Read carefully and answer the questions that follow: TEXT A - Extracts from Storm (i) But the horseman quickly bent down and put a hand under one of Annie s shoulders and swung her up on to the saddle in front of him as if she were as light as thistledown. Annie s heart was beating fearfully. (ii) What a Night it was! The salty wind was going round and round in circles, first whipping them forward, then holding them up, then barging them towards the hedge on one side of the lane or the deep ditch on the other. The horseman kept one arm round Annie and Annie held on to the horse. The rain flew straight at them, spiteful drops sharp as pins and needles. (iii) The horseman stopped just outside the pool of light streaming through the open door, and none of them recognized him. He was tall and unsmiling. That s a rough old night, Mr. Carter called out. The horseman nodded and said not a word. Are you going into Waterslain? (iv) There was a slice of moon well up in the sky. It seemed to be speeding behind grey lumpy clouds, running always from something that was chasing it. The Carters little garden looked ashen and the marsh looked ashen and Mr. Elkin s fields looked ashen. TEXT B - Extracts from Ottoline and the Yellow Cat (i) Mr. Munroe came out of his room and tapped Ottoline on the shoulder. He was wearing a large, shabby raincoat.ottoline checked the curtains. Not now Mr. Munroe she said. (ii) Ducking an avalanche of perfectly plumped pillows. (iii) Mr. Munroe was wearing a large shabby raincoat, a pair of dark glasses,the Emperor of Heligoland s hat and an extremely long scarf. (iv) Mr. Munroe was going to ring the bell but Ottoline stopped him. Instead, they looked through a rather grubby window. Page 1 of 5

2 TEXT C - Extracts from St. George and the Dragon (i) As soon as the dragon heard George approach, he rushed from his cave, roaring as loud as thunder and shooting flames into the air. He stretched out his leathery wings like two monstrous sails and lashed his huge, poison-spiked tail. Yet George was not afraid. He held his shield high to protect himself from the burning heat of the dragon s breath and hurled his spear at the monster with all his might. (ii) Suddenly, George seizing his chance leaped at the dragon and pierced him under the wind where there were no scales. With an almighty roar, the dragon crashed to the floor like an earthquake, sending tremors across the hillside and over the fields towards the town.
