2 Chamonix: 25 Jan 2011 AB Baseline planning LS 1 LS 2 - from now to 2020 ~60 months of p-p running - 4 weeks of Heavy Ion Collisions every year (8 runs) - Annual year-end shutdown for ~10 weeks - 15 mo shutdown in 2012/2013 -> LHC to nominal energy - 15 mo shutdown in > Phase 1 upgrade mo shutdown in 2020(+x) -> HL-LHC upgrade LS 3

3 Shutdowns & year-end Tech Stops Chamonix: 25 Jan 2011 AB For each experiment, activities form part of a cunning coherent plan covering extended technical stops & shutdowns (LS 1, LS 2) over the next 6-7 years and beyond to LS 3 in 2020+x, in tune with the developing performance of LHC. Detailed objectives for each tech stop/shutdown period are interdependent and will evolve progressively depending on -the timing & duration of future stops/shutdowns -the achievements in past stops/shutdowns -the physics achievements (potential) for past (future) operation periods Postponing the shutdown (LS 1) to , will, in most cases: -delay the whole LS 1 task-list by one year. -allow some tasks scheduled for LS 2 to be pre-empted -tend to put pressure for more maintenance and repair tasks (& even upgrade tasks) during year-end stop Once the schedule is confirmed, further evolution is likely

4 Chamonix: 25 Jan 2011 AB Year-end Technical Stops The experience of and shows that all 4 experiments can successfully complete complex interventions requiring partial opening in a year-end Technical Stop of ~10-12 weeks, with work spanning the CERN closure if necessary. Activities have already included : consolidation & first installation/upgrade : emergency repair and routine maintenance. The year-end Tech stops are an important ingredient in the overall consolidation and upgrade plan as well as being essential for maintenance and repair. (support from technical groups in BE,EN,GS,PH,TE is a pre-requisite for success) So far experiment work stayed ~ within the shadow of LHC work. --> may not always be possible Substantial routine work and consolidation also gets done in the regular (few day) Technical Stops during the running periods. Frequency and duration could be tuned. (but let s avoid drive it til it breaks down?)

Stop EMCAL 2010/2011 ALICE Status TRD 2011/ TRD 2010/2011 TB P2 issues, Xmas shutdown plans ALICE: partial opening to install 3 TRD supermodules 6 EMCAL supermodules LHCb: Removal of both RICH1 HPD boxes, exchange of electronics and HPDs followed by their re-installation in January 2011.

7 25 Jan 2011 AB CMS/TOTEM: & Ext Tech Stops -z end: Locating T1 frame on guides -z end: First T1 in place Bushings repair z end: insertion by halves, then together

8 First long shutdown: ALICE 25 Jan 2011 AB Full opening of the detector --> moving TPC to parking position and accessing Silicon Tracker --> repair and consolidation of Tracker, specifically the Silicon Pixel cooling system. --> installation of EMCAL extension (upgrade) consisting of 6 super-modules. --> new support structures including new support cradle for Photon Spectrometer. Moving TPC to parking position for Silicon Tracker maintenance. EMCAL extension (DCAL) 6 supermodules due to be ready for 2012

9 First long shutdown: ATLAS Full opening -Beampipe: - replace steel beam pipes, flanges and ion pumps with aluminum ones, (factor 3 gain in activation/induced backgrounds). - R&D done, production started 25 Jan 2011 AB - Pixel detector SQP project - extract pixel and bring to surface, replace all services and optical transmitters, then reinstall (anticipates faults possible from 2015 onward due to failing optical transmitters inside detector) -precautionary preparations already underway (new SQP project). - decision to extract or not during This is a major operation! Pixel IBL=Insertable B Layer. --> improve vertexing and b-tagging capabilities at nominal luminosity and beyond. -first approved ATLAS upgrade project, now under construction, originally targeting ATLAS is discussing accelerating construction to be ready to install in ( for LS 1) --> profit from detector being on surface for SQP. - requires new Be central beam pipe with smaller diameter (45 mm).

10 First long shutdown: ATLAS 25 Jan 2011 AB -Inner detector: -install new C3F8 ID evaporative cooling plant based on passive syphon concept. -R&D done, now in the procurement phase. -keep existing plant (based on compressors) as a spare -Calorimeters (LAr and Tiles) -replace all LV power suppliers (on-detector DC-DC converters) with a new generation of devices. -R&D done, production ongoing. First production batch under qualification -Muon detector -Complete installation of the EE chambers (better coverage of transition region between barrel and toroid end-caps). -Instrument existing trigger chambers in the toroid feed region, to improve geometrical acceptance -Improve radiation shielding inside the detector (forward region) and between caverns -Fix faults where needed and where access allows -Do the yearly maintenance of the infrastructure and safety systems -Infrastructure consolidation where necessary

12 First long shutdown: CMS 25 Jan 2011 AB Timeframe Est Integ Tasks lumi /fb Yoke Endcap disk 4 construction at +z and z ends in situ. 4 th muon endcap stations +z and z (CSC & RPC) (-z only if 2012) 1 st endcap muon station readout granularity restoration +z and Beampipe region shielding + forward region opening under vacuum -forward systems CASTOR, ZDC, (TOTEM?) removable for p-p. (Reinstallable for ion-ion or special runs.) HF phototube replacement +z and z HO & CASTOR calorimeter phototransducer change Pixel Luminosity Telescope (PLT) installed (if not in ) Beam Scintillation Counter upgrade/replacement. Barrel endcap seal revision for colder Tracker operations + very many infra & common systems consolidations. currently no provision for bakeout ( ~2 months more needed) After which CMS should be ready for TeV, 50fb -1 and 2+ x cm -2 s -1

15 First long shutdown: LHCb 25 Jan 2011 AB Beam Pipe: Exchange of the largest Be section (3rd ~6000mm), this requires moving out the fourth section as well. Replacements for machined aluminium bellows between Sections 1 & 2 and between Sections 2 & 3 based on formed bellows technology Replacement of spider-web fix point supports for further transparency. (Support from TE/VSC, BE/ABP) Inner Silicon Tracker: Replacement of one or more detector modules with scintillating fiber technology (as part of the upgrade project) Requires: Survey of the sub detector Vertex Locator: Depending on the accumulated radiation dose, exchange of both VeLo halves, including the RF boxes.

