2 CANADIAN PREMIERE A CO-PRODUCTION WITH THE ARTS CLUB THEATRE, VANCOUVER A Doll s House, Part 2 By Lucas Hnath Mustard By Kat Sandler MAINSTAGE 1 September 16 October 14 MAINSTAGE 2 October 30 November 25 So endlessly stimulating...stirs the heart even as it invigorates the mind BROADWAY NEWS A culture-defining drama revisited. In 1879, when Nora left her husband and children at the end of Ibsen s A Doll s House, her door slam reverberated around the world, creating a storm of controversy; much of it focussed on Ibsen s clarion call for gender equality. Hnath s stunning new drama begins with a knock on that same door 15 years later, as Nora returns with an urgent request, confronting husband, daughter and the woman who raised her children. Layered and very current, A Doll s House, Part 2 was nominated for the 2017 Tony Award Best Play. It is simply stunning! The intellectual excitement is palpable, as arguments around gender, marriage and family are turned upside down and inside out. Michael Shamata 90 minutes of emotionally complex, witty and well-paced magic literally and figuratively. EXAMINER.COM A surreal comedy about friends, real and imagined. Thai is sixteen. Her father has left and her mother finds solace at the bottom of a wine glass. Mustard, her imaginary friend, is still living under her bed and he doesn t want to leave her. Sandler won the 2016 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play for this magical twisted fairy tale about love, desire and moving on. Kat Sandler is a young playwright with a unique voice, and Mustard is an unusual combination a sweet-natured comedy about the challenges life throws our way. MS
3 AN ALBERTA ABORIGINAL PERFORMING ARTS (EDMONTON) AND PUNCTUATE! THEATRE (CALGARY) PRODUCTION Bears By Matthew MacKenzie 4000 Miles By Amy Herzog MAINSTAGE 3 January 29 February MAINSTAGE 4 April 9 May a witty, riveting and evocative production... Bears will leave you breathless. NOW MAGAZINE A multi-disciplinary journey through our wondrous and contested environment. Pursued by the RCMP, Floyd has to get out of town fast. Heading through the Rockies for the Pacific, through the forests and along the rivers, he experiences changes inside and out. Floyd s journey is assisted by the wildlife he encounters especially the bears. Bears won two Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards in Edmonton for Outstanding Musical Score and Outstanding Choreography. I d never seen a piece that speaks to issues facing Canada s Indigenous peoples as effectively and beautifully as Bears does. JERRY SADDLEBACK, CREE ELDER AND DEAN OF CULTURAL STUDIES AT MASKWACÎS COLLEGE I want to showcase the work of one of our country s outstanding Indigenous theatre companies. This story is so theatrically bold with its chorus of female dancers. MS...funny, moving, altogether wonderful... A heartening reminder that a keen focus on life s small moments can pay off in a big way onstage. THE NEW YORK TIMES An intergenerational comedy about finding peace, love and understanding. New York. The middle of the night. Vera, an irascible, politically active 90-year old is awakened by her grandson Leo, who has cycled from Seattle on a trip with his best friend. In their month together, Vera and Leo bewilder each other, argue and connect as they discover the thin line between growing up and growing old. A finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize, Herzog s 4000 Miles is populated with beautifully drawn characters you ll fall in love with. Amy Herzog s writing is so exquisite, and this story is so simple and true and affecting, I have wanted to program it for years. Funny and recognizable it sneaks up on you, and before you know it you don t want to say goodbye to these people. MS
4 AN ARTS CLUB THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTION, WORLD PREMIERE VANCOUVER Mom s the Word 3: Nest ½ Empty Written and performed by Jill Daum, Alison Kelly, Robin Nichol, Barbara Pollard & Deborah Williams SUMMER COMEDY July 24 August 12...a perfect balance of emotion and comedy... a performance you really do not want to miss LORDS OF DOGWOOD...riotous & poignant... BROKENLEGREVIEWS A new generation of laughs. Tickets on sale now! Season ticket holders get a 25% From the world-renowned creators behind the Mom s the Word series comes a new chapter. Their kids are grown, their marriages have evolved, and their bodies are backfiring. Life doesn t get any prettier, but it never strays far from the ludicrous, the ribald and the poignant, as the moms continue to mine their personal history for every embarrassing detail. I have been in love with these women for almost 25 years, and continue to be amazed at their ability to make everyday life both hysterical and deeply moving. MS Griffin & Sabine By Nick Bantock Discount Tickets December 4 23 Griffin Moss is a lonely artist in London, who makes postcards for a living. His life is changed forever when he receives a cryptic postcard from Sabine Strohem, a woman he has never met. She is an artist who illustrates postage stamps, and lives in the South Pacific. The two begin An Extraordinary Correspondence. Combining elements of romance, mythology, modern philosophy, and Jungian psychology, Griffin & Sabine is the story of two souls seeking the courage and the means to unite. The remarkable Nick Bantock lives in our community, and his enchanting story together with his breathtaking artwork were a part of my history. The chance to put these characters and images onstage is delicious and irresistible. MS on sale now exclusively to 19 season tickets holders.
