Library Handbook E book between paper books by Maximilian Schonherr Strathmore Secondary College
Welcome to the SSC Library Strathmore Secondary College has a large library which aims to serve the students and staff of the college. It is centrally located within the school and comprises many resources as well as online material accessed through our library website. The collec on provides research support as well as reading material for all students and staff. We have a teacher reference collec on which supports the curriculum as well as a separate staff professional development sec on. We encourage book sugges ons for both our fic on and non fic on collec on as well as any website sugges ons that are relevant to the curriculum. The library is open from 8am to 4pm each day. Staff and students are welcomed throughout the day. You can catch up on the latest news and views with our collec on of newspapers and magazines, browse our extensive faculty teacher reference collec on or borrow a book for some weekend reading. Please contact the library staff for informa on or if you require assistance. library@strathmore.vic.edu.au Phone: Extn. 235 Library orienta on for teachers Orienta on is available to all teaching staff upon request. This can consist of a general tour, right through to training in the use of a specific library tool, such as Clickview. We would like to encourage all staff to become familiar with using the library catalogue and website. PD ac vi es are available on request.
The library catalogue Our library system, called Amlib, is used by many public libraries and our catalogue, which is now online is very easy to search. Library items may be searched by AUTHOR, TITLE, SUBJECT and KEYWORD. It is designed to be easy to use and can be accessed via the four OPAC computers in the library as well as from any desktop or laptop within the school. Staff can reserve a book, check their current loans or peruse past items borrowed by accessing the My Details page where they need to enter their Barcode No. (see library staff). The catalogue is an accurate record of the resources held by the library including non fic on and fic on books, e Books, magazines, websites, DVDs, Professional Development material and teacher reference resources. The OPAC is a great resource for teachers to search when crea ng a book box or assignment for a par cular class. It will give a clear picture of how many resources are held by the library to cover a par cular subject. Teachers can also use the catalogue to do a specific search for DVD tles. All DVDs should be taken to the desk to be checked out. Teachers are welcome to see the Library staff to arrange a brief informa on session on using Amlib correctly.
Loans and returns Staff can have unlimited items on loan at one me. They can reserve material and renew items when necessary. They can see library staff or do it themselves through the online catalogue. We also provide a list of all items on loan by a par cular teacher at the end of each semester in order for the library to have an accurate picture of what is on loan. We ask that teachers return, request a renewal, or inform us of any missing resources in your name. It is recommended that staff wan ng to loan their issued books to other staff or to students, bring the item back to the library OR call to no fy the library immediately. This will save on confusion as to who has a par cular item. Contract staff, CRTs and student teachers are able to borrow, but some condi ons of loan will be different. All staff must have all items properly loaned out by library staff before taking them from the library. Book boxes and Research Helpers Teachers can organise with library staff for a box of books on specific topics to be made available for class use. Please give plenty of no ce. Teachers will need to fill out a form available from the library sta ng: Teacher's name, Form, Topic, and Period of me the book box is required (see Appendix A). The book box is loaned to the teacher when needed in class and transported on a trolley. We ask that book boxes are returned to the library a er each class as the trolleys need to be circulated. Please remember to count the number of books going back into the book box and check it is the same as wri en on the front form. We ask that books being returned in book boxes be arranged neatly and not just thrown back in. If more than one teacher is using the book box at the same me please note that book boxes can be reserved. The library has also started providing Research Helpers which are used in conjunc on with specific assignments (see Appendix C). They are available online via the Libguides tab on our library website, as well as in pdf format that can be uploaded directly to Compass along with assignments. Research Helpers outline the research process, give specific keywords and search terms, as well as direc ng students to our library resources including non fic on books, databases and recommended websites. Teachers are asked to forward assignments to the library at least one week before distribu ng them to students so that this resource can be prepared.
