4 Chekhov and his Farces Anton Chekhov ( ) is certainly one of the most penetrating playwrights of all time. He had no idea that this would be the case since his efforts for the theatre were intended strictly for Russian audiences and are loosely structured at best. Yet his major works, The Seagull, The Three Sisters, Uncle Vanya, and The Cherry Orchard grasp the modern predicament perhaps better than any other dramatist of his day or ours. Unfortunately, Chekhov's imposing reputation, and the solemnity of Stanislavsky's famous interpretations, have caused us to regard him as a "serious" writer when nothing could be farther from the truth. Chekhov was a physician by training, but he supported himself and his family for many years as a writer of comic stories. Many of these he turned into farcical "vaudevilles" which were very popular in the Russian theatre of his day. Some of these are very good little plays indeed and foreshadow the great works of his artistic maturity. This evening you will see three of Chekhov's farces. The first, The Brute, is - to my mind more of a comedy than a farce since its characters pass from the ridiculous, to the ironic, and back again in the course of the play. The Marriage Proposal, on the other hand, has perhaps less character insight but uses what it has to create a scene of completely delightful misunderstanding and nonsense. Finally, The Wedding, gives us a portrait of a provincial wedd ing that is pure, knock down (literally) farce. We hope you enjoy these pieces. We also hope that they allow you to think of Chekhov as more than a dour and ponderous Russian writer. He was a good hearted, light hearted, soul who enjoyed a fu nny story and left a few of them behind for us. David Jorns, Director THE KENNEDY CENTER AMERICAN COLLEGE THEATER FESTIVAL XXXI Presented and Produced by The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Supported in Part by The Kennedy Center Corporate Fund The US Department of Education The National Committee for the Performing Arts This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KC/ACTF).
