1 Signal Instruction No. 21 S.E.D. SOUTHERN REGION-SOUTH EASTERN DIVISION Instructions to all concerned as to INTRODUCTION OF COLOUR LIGHT SIGNALS AND NEW SIGNAL BOX AT MAIDSTONE EAST (in place of certain existing semaphore running signals) and ABOLITION OF EXISTING MAIDSTONE EAST SIGNAL BOX On SUNDAY, 8th APRIL, 1962 Rules 77, 78, 79 and 80 to be observed. Drivers to keep a good look-out for hand signals. Commencing at 11.0 p.m. on Saturday, 7th April. 1962, colour light signals will be brought into use in place of certain existing semaphore running signals operated from Barming. Maidstone East and Bearsted signal boxes. A new signal box known as MAIDSTONE EAST will be provided 48 yards Barming side of the existing signal box which will be removed. The facing connection in the existing Down line leading to the existing Loop line and the trailing connection in the existing Up line leading from the existing Loop line, 9 and 7 yards respectively Bearsted side of the new signal box, which are at present clipped and padlocked in the normal position will be connected to and operated from the new signal box. The facing connection in the existing Up line leading to the existing Loop line, 188 yards Bearsted side of the new signal box which is at present clipped and padlocked in the normal position will be connected to and operated from the new signal box. The trap points in the existing Down and Up lines 158 yards and 68 yards respectively station side of the new signal box which are at present clipped and padlocked out of use will be brought into use, the trap connections each leading to a standard type sand drag. The Down, Up and Loop lines will in future be known as Down Main, Up Main and Reversible lines respectively... Drop off" trap points will be provided in the Reversible line as shown on the enclosed diagram. Full details of the altered permanent way and signalling arrangements are shown on the diagram enclosed with this Instruction.
2 A plate bearing the prefix letters and the number of the signal will be fixed beneath each colour light signal. The pre!fix letters will denote the signal box which operates the signal as under: Prefix letters "EBX" Signal box. Maidstone East The new colour light running signals will consist of three or two aspects as shown on the enclosed diagram.. The lights of the new running signals will be arranged as shown on the enclosed diagram. The new colour light running signals will be fitted with small side lights repeating the aspects exhibited by the signals to assist drivers of trains drawn up close to such signals. Back lights will not be provided in any of these new colour light running signals., The height of the centre of the lowest aspect (Red or Yellow) of these new colour light running signals will vary between 10 feet and 17t feet above rail level. The new colour light running signals will be replaced to danger after the front of a train has passed a distance varying from 15 yards to 627 yards beyond the signal. JUNCTION INDICATORS Junction indicators will be provided to work in conjunction with certain signals as shown on the enclosed diagram and will apply as indicated in Rule 35. clause (e). ROUTE INDICATORS Route indicators will be provided to work in conjunction with certain signals and they will exhibit a letter as indicated on the enclosed diagram according to the route the train is intended to run. TELEPHONES Telephones will be provided at or adjacent to certain signals as indicated on the enclosed diagram. Attention is drawn to the instructions headed "Use of Telephone at automatic. intermediate block or other stop signals" on pages 98 and 99 of the South Eastern Division Sectional Appendix. also to clauses I to 3 of the instructions headed "Telephones at Stop Signals" on page 63 of the General Appendix to the Working Time Tables and books of Rules and Regulations and to t~e instructions headed "Lineside Telephones" appearing as an addition to the South Eastern Division Sectional Appendix (page 95) in Special Notice PjEW 48, SED, CD or WS and subsequent issues. SIGNALLING DURING FOG AND FALLING SNOW Fogsignalmen will NOT be provided at any of the new colour light signals referred to in this Signal Instruction. SUBSIDIARY SIGNALS All subsidiary signals controlled from Maidstone East signal box will be of the position light type. SHUNTING SIGNAL 'Shunting signal EBX.14 will be worked for all running movements controlled by EBX.17118, 19,20 signals in addition to shunting movements. Drivers of trains whose movements have been authorised by these signals are not required to observe the position of this shunting signal. It may however happen in an emergency that this shunting signal has been placed at danger by the signalman nd in such circumstances ii this signal is noticed by a driver he should bring his train to a stand. During shunting operations the position of this shunting signal must be strictly observed. DETONATOR PLACING MACHINES Detonator placing machines will be provided as shown on the enclosed diagram each worked by a separate lever in the signal box. Attention is drawn to the instructions applicable to detonator placing machines appearing on page 67 of the General Appendix to the Working Time Table and books of Rules and Regulations. 2