16 --> possible impact on LHC tunnel planning First long shutdown: TOTEM 25 Jan 2011 AB Maintenance options on T1 & T2 telescopes (integrated in CMS) (Teams: TOTEM+CMS+PH-DT) T1: Two detector elements in each CMS end cone (+/- side) Service requirements : CMS HF on two risers Service option : extraction of T1 quarter, electronics, cooling T1 T2:Two detector elements on each side of CMS Service requirement : HF on two risers Service option : exchange of GEM planes, electronics,cooling --> impact on CMS opening & closing sequence & timescales. T2 HF Maintenance of Roman Pots (integrated in LHC) : 24 Roman Pots (6 RPs at -147m, 6 RPs at +147m, 6 RPs at -220 m, 6 RPs at +220 m) Service requirements : LHC Tunnel access Service option : dismount single RP detector (sensor + electronics) motor control & calibration, cooling & vacuum, FESA, PXI, interlock CMS forward region

17 Infrastructure: All experiments require very substantial consolidation of : shielding, ventilation, cryogenics, cooling, inertion & dry air, RP measures, safety systems, beam diagnostics etc, between now and end of LS 1, to maintain the performance of 2010, matching that expected from LHC. Chamonix: 25 Jan 2011 AB Points to watch Beampipes: Change of schedule may lead to more overlap between experiments in both construction and installation of improved beampipes. eg ATLAS, LHCb & possibly CMS all changing Be pipes in 2013? -need to continuously monitor NEG effectiveness and predict saturation. -bakeout is complex and will require extra time in shutdown scheduling (especially CMS, 4 months + forced pixel removal, replacement, recalibration --> present CMS plan has first bakeout opportunity in Long Shutdown 2) Survey: Despite contributing substantially to their own survey effort, each experiment needs a minimum of one staff surveyor to oversee the survey programme, make sure survey is carried out coherently throughout CERN and ultimately to take responsibility for survey work of complex-wide criticality.

18 Chamonix: 25 Jan 2011 AB Future year-end Technical Stops The story so far for and : (italics = tentative) ALICE ATLAS CMS LHCb Install 8 TRD supermodules Install EE muon stations in transition region Install ZDC crane. Revise heavy moving system Exchange EMT302/8X transformer. Revise cranes. Maintain fwd pixel and install PLT. Revise dipole cooling. Install cryo backup Install 45mm central beampipe. --> Annual infrastructure & safety maintenance and consolidation needed every time! --> Decision about major works and time required in preceding September

19 What about the 2 nd Long Shutdown? Chamonix: 25 Jan 2011 AB Programme likely to be strongly affected by a decision to postpone 1 st Long Shutdown Recall 2016 was a good compromise between different interests requesting 2015 & LS 2 start date and duration to be re-considered based on: - Physics: achieved pre LS 1, and targeted between LS1 and LS2 - Actual start/duration of LS 1: eg Nov 2012-Feb 2014 or Dec 2012-June 2014? (Presumably not sensible to have < 2 full running years between LS1 and LS 2) - Status/capabilities of LHC & Experiments on completion of LS1 & pre LS2 - Credible ready date of various upgrades wrt shutdown timing. - Performance consolidation/improvement/risk reduction expected from LS 2. Change brings stress but also provokes the imagination! (i) CMS is considering ways to avoid delays to (already delayed) work on: - HCAL consolidation (HPD replacement & depth segmentation), ready Installing low-mass 4-layer pixel tracker, (also ready 2015) on 45mm beampipe. --> possible upgrade of beampipe in 2013, pixel in later tech stop (3mo min) (ii) ATLAS considering pre-emptive completion of : IBL project in LS1. HL-LHC pix & cal upgrades in LS2

Si tracker upgrade If not done in LS 1: IBL upgrade (45mm bp) Fast Tracking Trigger If not done in LS 1 / ETS 45mm beampipe Pixel upgrade Major tracking upgrade Pixel VeLo (FTK) L 1 trigger upgrade Fwd small muon chs MDT trigger (Low mass 4 layer) Fix HCAL vulnerability. Replace photo-transducer and segment in depth. New Tracker to cope with higher luminosity Anticipate upgrades Forward cals Extended PID Muon system Readout & processors Shielding upgrade DAQ & HLT revision Infrastructure overhaul RP shielding & procedures Anticipate HL-LHC: Pixel, warm fwd cal. Seals for Tracker cold operation. Upgrade beam monitors. Upgrade barrel muon FE. Level 1 trigger upgrade DAQ & HLT revision RP Shielding & procedures Prepare whole detector for 40 MHz Subsystem electronics, trigger, DAQ

21 Chamonix: 25 Jan 2011 AB Conclusion First Long Shutdown (LS 1: baseline ) Intensive programme of maintenance, consolidation & upgrade work planned. Part of an interdependent and coherent set of objectives for 3 Long Shutdowns and the intervening year-end Technical Stops. Activity overlap and possible resource conflicts identified for: -beampipe construction and replacement -survey -infrastructure modifications Delaying to will: postpone most of task list by 1 year without serious consequence, but exceptions will put more pressure on year-end stop. Possible feed-forward of delay to LS 2 (baseline ) will likely feedback more tasks to LS 1 and the intervening year-end Technical Stops.
