PROBUS NORTHSHORE EWSLETTER Volume 5, Issue 11 July 2008 Even though the weather wasn't the greatest I hope that everyone enjoyed the Canada Day weekend.

So far no one is complaining about this hardship-including me. As I look at the calendar for August I see we have a meeting on the 6th and our annual Anniversary Party and BBQ on the 20th.

August the First is the beginning of the Clubs fiscal year so membership renewals are due-dated August First. Don't forget that the fees have been raised $5.00

With the first of August Holiday coming up us retirees have to be careful that we plan ahead to fill up these extra "nothing to do days" when we have so many already! So far no one is complaining about this hardship-including me. As I look at the calendar for August I see we have a meeting on the 6th and our annual Anniversary Party and BBQ on the 20th. Be sure to get your tickets for this event because I know the planning committee has organized a great day for us at the Drope Farm in Harwood. 3 Probus Northshore Newsletter July 2008 Page 3 The Kids Just Might Be All Right The general acceptance that Children are our future hardly deters a certain wariness in the here and now. Too often the clichés of teenage years are accepted as fact, so called good news stories of achievements easily dismissed as exceptions rather than the expected reality. Thus it is not surprising that Brookside School should sense image issues, after all, every one of its students are there because they have had a run-in with the criminal justice system. That, of course, is the reason why Ron Cameron and Louise Nadeau, principal and vice-principal of the school respectively, feel a need to show that their students get better academic standing and do experience educational success and, in the end, hope to help people to understand young people who do horrendous things Time is hardly on their side. The average student is seventeen and 30% have accumulated but five High School credits. Then too the average stay is but three months. Thus of necessity the emphasis must be on short courses (so) they will know something leave with something. And since the possibility of graduation remains remote the courses focus on the practical emphasising the trades. There are courses in stone masonry and shops set up teach a number of phases of construction work, both credit approved for on-going apprenticeship programs. The boys love the program because they experience success Of course, these are complimented with a full academic program and when they graduate the possibility of earning college credits. Ron declares; I want to create taxpayers. Louise, as viceprincipal is in charge of behaviour management. Much of these deals with the obvious soft skills: politeness, punctuality, meeting deadlines. Others are the hard facts of the work environment, taking orders without attitude or mouth. Most important however is getting the student to accept responsibility for what they have done repair the harm. The program, called Restorative Justice, permits the victim to speak about the effect of the wrong doing and the guilty having to acknowledge he had done wrong. She insists, Correct behaviour can be taught. In the end Louise concedes the result is not a perfect citizen but a person with a changed perspective. Then what more can be asked? The more you complain, the longer God makes you live.

The virtues of eyesight seem to abound: seeing is believing, perception is reality, the eyes are the window on the soul. Thus it is easy to assume that losing one s sight must leave a person denied, deprived in experiencing the world around them in some fundamental way, suffer a sense of loss. But then Denise Chamberlin, who has been legally blind since the age of nineteen, would beg to differ, It is more difficult to have some sight than to be totally blind. She explained that as a teen when she still had some vision, she would walk down a street and upon arriving at a corner she would produce her fold-up cane. The cane would show that I was visually impaired and people would come over to help. Once across the street I would put the cane away. Even when she obtained her first guide dog she persisted, doing the work the dog should be doing. Eventually she relented and accepted, A seeing-eye dog is the closest thing to walking sighted I love the feeling of independence. Not to mention a restored sense of adventure, she has gone on the subway alone with Carla, her current dog; even navigated the labyrinth of Union Station. Then the dogs are trained not to socialize be aware of hazards like stairs concentrate on the person (even when) lying down at her feet in the `executive position`. She also retained her sense of humour, noting her dog can t read the sign on washroom doors, as if a mistake could matter or choosing a black Then there are the myriad of gadgets now available. She learned Braille as an adult and therefore is a very slow reader, but then there are the talking books provided by the CNIB. There s a computer program that is a screen reader so she can Goggle everything and allows typing on a regular keyboard to be read aloud. There are cell phones with GPS that that will call out the streets as you walk by and be adapted to take pictures of restaurant menus and then read them back to you so that you can order. Denise readily acknowledges, I do pretty much what everybody else does but only in a different way. But then there is nothing so appreciated as the kindness of strangers. A person who will notice, speaks so she may turn to face him, asks, How may I help? and offers his arm to lead the way. For Denise expecting that there is always a person there to help is very important for you to know. Thus when she was asked if by some medical intervention she could recover her sight she simply smiled her understanding knowing full well that such a question would be asked and then, then after listing the limitations of such procedures still have, replied, No I see myself as a sighted person in a blind body. I am comfortable with the way I am. But then how can we, the sighted, understand? Too obviously we lack her vision. Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see.
