1 PROBUS PATTER The Newsletter of the Probus Club of Port Hope and District Probus Club of Port Hope and District P.O. Box 322 Port Hope, Ontario L1A 3W4 Management Committee President Selwyn Shields Vice President Erik Norenius Secretary Keith Pickett Treasurer Doug Wright Membership Chair Jeannette Etter Newsletter Chair Gary Webb Program Chair Jim Kerr Special Events Chair Edith Carr Past President Betty Collins December 2005 Volume 7 Issue 12 Dear Fellow Probians: Message from the President It was wonderful to have such a large group of members and guests at our November 1 st. meeting as we paid tribute to our veterans and enjoyed Bruce Cox's fascinating tale of Four Days in Arnhem. Quite remarkably, seventeen of our twenty veterans of the Second World War managed to attend the meeting. A photograph of the group is on the next page. Thanks to the efforts of Keith Pickett, a coloured print of the photograph is being given to each of our veterans. Any member wishing to own a coloured print should speak to Keith and he will have one made available at cost. Margaret and Allan McCready have been putting the finishing touches to our Christmas Dinner Party. This event, always one of the highlights of our year, takes place on Tuesday 13 December at the Best Western Inn, Cobourg. The fun begins with a social hour at 6pm. The always entertaining Big Easy Seven swing band will provide music for our listening and dancing pleasure. TO-DAY ( 6 DECEMBER ) IS THE LAST DAY TO GET A TICKET for what promises to be a most enjoyable evening, so purchase them, for you and your friends, at the Special Events desk. Tickets are $35 for members and $50 for guests. Until recently, Probus Patter regularly included a column Getting to Know You ", which featured a photograph and brief biography of one of our members. Gary and I feel that we should resurrect this feature but one or two volunteers are needed to assemble the information. This would be a very pleasant way to meet other club members and therefore may appeal to our newer members. To volunteer or get more information, speak to Gary or me. A reminder that there will NOT be a meeting on Tuesday 20 December 2005.There is a meeting scheduled for Tuesday 3 January 2006 when local antique dealer Lee Caswell will be our guest speaker. On behalf of the Management Committee I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy Sel

2 Meetings November 1, 2005 A Veteran s Presentation --- Bruce Cox A special meeting honouring veterans in the Year of the Veteran. Bruce joined the British Army when he was 17 years old and became a paratrooper. He gave a firsthand account of his role in Operation Market Garden jumping into Arnhem from a Dakato in 1944, fighting near the bridge and getting captured. Bruce continues to speak of the real war at schools and venues such as ours. Veterans at the November 1, 2005 Probus Meeting Back Row: Arthur Gray, Bill McCarthy, Merv Richards, Bob Sculthorpe, Norm Gould, Charles Weaver, Don Campbell, David Butler, Ian Tait, Bruce Cox (Speaker) Front Row: Ken MacPherson, Ken Scott, Ross Darke, Joan Lawson, Jim Adamson, Glen Cotter, Howie Snow, Tony German Absent: Melodie Massie, Phil Clark, Tom Crooks November15, 2005 Duties of a Cobourg Parole Officer --- Christina Gray Christina gave a very informative presentation on her role as a parole officer in Cobourg. She discussed the difference between parole (the early release of an offender from prison under the supervision of a parole officer) and probation (a sentence to community supervision imposed by a judge.) She pointed out that parole does not shorten the offender s sentence: 1/3 of the sentence is served in prison and the remaining 2/3 is served in the community on parole. Interestingly, if parole is denied, the offender must be released by law after serving 2/3 of the sentence; in effect the sentence is shortened when parole is not granted. Several questions followed her presentation. December 2005 PROBUS PATTER Page 2
