1 Name: Section 4 Date: Commas A comma (,) tells the reader to pause for just a moment, but is not a complete stop. There are many different situations for which a comma is needed. Use a comma to separate a list of three or more items in a series. Example: He likes to run, jump, and play. Use a comma to separate the name of a city and its state or country. Example: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Use a comma after any introductory words. Example: Okay, that sounds like fun! When addressing a person, use a comma to set off the person s name from the rest of the sentence. Example: Ahmed, did you bring your homework? Rewrite the sentences adding the commas correctly in each sentence. 1. Nick and Sam welcome to our restaurant. 2. Tonight we will celebrate with food music and dancing. Page 1 of 16

4 Subject and Object Pronouns A pronoun used as the subject of a sentence is called a subject pronoun. I, you, he, she, it, we, and they are subject pronouns. A pronoun used after an action verb or as the object of a preposition is called an object pronoun. Me, you, him, it, us, and them are object pronouns. Examples: Subject Pronouns: She hiked in the desert. He and I stayed home. Object Pronouns: The plants surprised her. She told him and me about them. Singular pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, him, her Plural pronouns: we you they us them Choose the correct pronoun in each sentence. 1. Paul entertained ( us / we ) with some funny poems. 2. Paul read ( they / them ) out loud to the class. 3. The poem about penguins delighted ( me / I ) the most. 4. Does a tiny mouse frighten ( you / I )? 5. Mice and hamsters interest ( he / him ). 7 Singular and Plural Possessive Nouns To show that one person, animal, or thing owns something, use a singular possessive noun. Add an apostrophe ( ) and the letter s to a singular noun to make it possessive Examples: Singular Noun: Singular Possessive Noun: The bear slept all day. The hare did not like the bear s laziness. To show that two or more people share or own something, use a plural possessive noun. Examples: Plural Noun: The trees grew tall in America. Singular Possessive Noun: The oak tree s wood is hard. Plural Possessive Noun: All the trees wood was strong. Add an apostrophe ( ) to plural nouns that end in s, -es, or ies to make them possessive. To make plural nouns that do not end in s, -es, or ies possessive, add an apostrophe and an s. Examples: men men s boots oxen oxen s strength Circle the correct possessive noun. 1. 12 Verbs: Irregular Verbs To show a verb in past tense, usually an ed is added. Some verbs change in other ways Present Tense Past Tense come came fall fell go went hear heard is/are was/were leave left read read see saw take took tell told write wrote Read carefully through the text. Underline the twelve verbs and change the verbs so that they make sense. Cross out the wrong one and write the new one above. My Funny Weekend Last weekend I goed to my friend's house. First, I runned up to the door and ringed the bell, no answer, so I writed a note and readed it back to myself. Then my friend comed up. I thinked we might go for a ride on our bikes. We rided for miles and my friend bringed a packed lunch. It feeled good to be on the bikes. In the end we goed home and I bringed the empty packed lunch boxes. Page 12 of 16

15 Comprehension Patricia s Garden A glistening droplet slowly traveled down Patricia s cheekbone to the tip of her chin. The Georgia sun was hot, and the air was steamy. One more plant and I ll call it a day, thought Patricia. She planted a final geranium in the antique pot in the corner of the red brick patio. Finished, thought Patricia, as she stood back and admired her handiwork. Gardening was Patricia s great joy. She loved getting her hands into the soil and painting the landscape with hues of reds, pinks and blues. Although Patricia loved gardening, tears came to her eyes as she watered her plants. Last year at this time, her grandson Josh had been with her. He had been running around splashing water all over with the hose. Oh, how I wish he were here. I miss that little guy, she thought. At Patricia s house, Josh would play outside for hours and water the garden. He could entertain himself, and it was also fun to do projects with him. He used to come every day in the summer to play and to help with the garden. Then his father got transferred and the family moved to Kentucky. They will be here next month, Patricia thought. The garden will be in full bloom by then. Josh will think it is so pretty. But I wish he had been here to garden with me. An ant crawled along her arm, tickling her out of her thoughts. No sense fussing about all that now. The sun is out and the garden is planted. Just then the phone rang. Patricia quickly wiped her hands and answered the phone. It was Josh. Hi, I was just thinking about you! said Patricia, and her smile was as bright and warm as the Georgia sun. It was a good day. Page 15 of 16
