2 Page 2 Peer Recognition by George Quinlan, Jr. They say the greatest honor is to be recognized by your peers, and for several decades we have celebrated the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator awards together. These awards epitomize peer recognition as the nominees come from those in the field of Music Education. Each Spring, educators nominate their colleagues for special recognition. Those nominees names are placed on a ballot with former winners making the selection. The John Paynter Lifetime Achievement award, also chosen by this panel, was named in honor of one of the members of our original Blue Ribbon committee (John Paynter, Don DeRoche & Victor Zajec). Commencement is the epitome of recognition in the academic environment. It celebrates a new beginning as students move from one stage to the next. This past week, I had the honor of celebrating a very special type of commencement at VanderCook College of Music. I currently serve on the Board of Trustees for the college, and I was honored to present a proclamation from Illinois State Senator Maddie Hunter, a resolution from the college, and a special memory book to Dr. Charles Menghini to celebrate a career which has spanned twenty-three years at the college. Dr. Charles Menghini will begin a new challenge as President Emeritus for the institution. Recently, the Chairman of Hal Leonard, Keith Mardak presented a challenge gift to the college which represents the largest gift ever for VanderCook as a challenge to complete the performance venue there. The $2.5M challenge gift requires the college to raise an equal amount from other donors, with all funds designated to help the college complete renovation of its performance center. The center, located on the college's campus at the Illinois Institute of Technology, will be the college s first dedicated performance space in its 100- plus-year history. This opportunity is unprecedented in VanderCook s history, said Dr. Charles Northwest Suburban Location: 59 W. Menghini, President. We will soon be embarking on raising the $2.5M necessary in order to realize Mr. Mardak s gift. Once we attain this goal, we will have an incredible space to continue our work in preparing music teachers." In announcing the challenge gift, Mardak noted that he chose Vander- Cook College of Music both because of its role in music education and because of his association with Menghini. "VanderCook is the leader in the preparation of music teachers," said Mardak. "And that allows my gift to go where it will do the most good, said Mardak. The college certainly has grown and flourished under the leadership of Dr. Menghini. Dr. Roseanne Rosenthal will return to the helm as President and Brian Logan & Stacey Larson Dolan will conduct the band moving forward. We cannot overlook the role his wife, Wanda, has played in supporting his work and embracing the VanderCook family for many years. I must say...bravo to the Menghinis for all you ve done for Music Education in our area. We look forward to working together to achieve the dream, the first performance venue the school has ever had in it s long history. It has, and will continue to be, an honor to call Charlie a colleague, a mentor, and most importantly, a friend. I know your passion for VanderCook and Music Education will continue to flourish in your new role and we look forward to one day seeing you as guest conductor at the opening concert in the new venue!

9 Chicagoland Edition Page 9 Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company stemming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello, serving as clinician and consultant for musical instrument and educational organizations, and countless hours of working with students and parents to assist in selecting the best instrument for their needs. He visits all store locations regularly and is available by appointment to individually help you and your students find just the right instrument. You ll see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Violin Society of Q&F America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cremona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments available from all over the world! Travels to the countries of origin and hand selecting the instruments and bows to be included in our showrooms make our instruments among the best available today. We maintain a vigilant effort to assure our customers that Quinlan and Fabish Strings are always known for their value and quality. SOMETIMES, DADS KNOW BEST! The other day I was trying to help a father understand the difference between the playability of our violins. As is available on the video on our website, I have the instruments in sections designating differences the quality of set-up materials along with the level of wood from which the instrument initially made. QF designations for our step-up line are: Standard meaning an instrument meeting all standard requirements