5 Introduction Welcome to Dialed in Motion Running Welcome to Dialed in Motion, powered by siliconcoach. Siliconcoach has a proud history of creating dynamic software to assist people in their everyday endeavour for success. Dialed in Motion is just that, a complete software package that will enable your store to give great advice ensuring you develop customers for life. The team at siliconcoach has spent many hours developing a software platform for retail gait analysis, so you can be assured that with correct use of the valuable tools within Dialed in Motion you will see an effect on your bottom-line. Dialed in Motion has many great features such as the ability to collect all your customers details, easy to use drawing tools and the ability to save, or print all the information gathered during the sales process. The power is there, the choice is yours on how to use it. Using this manual This manual has been designed to step you through the main features of the software. In the Appendix you will also find more advanced procedures. The manual has several typesetting conventions. Bold text means it is a button or pull-down menu indicates a HINT. These hints will show you small pointers that will speed up the process for you. Tabs in the software refer to the navigation tabs on the left side of the application. Something in italics means it s a key word or point. The Importance of training It is important to realise that while a lot of experience and thought has gone into the design of this application it is still a tool and it can be used incorrectly. The effect of this can be that incorrect shoe advice is given to unsuspecting customers. It is important that the retailer has proper training in place for all users of this software. This does not just mean how to use the software but how to use the software to fit shoes correctly. Introduction 1

6 Software Installation Client and server installation Choose the Client and Server installation option if you Have only a single PC and treadmill and wish to store customer and visit data. Or You are intending to setup other PCs and you wish to use the current PC as a Client and a Server. This is the one 95% of stores will use. Step 1: Run the installer. Step 2: Read and accept the terms and conditions, then click Next Step 4: When the application finishes installing and this screen appears click Next 2 Software Installation

7 Step 5: Installation will complete. Click Finish to continue. Run the application from the desktop Icon For security reasons you must register the application before you can use it. See the product activation section on page 4 for more details. Software Installation 3

8 Introduction Just as many retailers now use special tags to prevent shoplifting, the bike fitting software is protected so that it cannot be stolen. The software will run in a 30-day evaluation mode until such time as you Activate it using the and first and last names you provide to Siliconcoach on payment. You must be connected to the internet to Register and Activate but not after that. However, it is strongly recommended you keep your computer connected for updates, support and sending reports via . There is a 2 stage process, namely Registering and Activating. Registering requires you to enter in your first and last name and also a valid . It is critical that this is a valid as you will be asked to supply it to Siliconcoach and it will then be used as your software release code. Now you will have access to the 30 day trial. NOTE: You cannot change the . Activating is required before the trial period ends otherwise your software will stop working. As long as you have sent Siliconcoach your payment, your first and last name and a valid and they have accepted it, then you just need to press the Activate button, it will check your authorization on our web server and then if it is released, your software is ready to use. Activating and Registering the Software Use the following steps to either: 1. Register the software 2. Activate the software. NOTE: To deactivate the software contact support@siliconcoach.com Step 1 Registering Make sure you are connected to the Internet (test by going to ). You must enter your first and last name and also a valid . Press the NEXT button to register NOTE: It is critical that this is a valid as you will be asked to supply it to Siliconcoach and it will then be used as your software release code. Now you will have access to the 30 day trial. You cannot change the . The first time you run the bike fitting software after registering on a computer it will be in Trial mode. This will give you 30 days of fully functioning software before it must be activated. 4 Software Installation

9 Step 2 Activating Eventually you will have no days left on your trial so you now need to Activate the software before you can continue to use it. As long as you have sent Siliconcoach your payment, your first and last name and a valid , and they have accepted it, then you just need to press the Activate button. The software will check your authorization on our web server and if it is cleared your software will be ready to use. Frequently Asked Questions about your License What happens if sell my PC without first returning my license to Siliconcoach? If you fail to return your license to Siliconcoach so you can use it again on another PC then you will need to purchase a new license. Contact support@siluiconcoch.com before selling your computer What happens if my PC is stolen? The expectation is that your insurance will cover the replacement cost and you will purchase the software again. Upon notification of loss, we will block your old activation and issue a new one when you purchase again. What happens if my Hard Drive crashes? In the case that your hard drive cannot be recovered by simple reformatting and the disk has to be replaced then you will need to provide Siliconcoach with proof of purchase for the replacement drive and we reserve the right to ask you to run diagnostic software on the PC to confirm that the drive matches that as specified in the receipt Software Installation 5

