1 President s Corner Rediscover Your Library in 2018 The start of the new year is a great time to seize the opportunity to rediscover E. G. Fisher Public Library and all it has to offer. Nationally, use of public libraries have gone up and down over the past few years: 53% of adults visited a library in 2012, 44% in 2015, and 48% in Let s help make 2018 a record year! Here are a few reasons to rediscover YOUR library: 1. We ve got books: And lots of them. Sitting and reading relives stress, helps stimulate brain function, and has other positive effects on health and well-being. 2. Free Wifi: E. G. Fisher Public Library has offered free wifi and computer access for several years. It is a comfortable place to utilize the Internet for information, social media, and job information. 3. Historical research: In addition to our many books, you ll find old newspaper copies on microfilm. These old editions, some from as far back as the early 1800s, are a treasure of historical information and are also entertaining to read. Both the microfilms and the readers used to view them are available for public use. 4. Public programs: A multitude of programs for adults, like the Noon Book Discussion (lunch is offered), and children s programs are offered throughout the year. 5. It s quiet: With the noise and stress of life, our library is still a place you can sit, read, relax, peruse the shelves, surf the Internet, or just enjoy the quiet and unwind. Recent surveys show that two-thirds of library users visit to borrow books, while around half go to read, study, or use social media. E. G. Fisher truly offers something for everyone. We hope you will make 2018 a Library Year, and make plans to utilize the library and its services and resources even more. We look forward to seeing you. 2 SPOTLIGHT: Katie Hiney Director of E. G. Fisher Public Library You became director of E.G. Fisher Public Library 5 months ago (July 5, 2017). What drew you to this job? I was looking to move to the Athens area for personal reasons, but my job search was coming up empty. I came across the vacant Library Director position and thought it could be the perfect fit. Turns out it was! Has anything surprised or delighted you about this library and/or this community? This community is one of the most pleasant communities I've had the opportunity to live and work in. I'm surprised by how much Athens and McMinn County have to offer their citizens: shopping, arts, museums, etc. Did you always want to be a librarian? Not always. I never could settle on what I wanted to be as a kid. But I practically grew up in my public library, volunteered in my middle school library and, short of paying rent, lived in my high school and college libraries. I was even known by the nickname "The Google Queen" in my college days for my ability to find the answer to anything. It wasn't until my second year of college that I figured out my dream job. What is your vision for the role E.G. Fisher could/should play in the life of McMinn County? The library already holds such a special place in hearts of our residents. Our library serves a unique and wonderful collection of people with a wide array of informational needs, and they really love what we provide. A big part of my vision is keeping that confidence in place while anticipating new needs before they arise, particularly providing guidance in an ever-changing digital world. I'd love to see an increase in the availability of e-resources and patrons who feel comfortable using them wisely. How can FOL be most helpful in supporting that vision? The FOL provides financial support that goes toward buying bestsellers, materials in alternate formats, and supplies for engaging and thoughtful programming. It may not seem like much, but these contributions allow us to allocate more of our budget to new pursuits, while catering to the classic library collection and services patrons have come to expect. The FOL allows us to be what we always have been while we simultaneously embrace change. What are some of your favorite things? Books, included! (e.g., Pina coladas? Getting caught in the rain? Ha!) I love scary things. I enjoy horror films from every decade. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I write horror fiction in my spare time. I adore musical theater. I'm also a big fan of tea, cats, and tennis. Some of my favorite authors include John Steinbeck, Shirley Jackson, Richard Matheson, Charles Dickens, Stephen King, and Margaret Atwood. How can McMinn County patrons participate in the life of the library? One of the biggest things they can do is use our resources. Many people don't realize that by utilizing our computers, borrowing materials, attending our programs, and simply coming through the door they are helping us do our best work. Beyond that we always appreciate whatever a patron is able to give: book/program suggestions or their time through volunteering. Of course donations are always welcome, whether its $1, a box of books for the FOL sale, a ream of copy paper, or participating in our Fisher Saturday Sponsor Program. We are always grateful for a helping hand! Thank You The Friends of the Library want to thank the following individuals for their generosity and support of the Library and its programs. Without your contributions, our programs would not be possible. In Memory of... In Honor of... Fisher Public Library! Our resolution for 2018 is to provide as many great programs to our community as possible. We are kicking off that resolution with a Healthy Living Series full of programs to help you and your family make 2018 your healthiest year yet. The Healthy Living Series will include a tai chi class with UT Extension, a nutrition class with nutritionist Jackie Berry, as well as a class specifically for those at risk for or who have diabetes or pre-diabetes. January will also feature the first of the new monthly Arts in the Library series. Each month the library will host one arts program including an mic night in January and a writers group in March. Community members are encouraged to bring their poetry, short stories, jokes, and more to share. This month also marks the addition of two new monthly book discussions and the return of the monthly Mystery Book Discussion and Noon Book Discussion. Tween Book Club is a new book club just for kids! Each month children ages 8 12 can read a pre-selected chapter book individually or as a read-aloud with a caregiver. At book club, kids can discuss the book, make a craft, and come up with a question to tweet to the author. Adults can check out the new collaborative Books and Beans Book Club the last Saturday of each month located at The Beanery. Each month a different community member or library staff member will lead the discussion. We will begin with reading The Girls by Emma Cline with a discussion led by Library Director Katie Hiney. Participants can relax with a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy a good book. Noon Book Discussion is back on January 16 with a discussion of Stone Song: a novel of the life of Crazy Horse by Winfred Blevins led by Dr. Joyce Baker. Mystery lovers can join the first 2018 meeting of the Mystery Book Discussion January 9 with a discussion of Eggs in a Casket by Laura Childs. Check out these new programs and more on the calendar!
