3 Fall Book Sale Fall Book Sale Opens October 8th After the best Spring Sale in the history of the Friends, volunteers and customers are looking forward to the Fall Sale. It starts Saturday, October 8 at 8 AM at 501 Esty St. and runs until Bag Day on October 25, when $1.00 buys you as many books as you can fit in a Wegmans plastic bag. Friends Support County Libraries The Friends continue their mission to support high quality library resources for everyone in Tompkins County. This includes awarding grants to the Tompkins County Public Library (TCPL). Proceeds from the 2015 sales allowed the Friends to give TCPL a $335,000 grant. This amount includes general support to TCPL for collections and staff development, as well as a separate grant for special projects. Members of the Friends of the Tompkins County Public Library give a ceremonial check from the 2015 Book Sales to Library Director, Susan Currie. (l. to r., Clare Greene, Book Sale Coordinator, Friends of the Library; Nina Scholtz, President, Friends of the Library; Susan Currie, Director of TCPL; and Chris Kourkoutis, Publicity Chair, Friends of the Library) Susan Currie, TCPL Director, stated: We are deeply grateful for the donation as it allows us to conduct some major projects, such as inventory and website updates, which are essential for a well maintained and accessible collection. We have long wanted additional resources for our popular ESL program, and this allows us to develop that collection more deeply both in print and online. The Finger Lakes Library System (FLLS), which connects public libraries in Cayuga, Cortland, Seneca, Tioga and Tompkins counties, was also given support and a special grant to update their card catalogue and to purchase a special software program that helps make library holdings show up at the beginning of Google book searches. Grants Help Ovid Library The creative and enthusiastic staff at the Edith B. Ford Memorial Library in Ovid, New York, have taken full advantage of a new grant awarded by the Friends Library Grants Committee in The Library used the funds to build a new, outdoor, A-frame sign to announce their events and programs. The old sign was weather-beaten and leaky. Librarian Cady Fontana reported that the new sign was thoroughly tested last winter and held up very well. She also stated that, Our 2014 grant project, our toy storage bench, works really well for our needs. The kids love playing with the toys during our frequent and popular story time and family visits! Books on Cinema This Spring, the Friends received a large donation of books from the estate of Prof. Donald Fredericksen, a film studies professor at Cornell and a Jungian psychotherapist. Fredericksen was a noted expert on Polish and Eastern European cinema, but his library reflected a very broad interest in international and US film history. This unique donation includes many unusual volumes on film history and critical theory, monographs on film directors and producers, small run academic press books, vintage actor biographies, and more. 3
4 Grants continued... Each year the Friends of the Library s Library Grants Committee offers small grants, generally in the $500 to $1,000 range, to help libraries develop their collections, purchase equipment and furniture, and implement programs. Such small grants can have a relatively large impact on our local libraries abilities to fulfill their missions, since many are facing severe budget constraints. Friends of the Library The Edith B. Ford Memorial Library is described as a Place for New Possibilities. Libraries are growing and filling the role of community centers, said Shannon O Connor, Director of the Library. We are no longer just a repository of books; we provide so much more with programs, technology, hands-on computer assistance, and a resource for parents and children to enjoy learning together. With our Friends Library Grants we have been able to better advertise our services and create a very welcoming space for families. For more information about the Friends Library Grants program, please libgrants@booksale.org or visit: Book Sale Home Gets a Colorful Makeover It used to be the big GREEN warehouse, but now, thanks to Bumblebee Painters, it s the big BLUE warehouse. The folks at the Friends of the Library Book Sale are tickled pink with the job done by Bumblebee and very appreciative of their reasonable rate and donation of paint. Thanks also to volunteer Doug Reid, who provided the lift and the work to repaint the big sign. We also appreciate the addition of the box corral to keep the free, empty boxes from blowing away on windy days. The Book Sale found a permanent home when the Friends purchased the 5,000 sq. ft. warehouse in November, Over the past 25 years, they have made many improvements to the building: the recently remodeled Collector s Corner; new bathrooms; more efficient furnaces; and ceiling fans. Plans are in place to install bike racks in front of the building before the Fall Sale Quilt to be Raffled at Fall Sale Ten avid Book Sale volunteers, who love quilting almost as much as they love books, have created another colorful quilt to raise funds for the Library. This is the fourth year that the Book Sale quilters have made a quilt. It has been on display at the Tompkins County Public Library all summer and will be on display at the Fall sale. Tickets are $1.00 each, or $5.00 for six, and will be available at the Fall Sale and at the Library. The winning ticket will be drawn at the close of the Fall Sale. The winner of the drawing does not have to be present to win. Books on Cinema continued... This donation first caught the eye of category sorter Mike Scholtz not only for the high quality of the books, but also because of how neatly it was packed: each box had a color photo on its lid showing exactly what was inside, with another copy of the photo loose in the box. Scholtz suggested that Collector s Corner (where individually priced, higher-quality books are sold) might want to pay special attention to these books. Fred Gleach, Collector s volunteer, reviewed the entire donation much of it done sitting twelve feet up on the top shelf in the front storeroom, where many of the boxes had been set aside. Only half of the donation was included in the Spring Sale; the remainder was put into storage and will be available in the Fall Sale. Rare items in the boxes filled three full shelves in Collector s Corner for the Spring Sale, and we anticipate a similar amount this time around. The books drew a good deal of attention at the sale, sold well, and prompted those who knew him to share their memories of Prof. Fredericksen s great teaching style and kindness.