10 Setting up the Space The camera is one of the key components of the system and as such setting up the camera is very important. If you capture rubbish video there is very little the software can do to improve it so you are left with an unclear or distorted image that will greatly decrease your accuracy. NOTE: You should also see the Hardware, How do I get better video and Installing the AV to USB Converter links at the Dialed in Motion Support Centre of Space requirements Treadmill escape route Privacy/Promotion Power Computer position Computer screen position Your basic components are the treadmill, the computer, the camera(s) and space. In its simplest form this would be about 4.5 m x 4.5 m (200 x 200 ). However, shop owners have creatively reduced this space by using fold away treadmills, mounting the camera across the room and filling any empty space with product and promotional material. Please contact siliconcoach if you would like more information on their retail design services. The usual escape procedure for a treadmill is for the customer to put their hands on the safety rails and step to the side of the moving belt. However, there must also be a safe area behind the treadmill in case they cannot keep up with the belt speed, miss the handrails and are thrown off the back of the treadmill. This area should be free of obstacles. This gait analysis system will attract a great deal of interest in your store and is an excellent sales promotion tool; however you must balance this with the privacy of the customer. Make sure they feel comfortable not only running on a treadmill and being filmed, but also with the amount of privacy you provide. You will need power to the treadmill and computer but also remember the camera(s) also need power and could be 2-5 m away from your computer and power box. You must be careful running power cables across an area where customers are going to walk. The best option is to get your electrician to wire in power plugs exactly where you need them. Make sure you have your layout design finalised before you do this. The position of your computer will depend on if it is a laptop or a desktop system. A desktop box can be securely hidden away under a bench but you will still need space for the screen, keyboard and mouse. A laptop system can be positioned on top of the bench/table and does not need extra screen or keyboard space. Although you can operate a laptop without an external mouse by using the touchpad, we highly recommend a proper mouse for video analysis as it makes it much easier to use the drawing and measuring tools. Laptops need to be secured to a fixed object as they do get stolen. The computer screen position is very important as it is not only used for your analysis but also to convey your results and thoughts to the customer. It is very important they have a clear view of the screen. Your screen may be part of the laptop or in the case of a desktop it would be a separate unit. You may even 6 Setting up the Space

11 opt for a laptop with an external monitor. Keyboard and mouse position Cables Workspace Type of camera The keyboard and mouse position needs to be within easy access as you will be using them a lot, especially the mouse. The system is designed to minimise keyboard use but you will still need to type in the customer information at the beginning of the session and at other times when you many need to type extra comments. Cables can be dangerous and make the workspace look disorganised and this creates an impression of lack of precision. Where possible, cables should be wired into fixed structures by an electrician. Where this is not possible they should be secured and covered with a rubber mat or something similar. You will need power cables and long video cables (these connect the camera to the computer). These video cables are not included with the software so you may need to contact siliconcoach for more information on how to purchase these extra-long cables or search for them yourself on the internet. It is very important to present a professional workspace at all times. It conveys to the customer that this is a high precision work place and it will increase their confidence in your recommendations. Keep all paper material to a minimum, do not put shoe boxes or shoes on the bench near the screen, keep cables hidden away, and keep the space clean and tidy. The design of the whole fitting area has a critical role in creating a feeling of confidence in your ability to correctly prescribe shoes. Colours, lighting, pictures, stock etc, properly positioned, all play a role in creating this atmosphere and a positive retail experience for the customer. Many different types of cameras have emerged in the last few years. This system is designed for High Definition input via HDMI and the older Standard Definition video via an AV to USB converter. Note: You should see the Correct Hardware and Getting better video links at the Dialed in Motion Support Centre at Camera Orientation One of the unique features of Dialed in Motion Running is the ability to rotate the camera 90 degrees so it better aligns with the tall narrow form of a runnier. It means you can get the camera closer and get more of the runner in at the same time. The software expects the camera to be rotated 90 degrees on its Setting up the Space 7

12 side therefore you must set your camera up as such. If you image it totally upside down you can either rotate your camera or change the camera settings (see page 31), Distance from treadmill The distance the camera is away from the customer depends on how much of the person you want to see. As a rule of thumb if you want to see the whole person you will need the lens of the camera to be about 3 metres (120 ) from the customer. To see from the waist down you will need about m (60 80 ). If you re doing Dual Video Capture then you need to consider the placement of the second camera. The options are: Side on to the treadmill (i.e. perpendicular to the Back Camera). Note that a side on camera should be in a standard landscape orientation (i.e. NOT rotated). Front on to the treadmill Remember your overall area will need to be greater than this to allow for camera mounting and treadmill width. Level and at right angles This software is designed to get the most out of your camera screen size and therefore needs to be turned 90 degrees to the normal flat position. This will put the camera and its image on its side but the software will turn the image 90 or 270 degrees to make it level again (see page 31 for setup options). However, the camera must still be level in all planes because the software assumes that you have set up your camera correctly. When you use the drawing tool to draw a horizontal line it assumes the background is also horizontal. You could quite happily make measurements and draw reference lines in the screen, but if the image in the background is not correctly aligned with the camera you will be wrong in your conclusions. The camera must be: Level side to side Level forward to back At right angles to the plane of movement Right angles to the plane of movement means either directly out to the side in line with the runner, directly behind, directly in front or directly overhead. For gait analysis the common views are directly from the side or directly from behind. This applies for the Side or Front camera as well if you re doing Dual Video Capture. Mounting/Security Height Experience has told us that it is very important to securely mount your camera(s). The first reason is that they will not get knocked out of line as easily and the second is that it dramatically reduces the number of cameras stolen out of stores. The camera(s) should be at approximately half the height of the subject of interest. If you are looking at the whole body the camera should be set at about the height of the hips. If you are looking at the lower limbs the camera should be about knee 8 Setting up the Space

