2 Performance Plus bringing you the arts at their finest with touring performers from across the globe. Sol y Canto Tuesday, October 5 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, John Sutton Hall Sol y Canto is a nationally touring and Boston Music Award-winning Pan-Latin ensemble, led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer, Rosi Amador, and New Mexican guitarist and composer, Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi s crystalline voice, Brian s lush Spanish guitar, and virtuoso musicians from Uruguay, Perú, Panamá, and Argentina on piano, winds, bass, and percussion, the sextet has established a reputation for quirky original compositions and unique and driving interpretations of contemporary Latin music. The group has brought audiences to their feet from the Kennedy Center to the White House, the California World Music Festival to Boston s Symphony Hall, and Puerto Rico s Museo de Arte to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This Caribbean salsa ensemble travels to Indiana for its second visit, performing a spirited concert that is part of International Education Week and presented in collaboration with IUP s Office of International Education. A World First! Pig Iron Theatre Company in Chekhov Lizardbrain Two Performances! Wednesday and Thursday, November 10 and 11 8:00 p.m. Waller Hall Mainstage, A professional touring troupe, Pig Iron Theatre Company translates the absurdities of human nature into a series of highly physical vignettes in the 2008 Obie Award-winning Chekhov Lizardbrain. Part laboratory and part vaudeville theater, this performance piece pulls inspiration from doctor/playwright Anton Chekhov and the Three Brain theory of Paul D. MacLean to peel back the layers of the human mind. In this unique, ensemble-created work, a lonely, mildly autistic botanist conjures up a parade of unsettling and comic recollections in an attempt to shape his fractured memories into a comforting fiction. Pig Iron s virtuosic physical performers spin a web of memory and vaudeville and the impossible task of telling a story straight. This production contains situations and language to which some audience members may object and which may not be appropriate for children. Adrienne Danrich in I, Too, Sing the Weary Blues: Langston s Story Thursday, February 10 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, John Sutton Hall With the first preview performance planned for Indiana, world-renowned soprano, Adrienne Danrich, will perform this live documentary on the rich, full, and utterly fascinating life of American author, Langston Hughes. The multimedia musical 2

3 production will draw from a collection of poems, plays, opera libretti, and musicals by Hughes that breathes new life into his story. The work combines existing music with original music provided by New York-based musician and composer, Drew Hemenger. The work, presented as part of Black History Month, is co-commissioned by The Lively Arts at IUP in cooperation with the IUP African American Cultural Center. Evidence: A Dance Company Created and Directed by Ronald K. Brown Wednesday, February 23 8:00 p.m., The Lively Arts, University Museum, and the Pan-African Studies program proudly present one of the world s foremost contemporary dance companies. Founded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985, Evidence combines traditional African dance with modern choreography. For this special engagement, Evidence will perform two works, including One Shot: First Glance, based on the photography of the late Charles Teenie Harris, a Pittsburgher whose work will be on display in the University Museum. In a second dance piece, Two Year-Old Gentleman, Evidence examines male relationships, particularly those of fathers and sons. The appearance of Evidence is presented as part of Black History Month in cooperation with the IUP African American Cultural Center. Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Tuesday, March 29 8:00 p.m., IUP Performing Arts Center Celebrating the tenth anniversary of its partnership with IUP, the full Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra returns in all its glorious splendor, filling with unmatched musical brilliance. With a long and distinguished history of touring both domestically and overseas for over 100 years, the PSO continues to be critically acclaimed as one of the world s greatest orchestras. With more than thirty-four international tours, the orchestra has an equally distinguished record of domestic tours that have showcased it in all of America s major cities, including frequent performances at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. A Ben Munisteri Dance Projects Created and Directed by Ben Munisteri Thursday, April 7 8:00 p.m. Zink Hall Dance Theater World First! Founded in 1994, this New York-based dance company features contemporary works hailed as full-bodied choreographic feasts. According to a recent review by the New York Times, Munisteri has the ability to suggest both the absurdity and the reassuring potential of the human body. For its IUP engagement, the six-member troupe will perform three short pieces from its current repertoire including Catalog, Binary, and Tuesday 4 a.m. A new work, Know, will receive its premiere preview performance at IUP and will incorporate selected members of IUP Dance Theater. 3

