KUSC s Brian Lauritzen is traveling with the YOLA students and in his first Postcard from Japan, he tells us students who were selected for this trip had to endure a rigorous application process, which included an audition and a written essay. 12 hours on an airplane. That s never fun. And for some the young musicians of the LA Phil s Youth Orchestra LA, their flight yesterday from LAX to Tokyo s Narita (naa-ree-tah) airport was their first time ever on a plane. KUSC s Brian Lauritzen is traveling with YOLA. In today s Postcard from Japan, he tells us how these teens are tackling jet lag. For today s Postcard from Japan, KUSC s Brian Lauritzen and the LA Phil s Youth Orchestra LA ride the rails. The LA Phil wrapped up its Asia tour with two concerts in Suntory Hall in Tokyo. It was the first hall designed by Yasuhisa Toyota and it was this hall that sealed the deal for the LA Phil to hire Toyota to design the acoustics for Walt Disney Concert Hall. So, for the LA Phil, Suntory is a home away from home. But, as Brian Lauritzen tells us in his final Postcard from Japan, the LA Phil wasn t the only orchestra to take the stage at Suntory.