13 height. The camera should also line up with the centre of the treadmill. Camera settings Modern cameras are very good at automatically adjusting to different light conditions but there are a few of things you can do to improve on that even more. As the default camera settings are out of our control, you must set these as outlined in the How do I get better video link at the Dialed in Motion Support Centre of Background Lighting It is important that the background the camera sees is as neutral as possible; do not use anything reflective such as glass. A plain grey, blue or green background is best, try to avoid black or white as they create a lot of contrast and may make your image too dark or too light. Also try to avoid a lot of lettering or pictures in the background, it will cause confusion and make it harder to find the key points on your customers legs. Lighting is a critical and often overlooked part of your setup. The quality of the light greatly influences the quality of your image. The software cannot compensate for bad video. A blurred image is usually the result of incorrect camera settings, bad lighting, or both. 14 Safety Hand rails Escape route Explanation Familiarisation Safely cord Vigilance Safety relates to the use of the treadmill. Even people with good balance and mobility can find walking or running on a treadmill an unnerving experience. A signed non-liability document may be needed in some countries. Handrails come standard on virtually all commercial running treadmills and should not be removed. They are the first safety feature to be used in an emergency and are also very useful for mounting and dismounting the treadmill. The usual escape procedure for a treadmill is for the customer to put their hands on the safety rails and step to the side of the moving belt. However, there must also be a safe area behind the treadmill in case they cannot keep up with the belt speed, miss the handrails and are thrown off the back of the treadmill. This area should be free of obstacles. It is important to explain to the customer what is going to happen and ask them if they have ever been on a treadmill before and then how often and how fast. The response to these questions will guide you to how much instruction they will need. One of the common errors people make when using a treadmill for the first time is they are always looking down at their feet, initially this is alright but you do need to eventually get them running comfortably and naturally by looking further forward. Running on a treadmill is not exactly the same as running on a stationary surface such as the road. The greater the amount of time a customer spends running the more relaxed they will feel and the closer their treadmill gait will represent their road running gait (see page 30 for a discussion of treadmill running versus road running). Some treadmills come with a safety quick stop cord that attaches to the runner and rapidly stops the treadmill if the runner drops too far back and pulls the stop-plug out of its socket. If the treadmill manufacturer recommends the use of this safety cord then it should be used. It is most important for the retailer using the system to use common scene and be vigilant, they should make sure the surroundings are safe, no other customers are in a dangerous position and that the customer feels in control of their situation. 10 Setting up the Space

15 Using the Software Home Screen The Home screen is designed to get you started quickly and also to scroll through the images in a special folder. The means the system can be advertising for you even while it is not being used. You can load your own images for playback. To do this right mouse click on the image and choose OPTIONS then FRONT PAGE from the tabs. Then Browse to the folder and put your.jpg images in there. About 900 x 700 is a good size. Step 1: Choose Customer if you want to add a new customer or choose an existing one from your database. Choose Anonymous if you want to do a quick analysis with no customer information or videos saved. Using the Software 11

16 New Customer The first step in the shoe fitting process relates to the customer s details. Here you can search for a previous customer, create a new customer or proceed without any customer details at all. It is important to get this part right so as to entice them to come back in again, much like the doctors records in a medical clinic. You can finish the analysis at any time by pressing the Finish button in the bottom left of the screen. You will be asked it you want to save this customer s record. If you see Consultant instead of Customer on the tab, the Customer Database option must have been turned off in the Program flow options (see Configuring program flow on page Error! Bookmark not defined. of the Appendix). 12 Using the Software

17 If you click the red Dialed in Motion logo in the upper left corner you will see the toolbar appear. On the toolbar you will find the Admin pull-down menu, the Tools pull-down menu and the About pull-down menu. To learn how to use the options in this menu see the Appendix section at the end of this document. Step 2: Select your name from the Consultant pull down list. If your name does not appear in the pull-down list then Right click on the white space and a new window will open that will allow you to add and delete consultants names. Step 3: If you are adding a NEW customer press the Add Customer button and fill in the details in the window that opens up. Make sure you add the details correctly as they will be stored in the database for future reference. Press the Accept button when you are finished. You now have the opportunity to enter more information in the main screen such as surface, distance, shoe size and orthotic and injury notes if you want. If you do not want to enter this customer s information you can bypass all these details by pressing the Anonymous button. The word Anonymous and the date are inserted as the customer s details. However, if you do this you will not be able to search for this person s record at a later date. Using the Software 13

18 Step 4: If you are working with a customer returning to the Dialed in Motion Dynamic Shoe Fitting System, you need to search for them in the database. To do this, type any details you know about them in the boxes (eg first name, surname, , etc). It is often better not to fill in all the spaces as one mistake may cause you to miss your customer s record. Now press the Search button and a new window will appear with the search results, select the correct one to proceed. If their name does not appear, confirm they had a shoe fitting done on this system and then try pressing the New Search button to clear the screen. Try entering other search words (eg. the first half of their surname, some of their , etc). If you leave ALL the spaces blank it will show you the whole database in alphabetical order so you can scroll through the entire list to find the name you are looking for. Select the one you want then press the Accept button. 14 Using the Software

19 Step 5: If you have found your customer in the database, their previous visits will be presented at the bottom of the screen. To review any Report, double click anywhere on its line. A new window will open and show you the reports and videos associated with that visit. Press the View Report button to see their report(s), from here you could print or the report. You can also press the Save video button to save their video clip(s) to another area on your computer, USB Flash memory drive or it to them using normal Windows software. Step 6: If you want to start a New Search then press the New Search button to clear all the current search words and then enter in your new search words. Step 7: The Delete Customer button will delete the customer details from the database; make sure this is actually what you want to do! Using the Software 15

