1 Frisco Cricket Published By The San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation Summer 2014 Our page 1 article is most often a thoughtful, inciteful piece by William Carter about some element of San Francisco Bay Area or California traditional jazz history or a lead-in to one of the articles later in the issue. But, because this summer has been very busy for Bill and for me, there has been very little time available to pull together a normal issue. A couple of months ago a number of SFTJF board members and staff met to inventory, consolidate, and dispose of extraneous material in our storage space. One of the items I spotted off in a dark corner was a plain corregated cardboard box. When I carried it out into the light and opened it I found it contained a stack of miscellaneous material that Jim Goggin, whose collection of items formed the basis of the Foundation archive, Bill Usually Does This by Scott Anthony Bill Carter with archive items for disposal. By the way, the empty banjo case and trunk below it looked interesting from a distance but were falling apart and completely unusable. Presumably the contents of this box must have been items that were either duplicates or were not considered interesting enough to be included with the material transferred to the Stanford Music Library a few years ago. Or it had just been overlooked.at any rate, I had never seen any of the items before and I decided to start scanning everything in the box instead of discarding it. So, instead of our normal issue, this (late) Summer Frisco Cricket will be a scrapbook of some of the scans of miscellaneous interesting photos, clippings, and trivia that were in the box. At some point in the near future, all the scans will be placed on our website in albums of related material for all to see.

Ms. Huggins was warmly welcomed to the Board. Thereupon, your Foundation s Archive was closed; possible donors of jazz materials should now contact Stanford or other public repositories. SFTJF s wider, ongoing aim is to help foster high-quality traditional jazz, regionally and worldwide. That mission is now carried out primarily via electronic media. The Foundation s main window on the world is our website -- www. sftradjazz.org -- where visitors are invited to become members at $25 per year. Benefits of membership include insider information and discounts to special events and products, and a subscription to our lively newsletter, the Cricket, now available electronically. Those wishing to continue receiving the Cricket on paper in the mail should please contact the SFTJF office manager. Thank you for your generous support over the years. Contributions in categories beyond the basic membership level are tax deductible, and the names of those contributors are published annually (unless a contributor specifies anonymity). Donations welcomed The San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation accepts gifts and grants in many forms, including his tori cal items which shed further light on the history of traditional jazz on the West Coast, such as recordings, music, newspaper clippings, pho tographs and corre spon dence. Contributions of materials or funds are tax-deductible under IRS ruling status 501(c)(3). SF Jazz on the Web The San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation has an ever-expanding web site.