to be designated a step-up instrument, Star where more advanced materials are used in the set-up; better strings, bridge wood, and things like that. Master where the wood from which the instrument is made is of noticeably higher quality and the set -up materials used are professional level. This distinction was something a string player might be expected to easily understand. But, this father still had questions. As we proceeded to listen to the different violins his son was trying, the father began to think aloud and began to offer his own idea of how to represent the differences between the levels of instruments. First off, he likened a rental instrument to a pedal car a child uses to learn how a car moves and steers. The standard level was your average sedan, which the child most likely will use as he learns to drive. The Star was a sports car due to higher performance and only for those players who can handle it. The master level instrument was a luxury sports car. Performance plus elegance. I thought, how perspicacious of him! Good work Dad. They ended up with a sports car. The boy was thrilled! VROOOOOM. QF TECHS EVALUATE BOWS FOR SHOWROOM All of our bows from both Arcos-Brasil and from Marco Raposo are inspected by our bow experts before they are purchased for our showroom. Both companies have excellent bows and have maintained a strong reputation among string players throughout the world. Arcos-Brasil and Marco Raposo participate in a program to plant new trees to maintain forests for future harvest. Bow planks awaiting the next step. (The thick end is the tip end not the frog end remember?) QF techs, Matt Louck & Rhiannon Owana scrutinize bows from Marco Raposo in our QF conference room. Carbon bows are popular but there is nothing quite like the feel and sound of a well balanced bow made to impeccable specifications. Matt and Rhiannon make sure our bows are just that! SENIORS STILL RENTING? YIKES!!!! Each year I am surprised and somewhat saddened when I learn the number of seniors in high school orchestra who are STILL playing on a rental instrument. Surprised because the senior didn t quit even though they have been trying to play advanced literature using a fiberglass bow think how frustrating that must be. Saddened that the parents did not understand this simple fact: If a student begins in 4 th grade, by December of their 6 th grade year, the parents will actually spend less money purchasing a Pietro Germino violin ($1776 retail), a Coda NX bow ($415 retail), and a case around $200 than they will end up paying if they rent through the senior year. For less money, the player will have a completely different experience. And, this formula is using the accrued rental credit by that December date. Despite our efforts to inform rental customer (at least 3-4 times each year), the message does not always get through to parents. Anything you, as a teacher, can do to help communicate this and advocate for your students, please do. It is valuable information for parents to have. Think about this over the summer and I ll have more info in the fall to help remind you. And, just think, using Opus 24 Plan, they would have had no rental payments for the last four years!

10 Page 10 (Prairie Crossing Charter School, Grayslake) along with Wayne Richards & Eric Goluszka, make up the Chicago Saxophone Quartet, a dynamic and virtuosic ensemble that has achieved a distinguished international reputation having performed in Europe, North America and southeast Asia, including at six World Saxophone Congresses. Recently, they performed a concert at the Arts in Bartlett Center for the Arts which included Tayloe Hardings Quartet for Saxophones. Congratulations to Cameron Bradley of Concord JHS-Elkhart, IN for the winning entry in our Facebook contest. Mt. Prospect director and trumpeter, Greg Fudala won a free clinic at this school. Since the middle school students were not available (due to testing), Joe provided an interesting and fun demonstration for the 5th grade band at Lions Park School on Friday. On Saturday, May 6th, Joe worked with students to help select instruments. A small brass group from Prospect HS (Chris Barnum-director) was treated to an impromptu group lesson too! AJ Grace, a trumpet student at Daniel Wright JHS-Rodney Owens, director was the winner of an actual private lesson with Joe also on Saturday morning. Joe hails from St. Benedict School in Chicago, so his appearances in our area prompted a reunion with his beginning band director, Mike Teolis (currently at The Latin School) for some recollections of the good times and the good old days too. Joe recalled being recruited as a beginner by George Quinlan, Sr. who serviced the band program led by Ed Stark when Mike was his assistant. Before departing Joe posed for a group photo with our QF-Arlington Heights crew (left to right) Jerome Seiling, Jim Fuller (mgr), Joe Burgstaller, Adam Gorz, Marcus Julian & Beth Foort.

