Mildred Zahradnicek GALLERY EXHIBITION Inventories: Paintings and Watercolors Ricki Klages My paintings reflect the influence of the places I have seen, visited, or lived in. Although I have lived predominantly in the American West, the thirst for the inspiration of new places, landscapes and other environments has been constant. I have had the good fortune to live several years in Northern Italy. In addition, I have spent summers and holidays in and around London, and the southwest of England. All of these environments are referenced either directly or more subtly within my paintings. Ricki Klages Green Man Using a mix of straightforward landscape representation, dream imagery, intensive observation and subtly startling images, my paintings incorporate elements of still life, landscape and the figure that connect through a narrative and suggest something out of the ordinary, even when depicting exceptionally ordinary things. I am a restless traveler and I am always missing the places I have left behind, yet always yearning for another place to go; a new adventure. I paint from a desire for beauty and otherness ; of transcendent movements that still occur in dreams, memory and magic moments in nature. I want to capture the sense of routine and ritual, the sublime with the mundane and how they can mix in equal parts. 2

5 Musicians and Artist Ricki Klages Bezzo Shrine III Ricki Klages was born in Stuttgart, Germany. She received her BFA from the University of Arizona, Tucson, and her MA and MFA in painting and drawing from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio; University of Montana, Missoula, Mont.; Epping Forest Museum, Waltham Abbey, United Kingdom; the Joint Research Center, Ispra, Italy; Galerie Knud Grothe, Copenhagen, Denmark; and Colorida Gallery, Lisbon, Portugal. J., and two Wyoming Arts Council Fellowship Grants. She was featured in juried publications, New American Paintings and the International Painting Annual 1. Klages started teaching at the University of Wyoming in the UW Department of Art in She is represented by Galerie Knud Grothe, Copenhagen, Denmark. She is the head of the Department of Art, University of Wyoming.

Theresa Bogard is an active performer combining varied interests in historical performance practice, contemporary music, chamber music, and the music of women composers. In 1988, she received a Fulbright grant to study fortepiano with Stanley Hoogland at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague in The Netherlands, and was a top-prize winner in the International Mozart Fortepiano Competition in Bruges, Belgium the following year. Bogard has presented programs of solo and chamber music in the United States, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Austria, Bolivia, Korea, Indonesia, China, and Brazil and is also featured on a compact disc recording of piano works by Louise Talma. As a collaborative pianist she can be heard on two recordings for saxophone and piano with saxophonist Scott Turpen on the Albany label, a CD of music by Hummel with Red Cedar Chamber Music on the Fleur de son Classics label and on Eastern Gems a disc of flute and piano music by Eastern European composers with flutist Nicole Riner on Centaur Records. Bogard is a Steinway artist. 6

7 Praised for her luscious, full sound and undaunted technical mastery delivered with great assurance and accomplishment (American Record Guide), flutist Nicole Riner maintains an active national presence as a recitalist and pedagogue. She has presented masterclasses at universities and conservatories across the country and has performed as a guest artist at summer festivals, chamber music series, and flute fairs in the United States, South America, and Europe. Her first solo CD, Eastern Gems, is available on Centaur Records. Much in demand as a clinician and lecturer, Riner s pedagogical writings have been published in Colorado Flutist, International Tuba-Euphonium Association Journal, and Flute Talk, and she is a regular contributing reviewer for Flutist Quarterly, the journal of the National Flute Association. Riner received a DM in flute performance and literature from Indiana University. She is currently on the faculty of the University of Wyoming and teaches for the Sulzbach-Rosenberg Summer Music Festival every August in Germany. Riner is an Altus performing artist.

J. Scott Turpen is professor of music at the University of Wyoming where he serves as director of jazz studies and saxophone professor. In demand as a performer and clinician of jazz and classical music, Turpen has performed throughout North America, Asia, Brazil, and Europe. Turpen has performed with some of the most distinguished artists in jazz and popular music including Louis Bellson, Doc Severinsen, Red Rodney, Ernie Watts, Bob Mintzer, Ray Charles, The Temptations, Frankie Valli, Crystal Gayle, and Carol Channing to name only a few. ClassicsToday reviewer Jed Distler proclaimed, The top-to-bottom evenness of (Turpen s) sonority, together with unflappable technical control will guarantee listening fun. The Macon Telegraph said of his performance of Alexander Glazounov s Concerto with the Macon Symphony Orchestra, Turpen turned the saxophone into a producer of a most rounded and liquid tone and the audience responded with a deserved enthusiasm. Turpen has recorded music for the cable television channel National Geographic and has performed, presented clinics, and adjudicated at several music events including the Gene Harris Jazz Festival, the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the University of Georgia Saxophone Performance Workshop, the Siskiyou Saxophone Workshop, the Wyoming Music Educator s Conference, the Kinser Jazz Festival, the Eastern Montana Jazz Festival, the Georgia Music Educator s Association Conference, and the Georgia Governor s Honor Program for gifted students. His two solo recordings, Tableaux and Crossover, on the ACA Digital label, have received much acclaim. Turpen is a Yamaha Performing artist and clinician and a D Addario performing artist. 8

9 Verismo Trio was founded in 2010 after active performers and recording artists Nicole Riner (flute), Scott Turpen (saxophones), and Theresa Bogard (piano) spent a blissful month learning, performing, and recording Jennifer Higdon s Dash under the composer s tutelage for a collaborative CD of her wind and string chamber music. Combining original works and arrangements for this instrumentation, along with duo and solo works of all combinations, makes for a widely varied, colorful concert experience that highlights works written since the 20th century. In their short time together, Verismo has toured the Rocky Mountain region, from the remote mountain towns of Wyoming to inner city Denver, introducing new sound concepts and new composers to audiences young and old. In the season, they served as guest artists at 37 Festival de Musica in Goiania, Brazil as part of their busy touring schedule. Verismo Trio is dedicated to championing new works for the instrumentation and enjoys collaborating with composers. Composer Dave Deason dedicated his Six New Diversions for soprano saxophone and flute to Verismo members Turpen and Riner after they premiered the piece in March 2012, and he has just completed a trio for Verismo; the first movement was premiered in Goiania, Brazil in October by the group. After Riner premiered Jason Barabba s Organism for flute and clarinet at a music festival, the trio requested a transcription for flute and soprano saxophone that could be incorporated into their concert season. Further collaborations with Barabba, Deason, and composer Ryan Jesperson, the winner of VT s first composition contest, produced three new original works for the ensemble in The trio is also active as clinicians, dedicated to training young chamber musicians in school residencies and master classes in conjunction with their performances. In this way, they hope to bring a wealth of contemporary composers to a younger audience and encourage collaborations in future generations. Verismo Trio is a faculty ensemble in residence at the University of Wyoming. Verismo Trio is proud to be on the Wyoming Arts Council Roster since July of This juried roster provides community support for presenting educational programs and concerts within the state of Wyoming Recording Chamber Music of Jennifer Higdon, Albany Records, 2013 For more information
