7 V. THEORY OF OPERATION 1. SYSTEMS DESCRIPTION As shown in the following block diagram, the AC and DC signals are selected by a multiplexer and compared with a threshold voltage, Different threshold voltages are selected for AC+, green/yellow signals, red signals, and DC signals. The processor uses the 60 Hz signal to time the appropriate interval to compare the signals. If no fault occurs, the processor keeps the hardware watchdog circuit strobed, which maintains the fault relay in the non-fault state. If a fault occurs or the processor fails to strobe the watchdog circuit, the monitor closes the fault relay. The stop time signal is also generated on faults. Data shifted into the shift register is used to illuminate the front panel LEDs. The channel LED information is also applied to the program card. The output of the program card is shifted into the microprocessor to determine conflict status. The inverted 60 Hz signals is used with the yellow disable to determine which yellow channels to disable. A separate, internal watchdog circuit in the 2010 will cause the PF to illuminate, if for some reason the microprocessor fails to reset this circuit. Such is the case when the AC+ falls so low that the monitor s power supply cannot deliver sufficient DC to the microprocessor. This will create a non-latched, powerfail type fault condition which is reset when power is restored. U.S. Traffic Corporation Page 8

8 2. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF CIRCUIT OPERATION The Model 2010 monitor samples the channel inputs during the positive and negative peaks of the AC sine wave. A zero crossing detector generates falling edges on the negative slope of the AC line for input to the microprocessor Interrupt 0. The interrupt starts a timer in the microprocessor which then marks the start of the sampling window. AC inputs are divided down to approximately 2.5 volts peak. Inputs are multiplexed one at a time through 4051 analog switches (U580, U581, U680, U780, U781), to a comparator (U992). The comparator compares the input voltage to a threshold. The output of the comparator (Status) is input into the microprocessor. Thresholds are generated by a resistor divider network. A precision 2.5 volt signal is the reference for the resistor network. A section of U991 provides negative voltage to the network. The appropriate threshold is output to the comparator by a 4051 analog switch (U980). The microprocessor selects a positive or a negative threshold voltage, depending on whether it is sampling a positive or negative half of the sine wave. There are threshold voltages for 98, 93, 60, and 20 volt RMS inputs. Half-wave conditions are detected with the HALF comparator. The HALF signal uses a threshold voltage which is 1.4 times the STATUS threshold. This second threshold is generated by U991. The microprocessor uses the HALF input and previous half cycle status to determine if a half-wave condition exists. Latch U960 selects between the 4051 multiplexers. U970 sets the addresses for the input and threshold muxies, and controls the latching relay. U971 decodes addresses for U960 and U970, and outputs a re-trigger pulse to the re-triggerable monostable which controls the fault output relay. U270 provides level detection for DC input signals. Its outputs are opto-isolated and input to the microprocessor. The microprocessor times fault conditions by counting cycles of the AC line frequency. Re-triggerable monostable U470 must receive a pulse from the microprocessor each half cycle, or the fault output relay will put the intersection in flash. This is a watchdog feature that prevents an unsafe intersection if the microprocessor becomes lost. Channel and fault status is displayed on the LEDs through shift registers U921, U721, and U521. Channel status from these shift registers is routed to the program card. The diodes on the program card determine if a channel is in conflict with another channel. Outputs from the program are read by the microprocessor through shift registers U850, U650, and U451. Watchdog disable and program card ajar signals are also provided through the same shift registers. For 2010 monitors, the PLUS enable DIP switches are read from three additional shift registers, U350, U450, and U550. Whenever a fault occurs, the channel status and fault information is stored in the EEPROM so that data will be preserved through power outages. Latch U960 selects between the 4051 multiplexers. U970 sets the addresses for the input and threshold muxes and outputs a re-trigger pulse to the internal watchdog half of the monostable multivibrator (U470). U971 decodes addresses for U960 and U970, and outputs a re-trigger pulse to the half of the Re-triggerable monostable (U470) which controls the fault output relay. U.S. Traffic Corporation Page 9

