet of the coveted Patek Philippe Grad Prize, Prof. Xiao has made a iteratioal career as a soloist with performaces i major cocert halls ad with orchestras of great distictio throughout the world. 10 THEODORE BUCHHOLZ (cello, chamber music coordiator) has recorded as featured artist for Cetaur ad Toccata Records, performs iteratioally as a soloist, ad is the cellist of the Deco Piao Trio. Durig the summers he teaches ad performs at the Killigto Music Festival. He previously served as presidet of ASTA-Arizoa.
