The rate of change in the television industry continues to increase, driven by both advancements in technology and changes in the way media is created and consumed. Our goal is to give you the knowledge you need to understand the complexities of these technologies and lead your organizations through this transition. The ongoing migration to software and IP-based infrastructures leads this revolution and is a primary focus of our conference this year. In addition we ll look at metadata-empowered workflows, remote production technologies, testing and measurement and the latest developments in the ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard. This year we have several case studies from industry leaders PBS, CNN and NHK that put these technologies into practice and illustrate the benefits and challenges of these transitions. This year s conference also marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of SMPTE. While the technology has changed considerably over the last 100 years, the need for standards that create interoperability is as important today as it was then. We hope you ll join us as we celebrate this Centennial at our celebration toast, reception and dinner on Wednesday. None of this would be possible without the extraordinary and record-breaking generosity of our sponsors and presenters. Once again they have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to this conference and to your education. Please be sure to extend your gratitude to them for making this conference both possible and affordable. Thanks again for coming to the conference. Enjoy! 2:50-3:25 p.m. IP and HDR technologies for 4K Live Production Hugo Gaggioni, Sony NHK launched the first 4K IP sports production truck: a case study of employing uncompressed IP synchronous transport video for live production. Telemetry and monitoring every piece of equipment can tell you a lot about what its doing, but only if you ask, and its only useful if you listen to the answer. Thank You! Bits By The Bay would not be possible without the generosity of these sponsors: 12:15-12:45 p.m. Testing Methodology - How to get all this new stuff to work? Karl Kuhn, Tektronix How do we monitor and troubleshoot disruption of SDI over IP and timing with PTP? How do we identify where in the network is the source of delayed, dropped or out of sequence packets? How will PTP coexist with bi-level or tri-level sync in hybrid facilities? What tools are needed to ensure interoperability with SDI with 4K, High Dynamic Range (HDR) Wide Color Gamut (WCG) and BT.2020? 12:45-1:00 p.m. Where do we go from here? Q & A 1:00-2:00 p.m. - Lunch Lunch Sponsored by Belden / Grass Valley 2:00-2:25 p.m. The Physical Layer Bob Ferguson, Belden What kind of cabling is appropriate for different applications to interconnect 4K devices in the SVIP facility? A Media Factory employs SMPTE Interoperable Master Format (IMF) methodologies, modern MAM and workflow systems. What is the interface for automated operations of content and rights management, traffic work order systems? How are application stacks chosen for media engines such as transcoders, quality control, DRM and CDN? What SMPTE standards are employed to future-proof operations and provides the maximum flexibility and scalability for OTT, VOD, and broadcast? 3:20-3:30 p.m. - Q & A 3:30-3:50 p.m. - Break PM Break Sponsored by Lawo Supersession: OTT delivery and Cloud-based solutions 3:50-4:20 p.m. Video in the Cloud Scott Malkie, Elemental/AWS 4:20-4:50 p.m. Hybrid cloud workflows & implementations Greg Holick, Quantum As content increases, storage costs decrease, and network costs remain relatively flat, workflows can be challenging when using cloud. This presentation will talk about what types of clouds there are, what the clouds are used for and what M&E is using in the cloud workflows today. It will highlight typical M&E workflows and when to use cloud and storage for real-time vs non real-time workflows. We will talk about Private cloud/object Storage and why it is a good fit for M&E and how it can be tied into a hybrid solution to provide a seamless workflow by putting the right data on the right platform at the right time for the right applications to work on that data. Scaling NAS for all these workflows can also be a challenge so we will cover why object can be a good fit when dealing with large amounts of data. We will solidify this with a customer example. Many applications are now embracing the cloud and it is important to understand when to use these applications on public, private or even hybrid cloud workflows. 4:50-5:20 p.m. Optimizing Encoding vs Bitrate Matthew Rehrer,Telestream What is the significance of QoE Scoring with ABR encoding? How is constant quality bandwidth optimization achieved? How quickly will the lower bitrate of ABR reduce delivery costs? Can ABR serve more viewer without increasing costs? How can additional content be published? How can optimized encoding delivering higher QoE? 5:20-5:50 p.m. NASA TV 4K channel Scott Woods and Joel Marsden, Harmonic NASA TV in partnership with Harmonic have launched the first UHD TV channel in the Americas via satellite. The content will be live launches, current ISS and remastered historic missions. Presently available only via satellite, Harmonic is currently working with pay TV providers to expand coverage and broadcast the channel via cable, satellite and optical networks. The channel will also be aavilable streamed over the web.