9 Plus Functions The 2010 Series of the 170 monitor incorporates the IDC Solid State Devices patented PLUS functions in addition to the standard monitor capabilities. Plus functions detect switch fail conditions, i.e. multiple indications and lack of output on a single channel (green-yellow, green-red, yellow-red). The plus functions detect a wider range of possible controller and load switches malfunctions than provided by standard 170 specifications. Plus functions enforce rules for incorrect signal displays as established by the M.U.T.C.D. Plus features are selectable on a per-channel basis by DIP switches located under the program card. When the plus functions are enabled, the inputs from that channel are restricted to certain combinations of red, yellow, and green (see figure 1). Plus functions are active only when red enable is asserted. Figure 1 Green Yellow Red Fault Signal Signal Signal Type Input Input Input Display RED FAIL NORMAL NORMAL MULT IND NORMAL MULT IND MULT IND MULT IND Short and Skipped Yellow Detection When selected via DIP switch labeled ENABLE, and if the monitor s RED ENABLE input is asserted, the monitor will watch each channel that has the PLUS DIP SWITCH enabled for transitions from green to yellow to red. If a transition from green on to green off is not followed by a yellow signal, a skipped yellow failure will be detected. Similarly, if a green signal turns off, but is followed by a yellow indication that is too short, a short yellow failure will be detected. The default for the minimum length of a yellow signal is 2.7 seconds, but through DIP SWITCH option, the time can be added to in 0.5 second increments, up to a total of 18.2 seconds. VI. MAINTENANCE 1. PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE Your 2010 monitor is built for long-term error-free operation. No preventative maintenance is required. 2. TROUBLE ANALYSIS 2010 monitors provide two diagnostic modes and a power-up self-test. A. Status Test When the monitor is in a fault condition, remove the program card. 1) Press the reset switch. The POWER LED flashes and the channel LEDs display GREEN inputs from the time of fault. Press the reset switch for next test. 2) The FDC FAIL LED flashes and the channel LEDs display the YELLOW inputs from the time of fault. Press the reset switch for the next test. 3) The CONFLICT LED flashes and the channel LEDs display the RED inputs from the time of fault. Press the reset switch for next test. 4) The LED test will repeatedly step the LEDs sequentially. To return to test 1, press the reset switch. To exit any subtest, replace the program card and press the reset switch. U.S. Traffic Corporation Page 10

10 B. Internal Diagnostic Mode When the monitor is in fault and watchdog enable is one, short test points TP920 and TP921. 1) Program card test. If all program card diodes are installed, the POWER LED will be on. Otherwise, the POWER LED will flash. Press reset to enter next test. 2) DIP switch test. During this test the DC LED will flash, and the channels LEDs will display the plus enable LEDs. The conflict LED will light if yellow timing is enabled. Similarly, WDT Error, PC Ajar, Switch Fail, Red Fail, and Yellow LEDs will light to display the yellow timing DIP switches. 3) Input multiplexer test. Each AC input is selected one at a time by repeatedly pressing the reset key. As each combination of input mux, input channel, and voltage threshold is selected, the LEDs show the test status as follows: CONFLICT LED = AC line mux and 103 volt threshold VDC & CONFLICT LED = AC line and 98 volt threshold WDT LED = Green inputs are being addressed VDC and WDT LED = Yellow inputs are being addressed CONFLICT & WDT = Red inputs are being addressed UNIT POWER LED = A negative threshold is being addressed To exit this mode, disable watchdog and press the reset switch. C. Power-Up Self Test At power up, 2010 monitors check its memory components. If an EPROM error is detected, the monitor will flash the first two LEDs repeatedly. If a RAM read/write error is detected, the monitor will flash its first three LEDs repeatedly. U.S. Traffic Corporation Page 11