20 Capture You now need something to analyse. Dialed in Motion video analysis software gives you the ability to capture fast movements and then freeze them for analysis. You can work with up to four (4) video clips at one time. Step 1: Once you have entered information in the Customer section above (even if it is Anonymous ), the Capture link becomes highlighted. Click on this link to move to the Capture section. You should see a video feed from the camera on the right side of the screen. If you do not see this, refer to the Troubleshooting section (page 54) and the Camera section of the setup instructions on page 6). Step 2: Choose your camera layout. Step 3: 16 Using the Software

21 The first available space is selected for you automatically. You have 4 spaces to capture video clips of the customer running barefoot, in their old shoes or in new shoes. These spaces are called Shoe A, Shoe B, Shoe C and Shoe D and will be selected for you in order. If a shoe is not in the shoe list you can simply type the details directly into the appropriate fields on the capture form. Step 4: Make sure the camera is set up correctly (see page the Camera section of the setup instructions on page 6) the customer is running comfortably and safely (see page 10). Select the Brand and Model from the pull-down menus (you can select or change this after capture as well). Press the Capture button and the red indicator light will glow. You can either press the same button (now showing Stop) to stop the capture or wait for the software to stop automatically after the maximum capture time is reached. You can set the maximum capture time from between 1 to 10 seconds; the factory default is 4 seconds. To set the capture time limit go to Tools then Camera Options from the top menu (see Camera Options on page 31 for more details). Step 5: Using the Software 17

22 When the software has finished capturing your video clip, the next space (called Shoe B, C or D) will become highlighted and allow you to select the Brand and Model from the pulldown menus. The Category will be filled automatically and cannot be changed on this screen. To learn how to edit the Brand, Model and Category go to Editing the Shoe Inventory on page 35. Step 6: Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for each new scenario. These scenarios may include barefoot, old shoe, or new shoe. You can set which video clip is the baseline clip by clicking the Baseline radio button. Some retailers choose to use the barefoot clip as the baseline, others use an old shoe and others use a neutral shoe. All have their merits and you need to develop a store policy in consultation with experts in the area. 18 Using the Software

23 Analyse In this section you will learn how to step through the video clips frame by frame and analyse the key ones. What you analyse and how you analyse should be set as store policy in consultation with experts in the area. What you focus on, measure and analyse in each phase of the running cycle depends on your training, expertise and store policy. It is highly recommended that staff be given expert training and a store policy be implemented. These should be based on expert advice in the area of shoe fitting and running biomechanics. For more advice in this area please contact siliconcoach. Step 1: Once you have captured at least one video clip, the other tabs will be highlighted. Click the Analyse link to move to the Analyse section. If you do not see the Analyse link at all, please see Configuring Work Flow on page Error! Bookmark not defined. of the Appendix. 24 Step 2: The first thing to you need to do is to orientate yourself to the Analyse screen. The analysis tools are on the upper left, the video is in the centre with its controller directly underneath. There is also a space to add notes and you can just click to give the shoe a star rating (lower right). You can also select which of your video clips from the Capture section you want to analyse by clicking the Current Shoe buttons in the lower left. Around the main video image are 6 boxes that represent Foot Contact, Mid Stance and Toe Off for the left foot and similarly for the right. For details on each of the tools see Analysis Tools on page 27 of the Appendix. Step 3: Use the video controller to move the video clip through to the point of Left Foot Contact. Use the analysis tools to perform your analysis at this point in the cycle. Press the green + button above the Foot Contact box to save that analysis for your final report. If you make a mistake you can write over your image with a new one by pressing the green + button again. You can clear the box by clicking the red x button. Step 4: Use the video controller to move the video clip through to the point of Left Mid Stance. Use the analysis tools to perform your analysis at this point in the cycle. Press the green + button above the Mid Stance box to save that analysis for your final report. See page 27 for more information on the Analysis Tools themselves. You can add notes for this shoe at the bottom of the page that will follow this shoe right through the Analyse and Compare sections to the Report section. If you Right Click in the notes box you will get options to add, delete and use sentences or phrases from a pull-down menu. This can save you typing common information over and over again. For more detailed instructions see page 40. Step 5: Use the video controller to move the video clip through to the point of Left Toe Off. Use the analysis tools to perform your analysis at this point in the cycle. Press the green + button above the Toe Off box to save that analysis for your final report. Step 6: Repeat Steps 3 to 5 using the right foot. 20 Using the Software

25 Step 7: Move to the next video clip by pressing the Current Shoe buttons on the lower left of the screen. Step 8: Repeat Steps 3 to 7 until all the video clips have been analysed. You can move freely between the Analyse, Compare and Report sections at any time. This allows you to go straight to a selected shoe or redo an analysis. Using the Software 21

