1 News and Notes December 2018 Friends, I am writing this column very close to Thanksgiving Day, which of course turns my mind to things of which we re thankful for at MPL! In no particular order, today I appreciate: Staff members and managers so full of ideas (all good) that Fiscal Officer Amie and I still need to triage and trim tens of thousands of dollars from all their budget requests for next year. But expected revenue will allow us to say yes to much that has been delayed, including a new phone system and the replacement of the training laptops and Belloni Branch computers. This beautiful building, a gift that we maintain for the community all year long, but especially delightful right now as the Children s Department gears up for the annual Winter Wonderland. The support we enjoy from all three of our communities. I had the chance to see that first-hand during the Christmas in the Village when hundreds of children and parents visited our Askren Branch. The end of two roofing projects before the snow flies, and the last of the HVAC units working again, right in time. Next up a leaky boiler. BOOKS, of course! Right now I highly recommend Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate for anyone who loved Nightingale or Orphan Train. I m looking forward to an evening at home tonight, and awaiting me is this compelling story about a poor family fighting to stay together while children are routinely adopted out to wealthy families. My sister LOVED it, so there you have it! A full healthy (or getting there) staff, and that a fender bender yesterday did not seriously hurt the Bookmobile or anyone else. (We were not at fault!) People who take time to say Thank You to library staff, such as the recent phone call to the Outreach Department, thanking them for picking out and delivering books, and calling staff members a blessing. We feel the same about all of YOU, and hope you are counting your own blessings! Sherie Brown, Director The Main Library, Bookmobile, and Askren Branch will be closed on December 23, 24, and 25. The Main Library, Bookmobile, and Askren Branch will be closing at 1pm on New Year s Eve and closed on New Year s Day. The Belloni Branch will be closed December 24 through January 1. Hoopla and OverDrive will still be available to download books, movies, and more!