Class use of the library Class visits Classes are welcome in the library, as long as they are going to make specific use of library resources. Teachers can pre book either the classroom area (tables) or the computer pods by no fying a member of the library staff with the date, period, class and subject, or, they can enter the booking in the booking sheet themselves which is held in the library workroom. Teachers should book well ahead of me as demand for bookings will be high and availability will be limited. For this reason only, one period at a me may be booked for a class so that access to the library is fair to all. When booked into the classroom area, students are able to borrow at any me during the class. The library computers may also be booked for class use. There are 2 computer pods with 6 computers on each with room for 2 students per computer. Please note that because of the 7 11 ipad program, research classes can also be run from the classroom area as well as the computer pods. Teachers must accompany classes and be responsible for student behaviour in the library. This includes supervising all students from their class and keeping noise to a minimum as there are usually VCE students on private study. Research classes The library offers research classes to all year levels using books, current awareness materials and electronic resources. These classes can be arranged to cover a specific subject or resource by talking to the library staff. Along with the classes, the library can recommend reputable internet based research and informa on sites. Please check under our Resources tab on our Library Home Page. It provides references and links to Search engines & Directories, internet research tools as well as online encyclopaedias and databases to which the library has a current subscrip on. Library passes No more than two students are able to come to the library from one class for research purposes at the same me. Numbers are restricted because of high demand by many other classes. Please fully complete a yellow library pass to accompany the students out of class. Alterna vely staff may write a note or sign the page in their diary. Students are to give their notes to the library staff upon entry. Passes are available from the library or from the library pigeonhole in the staffroom. Students not making suitable use of their me in the library or those without passes will be sent back to class. (see Appendix B)
Equipment kept in the library The library has access to the following equipment for staff loan: Digital cameras Digital FlipVideo cameras Digital Video Camera Extension cords Double adapters Power boards Speakers Data projectors (Datashows) This equipment is for educa onal purposes only, during class me. If students are sent to collect equipment they MUST have a yellow library pass to indicate which teacher requires the item. We ask that everything is returned at the end of the period. The item will be booked out in the teacher s name. Four data projectors are available. Bookings are essen al and can be made in the library workroom on the booking sheet. Please remember to report faults and difficul es to the library staff so that repairs can be made promptly. Data projectors MUST be collected and returned by teachers, NOT students. Class sets The English and History facul es store some of their most used class sets in the library (e.g. dic onaries and thesaurus ). Students can be sent to pick up and return these books. A crate and trolley is available for help in transpor ng these items.
TV Program Recording The library is able to organise the recording of requested programs for classroom use from free to air TV and Foxtel IQ Educa on Package. The latest copy of the Foxtel magazine is available in the staffroom each month. Please inform the library staff in advance of the program you wish to be recorded. All programs are then downloaded into Clickview. If a program has been missed, we can search the Clickview Exchange, otherwise in the majority of cases it can be purchased at a cost to the faculty. The best way to check for free to air programs scheduled over the coming week is to get your name onto our electronic distribu on list for the Australian Educa onal TV guide (Enhance TV) which is arranged by subject area and includes detailed summaries of each program. If you would like to receive this newsle er no fy the library. ClickView Strathmore Secondary College uses ClickView as a tool designed to assist learning in the classroom by providing an easy and complete solu on for watching videos and other digital resources within the College. ClickView Player is a so ware applica on that allows teachers and students to search, select and play videos on their ipad, Notebook PC or MacBook within the school. Videos can be displayed to classes using projectors and televisions. Teachers will need to install ClickView Player on their computer to access the videos. For easy instruc ons please visit this intranet page. Students have access to ClickView Player under the Start Menu on all school computers. For further enquiries please come and see us in the library or us. More informa on about ClickView is available on their website. DVD Collec on The library also has a small collec on of DVD s which can be loaned to staff. This consists of both documentaries and movies that support the curriculum. The collec on which can be searched through the library catalogue, is housed in the Library Workroom.
SSC Library Website The Library has its own website accessible through the Strathmore Secondary College website. There is a wealth of informa on and resources including Databases, ebooks and Libguides. Databases The library subscribes to several online databases. These can be accessed 24/7, however access off campus will require you to login to the school Intranet. Our databases include World Book Web, Modern World History Online, Science Online, WebLinks Online, and Who Next.? Online.