26 Compare This is the section you have been working toward. In this section you will learn how to do side by side comparisons of the different shoes. There are really two parts to the Compare section. The first part is where you can compare the still images you created in the Analyse section. The second part is where you can compare 2 video clips side by side, synchronise them, draw on them and take measurements from them. Step 1: The first step is to orientate yourself with the Compare screen. The set of stills you created for each shoe in the Analyse section is presented as thumbnails along the top of the screen just under their Star Ratings. Each shoe has two sets of stills, one representing the complete left foot analysis and the other the right. The side by side preview areas take up most of the central screen with a place for you to type notes along the bottom. You can change the Star Rating and add Notes to each shoe at any time in the Analyse and Compare sections. You can add notes for this shoe at the bottom of the page that will follow this shoe right through the Analyse and Compare sections to the Report section. If you Right Click in the notes box you will get options to add, delete and use sentences or phrases from a pull-down menu. This can save you typing common information over and over again. For more detailed instructions see page Using the Software

27 Step 2: Comparing Stills You have a lot of flexibility in the Compare section. You can compare the results of your analysis of one foot/shoe with any other. For example you could compare the left foot of Shoe A with the left foot of Shoe B, C, or D and similarly for the right side. To do this, select your first shoe (either left or right side), Drag and Drop its thumbnail onto the left viewing space. Now select your second shoe, Drag and Drop its thumbnail onto the right viewing space. Use the tabs to move between Foot Contact, Mid Stance and Toe Off. A description of that shoe will appear on the screen to remind you what it is. A green tick will appear on the tabs to indicate that you have two images loaded and that they are not the same. A red exclamation mark means you have loaded the same shoe and foot in both viewing areas. No indicator means there are no images. Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for each comparison of foot and shoe that interests you and/or the customer. Using the Software 23

28 Step 4: Comparing Video Clips When you click the Dual Video tab the images for each shoe change from thumbnails of the shoes to an image of a roll of video tape. Drag and Drop the roll of video tape that represents the shoe of interest into one of the display areas. The video clips will then load into those display areas and are ready for analysis using the familiar tools on the left side of the screen. If you can t use or see the Dual Video tab you need to check two things. Firstly you need two video clips before the tab will become active. If you can t see the tab at all please see Configuring Program flow on page 44 of the Appendix. Step 5: If you press the blue Play button at the bottom of the screen you will notice the two clips play together, but are not synchronised. You need to manually synchronise them. To synchronise two video clips: 1. Use the video controller (slider) to move through the videos to a key point on the left video clip (eg left foot contact). 2. Press the grey Synch button (it will turn blue to indicate it is active). 3. Again use the video controller to move through the video (only the right clip will now move) to a key point on the right video (eg left foot contact). Do not use the blue Play button to move through the video when synchronising, just use the slide control or the arrow keys on your keyboard. 4. Press the blue Synch button again (it will turn grey to indicate it is now inactive). 5. When you play the video clips they will now be in synch. There are 3 ways of navigating through the video clip(s). You can use the mouse to move the slider on the screen, you can use the left or right arrow keys on your keyboard or you can use the roller on your mouse (if fitted). NOTE: if your roller or arrow keys do not seem to be working you may have to click the mouse on the slider to activate it, then these options should be available to you. Step 6: Use the analysis tools the same way you did in the Analyse section, however you cannot save these images. Step 7: Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for each shoe comparison you and/or the customer are interested in. 24 Using the Software

29 Report The Report tab gives you access to the results for this session. In this section you will be able to view the automatically generated Reports for all the conditions (Shoes or barefoot, maximum of 4), review the Star Rating for each shoe and review any notes you made during the session. While you are viewing the reports you will be able to view, print or them to your customer. Step 1: The first step is to orientate yourself to the Report Screen. You will always see four (4) report boxes, one to represent each condition (shoe or barefoot). You can tell which ones have content in them because there will be a thumbnail of your first image in the upper left. The Notes section contains the notes you added along the analysis process. You cannot edit the Notes or the Star Rating in the Report section but you can go back to the Analyse or Compare sections to do this. You can move freely between highlighted sections using the tabs on the left of the screen. However, you cannot move to Capture Analyse, Compare or Report if you have not specified a customer or clicked Anonymous (see New Customer on page 12). Also you cannot move to Analyse, Compare or Report if you have not captured a video clip (see Capture on page 16). Using the Software 25

30 Step 2:. To view a Report you must first tick the Purchased checkbox to activate the View button. Step 3: A new Report window will open (Adobe PDF Viewer) where you can use the slider and the controls at the bottom right of the window to change the zoom on the report. Step 4: ing: You need an internet connection and an application (not a web one like Gmail, hotmail etc) to use the feature. In the window that opens up add the customers and send as normal. 26 Using the Software

31 Appendix Analysis tools The Analysis tools are found by clicking the Analysis tab, remember you will only have access to the Analysis tab when you have a video clip to analyse. These tools allow you to draw key lines and make key measurements when you are analysing the foot s motion. Note, all press and release instructions refer to the left mouse button. Normal angle: The Normal Angle tool requires three (3) mouse clicks to create the angle. Press and release the mouse button on your first point, then the centre of the angle, then the last point. Horizontal Angle: The Horizontal Angle tool requires two (2) mouse clicks to create the angle relative to an automatically created horizontal line. Press and release the mouse button on the centre of the angle and then move your mouse to your final point and click once more to finish. Vertical Angle: The Vertical Angle tool requires two (2) mouse clicks to create the angle relative to an automatically created vertical line. Press and release the mouse button on the centre of the angle and then move your mouse to your final point and click once more to finish. Line: Press and release the mouse button once on the starting point of your straight line, move the mouse to where you want the line to end and press and release the mouse button again to finish the line. Horizontal line: Press and release the mouse button once on the starting point of your straight line, move the mouse to where you want the line to end and press and release the mouse button again to finish the line. Notice that the line is constrained to horizontal movements only. Vertical Line: Press and release the mouse button once on the starting point of your straight line, move the mouse to where you want the line to end and press and release the mouse button again to finish the line. Notice that the line is constrained to vertical movements only. Arrow: Press and release the mouse button once on the starting point of your arrow, move the mouse to where you want the arrow to end and press and release the mouse button again to finish the arrow. Circle: Press and release the mouse button on the centre of your circle then move your mouse outward until your circle is large enough. Press and release the mouse button again to finish drawing the circle. You cannot resize the circle once you have released the mouse button for the final time. Appendix 27

