1 Mythical Worlds SEASON RENAISSANCE BAROQUE BRINGING EARLY MUSIC TO PITTSBURGH
2 SEASON ANONYMOUS 4 <> Anthology 25 Calvary Episcopal Church October 3, pm When four young women gathered to sing through medieval chant and polyphony in the spring of 1986, it was something that countless small groups of musicians do every day in a search for artistic adventure and autonomy that their normal musical pursuits can t provide. In Anthology 25, Anonymous 4 has created a special concert to celebrate their years together. They offer this gift to you, our listeners, who have helped to make it all possible, in celebration of Anonymous 4 s last season together. DARK HORSE CONSORT <> The Sound of St. Mark's Synod Hall November 14, pm Rising out of the Mediterranean Sea, nestled next to the Ducal Palace of Venice, lies the glistening St. Mark s Basilica. During the time of Giovanni Gabrieli and his colleagues, music making in the basilica was renowned throughout Europe. The sound of dazzling violins, bright cornetts and mellow sackbuts heralded back and forth between the balconies to the amazement of all who heard them. Featured will be the brilliant and resounding multiple choir canzoni by Gabrieli and Giovanni Picchi and the stunningly virtuosic sonatas by Dario Castello. EL MUNDO <> Buon Natale y Felices Fiestas Synod Hall December 12, pm El Mundo recreates the distinctive Latin sound of the old and new worlds. The Grammynominated group, led by Richard Savino, will perform a combined Italian, Spanish, and Latin American holiday program that consists of works that are both reverent as well as festive, including pieces by Legrenzi, Scarlatti, Kapsberger, Monteverdi, Castellanos, Durón, Ceruti, and Cozzolani, and an 18th-century trio sonata version of Corelli s Christmas Concerto
3 AULOS ENSEMBLE <> Crossing Borders: Multiculturalism in the 18 th Century Synod Hall January 16, pm Crossing Borders Multiculturalism in the 18 th Century is a program of works from the High Baroque, written by composers in one country in the style of another. The brilliant Canadian violinist, Marc Destrubé will be crossing borders to perform with New York s Aulos Ensemble, this year celebrating its 40th anniversary. Works included are Telemann s magical E minor Paris Quartet and Couperin s L Espagnol from les Nations. The Sebastians demonstrate their passion for energetic, historically-informed performance in this exploration of solo and trio sonatas by Arcangelo Corelli and his contemporaries. As the legendary Orpheus used his music as a rhetorical weapon, Corelli brought a new level of virtuosity and expression to violin playing. Corelli s infectious harmonic and structural language took Europe by storm, but it was his older Roman compatriots, including Lelio Colista, Girolamo Frescobaldi, and Alessandro Stradella, who set the stage. of the demand for this group, there can be little doubt energetic youthful, vigorous performance. The New York Times FLEYTMUZIK <> The Fairy Queen 20 th Century Club April 9, pm April 10, pm Renaissance & Baroque, Pittsburgh Camerata and Chatham Baroque join forces with Conductor Don Franklin to bring Henry Purcell s beloved semi-opera, The Fairy Queen, to Pittsburgh. With an all-star cast of soloists including soprano Laura Heimes, countertenor Ryland Angel, and baritone Mischa Bouvier, this production also includes a period instrumental ensemble, chamber choir, dancers and narrator. THE SEBASTIANS <> Orfeo del Violin Synod Hall February 6, pm <> Tartan, Baroque, & Klezmer Synod Hall March 5, pm FleytMuzik and its director, traditional klezmer flutist Adrianne Greenbaum, will take you on a curious odyssey through the experience of the Jewish itinerant musician: the klezmer. A professional since the 16 th century albeit displaying as well great expertise as a true musical gonif, a thief the klezmer adopted and stole their tunes wherever gypsies and society musicians co-existed. Unexpected influences and dialogue abound with cross-weavings of cultures from Slovakia, Scotland, Ottoman Empire, Italy, Germany, Hungary and Eastern Europe.
4 Mythical Worlds SEASON A myth is usually defined as a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being, hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation. Myths are the product of virtuosic imaginations and great storytelling. It sounds like music to me. Each of the seven ensembles on our season have a story to tell, a world created by their musical imagination where they invite you to enter. There will be heroes, sirens and enchantresses, and feats that defy natural explanation. The season will close with a fairy queen. This brochure provides you with information about the concerts, how to subscribe to the series and important deadlines for doing so. For more information about the musicians, visit our newly designed website. Join us for all seven concerts or select a number that works with your schedule. In a world where entertainment is at our fingertips, live music is still the most exciting, the most surprising and the most authentic experience. Gail Luley, Managing Director WHAT IS R&B It s old. It s new. It s music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, and Early Classical periods (roughly 1200 to 1800) performed by the best artists on the planet today. It s HIP which means Historically Informed Performance. Our performers go back in time for music, instrument designs, and performance styles bringing to the 21 st century music as it sounded in the time and place of its creation. It s music that speaks its own expressive language by being made now. Because sometimes historically informed means improvised and ornamented. It s one of the first organizations in the world to focus exclusively on presenting early music, and it s still recognized as one of the best. Join us for our 47 th season of bringing the best in Early Music to Pittsburgh! TICKET INFORMATION SUBSCRIBER SEATING / RENEWALS Renew your subscription by August 1 to hold your seats.