4 Theater-by-the-Grove Dance Theater By Beth Henley Directed by Barbara Blackledge October 7-9 and :00 p.m. Sunday, October 10 2:00 p.m. Waller Hall Mainstage A Theater-by-the-Grove Production Winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Crimes of the Heart is a warm-hearted and brilliantly imaginative play teeming with humanity and humor as it examines the plight of three young Mississippi sisters. The oldest sister is facing diminishing marital prospects; the middle sister is back after a failed singing career; and the youngest sister is out on bail. Their troubles grave and yet, somehow, buoyant are highlighted by a prudish cousin, an old flame, and a comically awkward young lawyer. Ultimately, it is a story of how these women escape the past findomh strength from within their own family. This production contains situations which may not be suitable for younger children. Directed by Holly Boda-Sutton October :00 p.m. Sunday, October 31 2:00 p.m. Zink Hall Dance Theater An IUP Dance Theater Production Loosely based on the Grimm fairy tale Twelve Dancing Princesses, Sixteen Dancing Divas is an updated version which tells the tale of sixteen teenagers. Each night, their parents lock them away in their bedrooms, but come each morning, the soles of their brand-new shoes are worn through, much to the parents amazement and confusion. The devious divas attempt to keep their secret, but like any teenager who tries to keep a secret from her parents, they are eventually found out. The year is 1954 as a song-and-dance duo and World War II Army vets, Bob and Phil, take a trip up to Vermont for a pre-holiday gig. They find a sister song-and-dance act to be a perfect match and team to raise everyone s spirits with a string of hit songs, including the most popular song of all time, White Christmas. 5 By Arthur Miller Directed by Jason Chimonides February and :00 p.m. Sunday, February 20 2:00 p.m. A Theater-by-the-Grove Production The Crucible is both a moving portrait of a community tragedy and an explosive political allegory set against the Salem Witch Trials of the late 1600s. When the Salem minister s daughter is struck speechless, her father sets about looking for the cause. He suspects and alleges witchcraft. Soon, a quiet New England village erupts in suspicion and terror as neighbor accuses neighbor. At the center of the storm stand two people John and Elizabeth Proctor who refuse to bend in the face of public hysteria. This production contains situations which may not be suitable for younger children. Directed by Holly Boda-Sutton and Michael Kingan March 26 7:00 p.m. A Dance Theater & Percussion Ensemble Production In a one-night-only performance, this unique presentation takes on a different beat as the two groups explore the music and dance of different cultures and genres. The always-rousing and always-unpredictable evening is an exceptional program that unites the overwhelming talents of two of the university s most popular and engaging performance ensembles. By William Shakespeare Directed by Richard Kemp April and :00 p.m. April 17 2:00 p.m. Waller Hall Mainstage A Theater-by-the-Grove Production The Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare s most farcical and accessible of comedies. Two sets of identical twins, separated at birth, unknowingly end up in the same town. Confusion runs rampant in this bawdy story as each is mistaken for the other by wives, mistresses, business partners, and the authorities. In this production, the mysterious and exotic quality of Shakespeare s original location, Ephesus, is transported to the sultry, tropical glamour of Havana in the 1950s. This production contains situations which may not be suitable for younger children. The Department of Theater and Dance is fully accredited by the National Schools of Theater. A Premiere Concert: The Litton String Quartet Sunday, September 12 3:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall John Sutton Hall This opening concert of the series marks the premiere of IUP s new string quartet in residence and features Stanley Chepaitis, violin; Swanna Chepaitis, violin; Donna Lorenzo, viola; and Linda Jennings, cello. The concert is the first of three concerts for the season with this program featured on our Sound Choices series. Those that subscribe to Sound Choices or the Totally Everything package will also receive vouchers for free admission to the other two Litton Quartet recitals to be held November 16 and April 10. IUP Chorus and Premiere Piano Tuesday, October 26 7:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall John Sutton Hall The IUP Chorus, with featured new piano faculty members, Henry Wong Doe and Anastasia Antonacos, will perform works by Brahms and Vaughan Williams, along with Irving Fine s setting of poems from Alice in Wonderland. Wong Doe, a native of New Zealand, is a world-traveled concert pianist who has performed in numerous major concert venues such as New York s Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv. Antonacos has performed in a wide variety of concert halls in the U.S. and across Europe. The concert is under the direction of James Dearing. This spectacular tradition comes home again to the Fisher Auditorium stage as the IUP Marching Band raises the roof, performing a collection of moving, spirited, highly energized music. Voice and Brass Sunday, February 20 7:30 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall John Sutton Hall The voice and brass faculty from the Department of Music join in this concert to offer a special chamber music recital. You will hear a wide variety of works from the Renaissance to the present day that feature the human voice performing with the majestic sounds of trumpet, horn, trombone, and tuba. This very unique program is under the direction of Christian Dickinson. IUP Concerto Competition Finale Concert Monday, March 21 8:00 p.m. Following a rigorous competition process starting in December, four students will be selected to each perform a concerto with the IUP Wind Ensemble. The process begins with students performing a ten-minute excerpt on their solo instrument, followed by judging by music faculty and students. After several weeks of rehearsal, the finale concert will feature the finest IUP student musicians in this very special performance. The IUP Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Jack Stamp. Concert repertoire and performers are subject to change. 7