32 Smooth Line: Press and hold the mouse button, then while still holding the mouse button down draw your curved line. The software will automatically smooth the line for you. Normal Drawing Delete: This button deletes ALL the Normal drawings on the screen at one time. NOTE: You cannot undo this function. A Normal drawing is a drawing that only stays on the screen for that frame of the video clip. When you move the video clip either forward or back all the Normal drawings will disappear. These drawings will not come back when you return to the original frame. There can be a mixture of Normal and Sticky drawings on the screen at one time. Sticky Drawing Switch: Click on this button to activate this switch. All subsequent drawings will be drawn in Sticky mode until the switch is turned off. You can tell you are in Sticky Mode by an indicator in the upper left of the video area. Sticky Drawing Delete: This button deletes ALL the Sticky drawings on the screen at one time. NOTE: You cannot undo this function. A Sticky drawing is a drawing that stays on the screen for ALL frames of the video clip, even when you move the video clip forward or back. There can be a mixture of Normal and Sticky drawings on the screen at one time. Selector: You use the Selector tool to select any drawing on your screen. You can only select one drawing at a time. Once you have selected a drawing you can delete it (see below) or move it. You can also select the tips of the three types of Lines or the Arrow and move their endpoints. Selected Delete: This button deletes only the selected drawing. Redo: Pressing this button redoes almost any action that was undone (see below). NOTE: You cannot redo the Delete all Sticky drawings or the Delete all Normal drawings actions. Undo: Pressing this button undoes the last action that was done. They are undone in reverse order to the order they were done in. NOTE: You cannot undo the Delete all Sticky drawings or the Delete all Normal drawings actions. 28 Appendix

33 Line Colour, Opacity and Thickness Palette: When you click this button the colour palette will appear somewhere on the screen (where it appears depends on where it was when you last closed it). The colour palette allows you to change the colour, thickness and opacity of the NEXT lines you draw. You can move the palette around by clicking and dragging on the palette anywhere but on a button. You can close the palette by clicking the red X or clicking the original palette button again. Appendix 29

34 Treadmill running versus road running The debate between treadmill running and road/ground running has been raging ever since treadmills were invented. The major question you will be asked is does treadmill running represent over-ground running? Like most things in science there is no simple answer but the following paragraphs should give you sufficient information to answer this common. From an analysis perspective both treadmill running and ground running have their inaccuracies and technical problems, the question really is which has the lesser number of problems. The advantages of treadmill running are: The runner is in one place all the time and this means the camera can be very close to them (even meter) creating a high level of accuracy in any measurement. There are no acceleration or deceleration phases compared to running on an indoor track, you can capture the runner at steady state which is critical. (NOTE: this is also a huge problem with the validity and usefulness of pressure pads on the floor, the customer never runs naturally over the pad at a steady pace). Decrease space needed in the store. Speed can be very accurately reproduced for each shoe tested. The disadvantages of treadmill running are: Detailed biomechanical studies have shown that treadmill running does differ from road running but these differences do decrease the more the customer practices and feels comfortable running on the treadmill. The advantages of ground running are: It is natural. The disadvantages of ground running are: You need a very long runway (15-20 m) to get the runner in a steady state and avoid acceleration and deceleration problems. Your camera is many meters (4-6m) away from the runner in order to get one full cycle in; this dramatically reduces the accuracy of the analysis. Speed cannot be accurately reproduced between shoes, speed affects foot mechanics. Summary: The treadmill is the best option for space and consistency of analysis in running retail. Because you are comparing one shoe to another shoe or perhaps to barefoot running, consistency and close up analysis are critical and the treadmill option provides these. 30 Appendix

35 Camera options in software To give screen dimensions that better reflect the tall narrow image of a person running on a treadmill you must turn your camera 90 degrees to normal. You can rotate it either way as the software can rotate the image back to level. This section will show you how to select your camera if more than one is connected (eg a web cam and your Mini DV camera) and also how to rotate your video clip to bring it back to level. Step 1: Click on the Dialed In Motion Logo in the top left hand corner of the screen. This will reveal the applications menu (see page 12). Step 2: Click on Tools then on Edit Camera Options. Step 3: In this window you can: Select the input camera(s) If using two cameras, you can choose which camera configuration you are using. Choose the device and device settings (e.g. NTSC, Pal, SD, HD, Widescreen) Rotate the camera image on screen to account for the camera set on its side. See the Camera Orientation section of the Setting up the Space section (page 6) for more details on this critical step). Set the capture limit between 1 and 10 seconds. Four (4) seconds is the factory default setting. NTSC SD Settings Appendix 31

