IoT - Internet of Things Brokerage event for Innovative ICT November, Varazdin, Croatia
IoT Internet of Things What is this? Is it hype or reality? Will it influence our life? Which technology will be included? Which risks have to be handled? Future areas of development and research IoT 2
Definition (one of many) The term "Internet of Things" has come to describe a number of technologies and research disciplines that enable the Internet to reach out into the real world of physical objects. IoT 3
IoT history 1999 Foundation of Auto-ID center of MIT (RFID technology) 2003 SUN articel where IoT is mentioned rce/rfid/ 2005 ITU Internet Reports 2005: The Internet of Things EU initiative - Internet of Things An action plan for Europe: ments/commiot2009.pdf IoT 4
Is it already reality? (1) RFID s in passports Smart metering (connected electric meters) GPS tracking for all cars to calculate usage tax (see Netherlands) IoT 5
Facts IoT (the definition) differs from smart home or smart car initiatives IoT includes the whole outside world Wikipedia: The Internet of objects should encode 50 to 100,000 billion objects and follow the movement of those objects. Every human being is surrounded by 1,000 to 5,000 objects. IoT 6
Rising complexity Identifying things (bar code, RFID, URI ) Address things (IPv6 ) Communicate with things (3G/4G networks, NFC ) Sensors included in things IoT 7
Identification of things Universal addressability approach URI's for everything Bar code RFID technology Intensive research for RFID by the AUTO-ID center of MIT (founded 1999) Meanwhile identification over 100 meter and more A lot of test and research by big companies like SAP and Metro trying to increase productivity in retail and logistics From container to box to item level Field trial already started on item level. Shops where on each item an RFID chip is attached. (for example Metro group) IoT 8
Addressing things IPv4 provides an addressing capability of about 4 billion addresses (2 32 ). IPv6 provides an addressing capability of about 3.4*10 38 addresses (2 128 ). Who will be the master of addresses? Who will issue unique addresses? IoT 9
Communicating with things (1) Wireline or wireless communication 3G/4G networks Massive amount of data/connections/sessions have to be handled NFC Near Field Communication Gateways to the IoT (mobile phones with NFC) It is often a self-configuring wireless network Eventually also P2P systems IoT 10
Communicating with things (2) Secure authorization and authentication Secure communication channels Legal considerations (where is the data stored) Is the citizen still master of all his data? How can he control this? "silence of the chips Remember mobile phones. Connection data is now in the hands of governments. There will be far more data with IoT. IoT 11
Technology (1) For the processing of the data and for the intelligence of the IoT we will need massive parallel computing power Cloud computing (new hype) Billions of event driven communications Man-machine and massive machine-machine communication Nowadays only 1% of the machines are connected IoT 12
Technology (2) Huge storage needed (the cloud as the storage) failure could have massive impact Will be a critical infrastructure High availability Recycling of the things has to be considered IoT 13
Is it already reality? (2) Very strong lobbying and interest of industries Real hype can be found in EU paper (attach RFID to all trees to prevent cutting down) IoT is not present nowadays IoT will still need a lot of time to manifest IoT should increase quality of life Making the Internet of things an Internet of things for people IoT 14
Is it already reality? (3) Usability plays big role (if not accepted then it s doomed to failure ) Reality starts with connected home, car, power meter etc. Intranet of things is reality (SAP, Metro, RFID logistics) IoT 15
Privacy and protection of personal data How, in practice, the EU Commission will watch over the application of data protection legislation to IoT: by consulting, when necessary, the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party; by providing guidance on the correct interpretation of EU legislation; by fostering dialogue among stakeholders; by proposing, if necessary, additional regulatory instruments. IoT 16
What we do for Things? Mobilisis is our solution for mobile data collection, processing and presentation. A wide range of industry standard communication protocols (RS232, RS485, CAN, MODBUS...) We offer the easiest and shortest way of putting your data in real time from your thing to your Internet application. IoT 17
About us DELPRO d.o.o. - Hardware Trending d.o.o. - Software WiM Systems d.o.o. Project managament WeIT Consulting GmbH Consulting IoT 18

Basic tracking module This is the basic tracking module used for installation in all types of vehicles. Device has connector for GPS antenna. Simple installation of device in car, robust aluminum cases are great for wide spectrum of customers. Device is 12 V and 32 V - installation ready. IoT 20
Case study - Ramp control module Communication via Quad Band GSM (SMS, Voice, Data, GPRS, TCP/IP, ) Smart Network Connection (prefering of specified networks) 30 days of offline storage if no connection is available. GPRS/SMS diagnostics Recognition of sabotage Remote administration & firmware update IoT 21
EXPAND Tracking module 4 Digital Inputs (optocoupled 6-30V) GPS antenna input Power supply 5,5-32V 4 pin Molex 4 digital Outputs (5 V) 1 Relay Output COM, NO, NC 1 Analog Input ADC (10 V) 1 Analog Output DAC RS485 Industrial Communication for sensors, fuel meters, card readers etc... GND pin, pin with stabilized power supply output (5V), 12/24 V DCIN pin 3-axial accelerometer (optional) case study in a car IoT 22
Parksys module This is Parksys Module which controls parking sensors, turns on/off led studs, and changes free parking place number on LED displays. Drivers can reserve a parking place using SMS or check number of free parking places. It also uploads in realtime parking status data to web server, where that data is visualized on Google Maps. One device can monitor up to 256 parking places. Guide me to nearest parking place function for navigation device IoT 23
ARM Processor driven spreader control unit EPOS 10 IoT 24
EPOS 10 in action IoT 25
Put more Things together.. IoT 26
Future improvements size (has to become smaller and smaller) mobility (wireless communication and GPS tracking) power consumption (energy harvesting) prize (today RFID tags for 10 cents) IoT 27
Thank you! Krešimir Meštrić try it life with demo, demo account IoT 28