The Northshore Concert Band will be sharing a concert at Niles North HS on May 16 th. This is their final performance of the year and what a wonderful treat to have the NCB join them on stage! Mike Moehlmann directs the bands, and Jennifer Page directs the Orchestra at Niles North! Great job to Jeremy Budrow & Bryan Itzkowitz of Holmes MS in Wheeling, who hosted their 10 th Annual HMS Pops Concert at Chevy Chase Country Club with very special guest artist, John Wojchiechowski. Once again Jim Colombo & Brad Meyer will lead the Hauser JHS band in the 71st annual Lagrange Pet Parade. The parade is traditionally the first weekend after Memorial Day and draws 10,000 spectators. The York HS band under the direction of Bill Riddle & Mike Pavlik participated in the bright-spark masters of music events in performances and clinics at Orchestra Hall. The York orchestra un- der the direction of Ray Ostwald also performed. In addition to playing in this famous space, a professional recording of the performance was provided to each group. Before a recent performance of "Shadow Rituals", Matt Goeke & Matt Kurinsky hosted the composer Michael Markowski for a workshop at Hinsdale Central HS. The thirty year old composer shared his inspirations and visions for the piece as he rehearsed the group before a recent concert. The band and orchestra programs from District 103 Washington MS in Lyons will be participating in the High Note Music Festival in early May at Lake Bluff MS. They will then cap off their day of performing with a fun afternoon at Six Flags Great America! Good luck to all ensembles. Eric Rauch is the director. Amy Church, Director of Bands King Arts and Lincoln Schools reports: One of my eighth grade students, Howard Godfrey, composed, arranged, and conducted his own piece on our King Arts Spring Band Concert, held on April 25th. Howard plays clarinet in Symphonic Band, saxophone in Jazz Band, the cello in orchestra, and also plays the flute in small chamber ensembles. He also sings and plays keyboards in our Rock ON'semble, and has played guitar in the guitar ensemble. I am copying below the introduction we read to the audience just before his piece. "Our next piece will be "Boom Symphony." This piece of music is very special, as it was composed and arranged by eighth grade band student Howard Godfrey. 13 Page 13 Chicago Saxophonist Ken Partyka enjoys a multi-faceted career in the music business, which spans over twenty years. In his unique career, he has amassed an impressive resume as a performer, educator, bandleader and composer/arranger as well as being integrally involved with the retail music industry. Over his career, Ken has performed or recorded with such acclaimed performers as Mel Torme, Arturo Sandoval, Frankie Valli, Ron Hawking, Frank D Rone and Sonia Dada and has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the legendary Red Rock. Ken s Jazz Page Introduced at the 2017 NAMM show, and now available at QF, are the new Select Jazz Tenor Saxophone Mouthpieces from D addario Woodwinds. 100% precision milled from solid rod rubber, these are vintage inspired jazz mouthpieces. They possess a classic sound and response with even intonation throughout the full range of the horn. They come with medium chambers and facing lengths, and are available in tip openings of 6, 7, 8 and 9. Retail on these pieces is $297, but are available through QF for $199! On a personal note, I have played these pieces and they are the real thing. In addition to the attributes listed above, these pieces are also highly versatile and lots of fun to play. Along with the alto piece of the same name, this mouthpiece should be considered for any serious player, from high school to professional looking for something new. As summer fast approaches, the potential for student instruments to go Place your order now for the 2018 ILMEA Jazz Band Selection A Question of Hope by Antonio Garcia Available from QF with your 10% school discount AND FREE DELIVERY by your friendly QF rep!! into hibernation vastly increases. As many wise teachers have said, the most difficult part of practicing can be getting the horn out of the case! Instrument stands are a great way to keep those instruments out of the case and ready to go. Hercules Stands have become our top selling brand for instrument stands, and every QF location now has a fully stocked display of these products. Highly durable and easy to use, Hercules Stands are available for virtually every band instrument, including instruments like bassoon, alto flute and soprano sax. They even make a very solid tablet holder. If you attended the Midwest Clinic in December, you may have stumbled across a product called The Silencer. Developed by Cincinnati based professional trumpet player Matthew Anklan, The Silencer has redefined the practice mute. Designed to fit almost all Harmon mutes currently on the market, this CNC machined product is made in the USA of high quality aluminum, is quiet (-30 to -40db), provides enough feedback to the player to discourage overblowing, does not cause body tension and intonation is not affected. The Silencer retails for $30, but is available at QF for $ It also comes in three colors, red, blue and black. Vandoren has added jazz mix reed cards to their line for both Soprano and Baritone saxophones. These cards offer a convenient way for players to try all four Vandoren jazz I love to play baritone sax, but I hate that old junky one the school owns Cannonball, Accent, Eastman and Anthem Baritone Saxophones now Available on our First Chair Rental/Purchase Plan including Maintenance & Replacement coverage reed cuts and find the reed that suits them best. Cleanwinds purifying spray contains no chemicals or additives resulting in the safest and most natural way to clean your instruments. By using essential oils, Clean Winds Purifying Spray not only aids smooth slides and valve function but also helps to reduce the spread of germs that can accumulate within your instrument. Howard orchestrated 21 different instruments parts in his composition, and also did all of his own transpositions for instruments that play in different keys. He completed his piece through music software and printed out the full score and all twenty one instrument parts. This is an amazing and impressive accomplishment for any composer, let alone one who is still in middle school. Howard will now come forward to conduct the Symphonic Band in the premiere performance of "Boom Symphony." BANDTOOL It s Like a Swiss Army Knife for Band Directors!!