36 Note: Which video format to choose? Pal SD Settings Countries using NTSC format: USA, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Japan, South Korea, Peru, Taiwan. Countries using Pal format: Australia, Argentina, Brazil, China, most of Europe, Ireland, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, UK, UAE. NOTE: If your playback seems sluggish using MJPG 1080 at frames per second (fps), you system may be having trouble keeping up with the dual capture. Your Video Capture Format options are now MJPG fps or MJPG fps. Both are HD but 1080 is a higher resolution. NTSC HD Settings 32 Appendix

38 Dual Capture Configuration Some versions of Dialed In Motion provide the option to capture from two cameras in a mixed view so that the feed from both cameras is mixed and captured. Two layouts are supported: Back and Side, where the Back camera is rotated 90 degrees and the side camera is in the standard landscape. Back and Front where both the Back and Front cameras are rotated 90 degrees The configuration you choose depends on the focus of your shoe fitting methodology. Step 1: Select the camera mix that matches your camera layout eg Back and Side if you re using a side on camera or Back and Front if you re using a front on camera. 34 Appendix

39 Editing the shoe inventory The Dialed In Motion application comes with a pre-populated Shoe data file that you can edit to include the shoes that you stock. Shoes are described by Brand, Model and Category. The Category descriptor is used to describe the functionality of the shoe, eg Control, Neutral, Stability, etc. It is worthwhile to note that if a shoe is not in the shoe list (for example, you re documenting a shoe that the customer is wearing and it s not in your inventory) you can always simply type the details into the appropriate fields on the capture form. Step 1: Click on the Dialed In Motion Logo in the top left hand corner of the screen. This will reveal the applications menu (also see page 12). Step 2: Click on Tools then on Edit Shoe Inventory. Step 3: The shoe editor will open. Note that it is broken into two sections, Brand and Model. When you select a Brand, the items in model are filtered so that you only see the Models for the selected Brand. Appendix 35

40 Step 4: To add a Brand, type the Brand name into the Add Brand field and click on Add Brand. Your new brand will be appended to the list of brands. Scroll through the list and select the Brand that you ve entered. You ll note that there are no Model items for your new Brand. Step 5: To add a new Model description, type a description into the Add Model field. Select a Category from the category drop down and then click on Add Model. You ll note that your model has been added to the list. 36 Appendix

41 If you wish to edit the Category list, click on Tools then Edit Categories. The category editor will open and you can add new categories by typing the category into the Category field and clicking Add Category. To delete a Category, select it in the list and click Delete. When you ve finished editing your category list, press Save to save changes and exit or Cancel to exit without saving. Step 6: Save your changes by selecting File then Save. Step 7: Exit the editor by selecting File then Quit. Appendix 37

42 The Shoe Editor can be used by Head Office to create a standard shoe list that can be distributed to satellite stores. In this case you d make use of the File then Save As to save the ShoeDataFile.XML elsewhere on disk for later distribution via etc. Step 8: In order for your changes to take effect in the application you will need to restart the application (NOT the computer). A message box will pop up to remind you of this. Click OK and then click on the Close button. When it has closed open it again and your updated shoe list will be in use. 38 Appendix

43 Editing the consultant list You can create a list of consultants (the staff who will use this application to conduct an analysis on a client) to save having to type a name each time you use the application. Step 1: Right click on the Consultant drop down and choose Edit from the popup menu. Step 2: Edit the list of consultants, each new line will be a new item in the list. Click Ok to finish. If you wish to simply change the order of the consultants in the list then cut and paste the entries into the desired order. Appendix 39

44 Editing shoe notes list If you wish, you can enter notes on the Analysis page about your observations when the customer is trialling a particular shoe. To automate this, you can provide a pre-set list of generic notes that you often use. Step 1: On the Analysis page, right click in the Notes field. You ll notice that a pop-up menu will open. This menu provides you with all the options you ll need to select comments you already have in the list, add additional comments and delete comments. Step 2: Choose Select Comment and choose an option you have previously entered (if any). Step 3: Move your mouse over Add Comment to reveal the text box. Click in the text box and type in your comment. Click on the Add button to add it to your list of comments. Step 4: If you ve made a mistake and need to delete a comment, move your mouse over Delete Comment to reveal the drop down list of comments. Select the comment you wish to delete and then click on the Delete button. Step 5: You can clear all the notes by pressing the Clear Notes option. You can undo this by clicking the Undo Clear Notes option. 40 Appendix

45 Configuring the video display method The Dialed In Motion Shoe Fitting system provides the ability to show the video in a variety of ways depending on your systems specifications and your time. Read through this entire section before selection the best option for you. Step 1: Click on the Dialed In Motion Logo in the top left hand corner of the screen. This will reveal the applications menu. Step 2: Select Admin then Settings, then Edit settings and select the VIDEO METHOD tab. Appendix 41

