1 FEBRUARY 2014 Kalamazoo s Community Theatre You Won t Want to Miss this Compelling American Classic! N o one knows what Helen Keller s fate might have been had she not come under the tutelage of Annie Sullivan, an Irish girl, whose sight had been severely damaged as a young child. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and is treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. Her success with Helen comes only after some of the most emotion-packed scenes ever presented on the stage. This compelling drama, directed by Kristen Chesak, features Civic veterans Kadie Alpers (Annie, Esperanza Rising), Saul J. 2 BEHIND THE SCENES ARSENIC AND OLD LACE PHOTO SHOOT INTO THE WOODS PHOTO SHOOT BEHIND THE SCENES MAILING JOIN US FOR OUR Wednesday, February 19th 6:30pm The Civic Auditorium UPCOMING AT A GLANCE HELD OVER! NOW thru Feb 15th THE PARISH THEATRE MUSICAL FOR TICKETS CALL: OR VISIT: Warm up this Winter at The Civic! I t s winter in Kalamazoo. It s about this time of year that we decide we ve had enough of the snow and cold temperatures, except Mother Nature always seems to decide differently. Unless you are a diehard skier or a polar runner, you are like me, wondering just what to do with yourself during these long winter months. Luckily, we are a community that has great indoor activities, including many at the Civic. Whether you are looking for a class, a place to strut your skills as a volunteer or an evening of great entertainment, we have it all. And the best part is that spending time at the Civic is a lot of fun. I hope you have had a chance to take part in a show or class so far this season or are planning to do so for the second part of the season. We still have several upcoming dramas including The Miracle Worker, Good People, and Irena s Vow, some fun comedies such as Boeing Boeing, and Dr. Seuss The Cat in the Hat, and two more lively musicals Irving Berlin s Annie Get Your Gun and The Magical Adventures of Merlin. Like the first part of the season, I always get such a thrill to see friends, family and neighbors coming together to produce quality theatre for the enjoyment of all. Although it may sound like we have a lot of productions remaining this season, in reality, we only have four months left of our 85th season. This means we are well underway planning our 86th season! It has been quite a task this season to put together productions worthy of the talent in our community; however, with the help of a very determined play reading committee and the amazing Civic staff, we have another diverse season of theatrical offerings just waiting to be announced. Kristen Chesak Managing Director It has become a tradition to come together as a community to celebrate the beginning of each season at the Civic with a live season announcement. You can be one of the first to hear what great productions are in store for our 86th season on Wednesday, February 19th at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium. I hope you will join us for a very brief program followed by refreshments in the Side Lounge. I d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your involvement at the Civic whether you are a subscriber, donor, volunteer, or a parent that ensures your child gets to participate here thank you. It is because of you that the Civic is such a special place to celebrate and share experiences as a community. I hope you continue to share your time, talent, and treasure with us and your community for years to come. In addition to production photos, audition information and cast bios, you ll also find a season calendar and many news features. Plus, for the first time, you can register for classes and Inside the Civic workshops online! Be sure to check back often, as we ll be adding even more exciting features!
