1 Last name: First name: Period: Musical Project Learning Target: I CAN describe and compare the types and properties of waves and explain how they interact with matter. OBJECTIVE: Apply what you have learned about the properties of waves and sound as you build, play, and explain your instruments. PROJECT DESCRIPTON: Design and build a musical instrument that can play 5 notes of increasing pitch. Play your instrument for a small group of your classmates using as many of the notes as possible. Share basic information about how your instrument works. Complete a written explanation of how you built your instrument, how your instrument creates sound, how your instrument works to change loudness and pitch, and the problems you encountered while building and tuning your instrument. You are in charge of finding materials for your instrument as well as designing and constructing it (we will have 2 days in class to do this). You can get help from family members especially if a tool, such as a saw, is needed. Materials you might want to use may include (but are not limited to): Water bottles, soda cans, baby food jars, coffee cans, tin cans, plastic tubs Copper/PVC pipes Wood pieces Cardboard, tissue boxes, shoe boxes, cereal boxes Toilet paper/paper towel rolls Straws, rubber bands Wire, zip ties, duct tape, hot glue gun/sticks, superglue Any other recyclable or garbage item you think might be useful! Use this checklist to make sure your presentation is complete: You can play at least 5 different pitched notes on your instrument. FOR MASTERY: Make up a song! (It doesn t have to be super long or complicated.) You have completed all of the questions on pages 2-3 of this packet and will be able to explain this information to your classmates during your presentation. You have practiced your presentation at least once with a parent, friend, or classmate. Important dates: Pick an instrument & complete planning sheet by: TUESDAY, May 17 th. Materials must be brought to school by: WEDNESDAY, May 18 th. finished and ready to present by: FRIDAY, May 20 th. 1

Think about the different materials you used. Choose at least THREE of those materials and explain why they worked for what you used them for. Material What you used it for Why it worked Question 2. How was sound created by your instrument? Discuss in terms of energy, vibrations, and waves. What mediums were involved? Answer Sound was created in my instrument by/when The energy needed to create the sound wave came from This created a in the which transferred to the air. The mediums involved in my instrument s sound are 2

3 3. How did you change the pitch of your instrument? Explain in terms of frequency. 4. How did you change the loudness of your instrument? Explain in terms of amplitude. 5. Draw a labeled diagram of your instrument. I changed the pitch of my instrument by For a higher pitch This made a frequency wave. For a lower pitch This made a frequency wave. I changed the loudness of my instrument by For a louder sound This made a amplitude wave. For a softer sound This made a amplitude wave. Label the special design features that help make it work. (Show what you explained in questions 2-4.) 6. What problems did you run into during construction of your instrument? What solutions did you find for these problems? The problems that I had during construction were I solved these problems by 3