46 Step 3: Choose the Video Method that bests suits you. Make sure you read the Important Points below before making your decision. If you cannot read the text in the image above you will find the same text in the application by following Steps 1 and 2 above. In Summary: The Compress option is the default, the only negative of this option is the time it takes to compress the video clip before you can analyse it (about 7 seconds per second of video captured). The quality is comparable to the others and you get 50 or 60 images per second (depending on if it is a Pal or NTSC camera). The Frames options gives you instant access to your video clips at full quality but only 25 or 30 images per second (depending on if it is a Pal or NTSC camera). The Fields options gives you instant access to your video clips at full quality and at 50 or 60 images per second (depending on if it is a Pal or NTSC camera). This is the best option but due to inconsistencies within Windows this does not always work. If you get a Loading icon in the upper right of the screen and then a Load Failed window appear like those shown in the images below, your system cannot play the video in Field mode. Press the OK button and then reselect your video by pressing the CURRENT SHOE button near the bottom of the screen. It will now be playing in Frames mode but you could also select the Compress option by starting from Step 2 on page Appendix

47 Adding your own branding to the Report The Dialed In Motion Shoe Fitting system provides the ability to add your shop name to the data in the database and to add you own logo to the Reports. To add your shop name to the database and/or add your shop logo to your reports, do the following. Step 1: Click on the Dialed In Motion Logo in the top left hand corner of the screen. This will reveal the applications menu. Step 2: Select Admin then Settings, then Edit settings and select the GENERAL tab Step 3: Type your shop name in the space provided then press OK. The Shop Name does not get added to your Report. It is used to identify the shop when the database is exported. To have your shop name on the Reports see the Important Note after Step 5 below. Appendix 43

48 Step 4: Again from the applications menu select Admin then Import Report Logo Step 5: In the new window that opens, navigate to the folder that has you logo image The space for the image is designed to be a banner that could include your shop logo and your shop name. The file format you need to use is the png format and the file should be 700 pixels wide and 100 pixels high. If your file is in another format (eg jpg, tif, gif, bmp, etc) or other dimensions (eg 100 x 100 pixels) you need to convert it to the png format and resize it. You will need to do this in image editing software or get it done by a graphic designer. 44 Appendix

49 Configuring database field visibility The application can collect a range of information about your client. You may not wish to collect data for some of the options so a dialog has been provided that lets you define what you wish to collect. Note that 'Firstname' and 'Lastname' are mandatory fields. The selectable options are: . Date of Birth. Gender. Terrain the terrain the client typically runs on. Distance the average distance per week in the units you d typically use in your country. Shoe Size no units are provided, simply use the typical units that you d use to specify shoe size in your country. Orthotic notes used to record information about orthotics that your client may use. Injury notes used to record information about any injuries that your client may have experienced recently. Step 1: Click on the Dialed In Motion Logo in the top left hand corner of the screen. This will reveal the applications menu. Step 2: Select Admin then Database Options then Database Fields. Step 3: Select the fields you d like to be visible by ticking them. Step 4: Click OK to confirm close the dialog and apply your settings. Appendix 45

50 Backing up your database If you ve chosen to collect client data then from time to time you should backup your database in case of a system crash. Note that video files and reports are not included in the database and will need to be backed up separately (see below). Step 1: Click on the Dialed In Motion Logo in the top left hand corner of the screen. This will reveal the applications menu. Step 2: Select Admin then Database Options then Backup and Restore then Backup Database. The backup system will automatically backup your database into your C:\Users\[Your computer]\documents and will be called something like DialedinmotionRunning.sdf sdf. Step 3: Navigate to your C:\Users\[your computer]\documents folder and copy the most recent backup to another device (or add this path to your backup script if you have one). Step 4: To back-up your reports and/or video files you need to navigate to C:\ProgramData\DimShoeFitt ingserver and copy those files to another device (or add this path to your backup script if you have one). 46 Appendix

51 Restoring your database If you ve run into an issue with your computer and have had to reinstall the operating system and software again then you can restore your client database from a backup. Note that if you ve also backed up the external report and video files then you ll also need to restore those (see below). Step 1: Click on the Dialed In Motion Logo in the top left hand corner of the screen. This will reveal the applications menu. Step 2: Select Admin then Database Options then Backup and Restore then Restore Database. Step 3: The restore process will begin and ask you to select the backup file to restore from. Step 4: When the backup has completed Click Close By default the Open file dialog will open in the C:\Users\[Your computer]\documents folder. Depending on where you ve backed the file up to (eg CD, external hard drive) you may need to navigate elsewhere to select the file to restore from. Step 5: If you ve backed up the external report and/or video files you should copy them back into the C:\ProgramData\DimShoeFittingServer folder. Appendix 47

These settings can be backed up so that: You can restore them if your PC crashes and you end up having to restore the operating system and applications. If you ve got more than one copy of Dialed In Motion Shoe Fitting in your store and you wish to standardise settings across all PCs. If you re part of a wider organisation and head office wants to send out a standard set of settings for you to use. The settings that are exported are Application Settings: o Camera rotation and default capture time. o o o Selected data entry fields for the database. The Application Flow Options. The name of the store. Consultant list the list of staff that will carry out analyses. Shoe list the list of shoe Brands and Models. Terrain list the list of different terrains that your clients may run on. Report banner the image used at the top of a report. Notes list the list of default text that you can enter in the notes field when doing an analysis. Step 1: Click on the Dialed In Motion Logo in the top left hand corner of the screen. This will reveal the applications menu. Step 2: Select Admin then Settings then Backup Settings. 48 Appendix
