INTERNATIONAL SERIES ONE Saturday 9 April 7.30 pm Dunedin Town Hall ODE to JOY GALA 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT The orchestra s 50th anniversary year celebrations start with Beethoven s iconic Symphony No. 9, best-known for its exhilarating fourth movement when the soloists and choir combine with the orchestra for Schiller s Ode to Joy. Appropriately, some of Otago s outstanding musical talent will feature: Tecwyn Evans, Claire Barton and Jonathan Lemalu. Also on stage will be City Choir Dunedin which has been a constant factor in the orchestra s history. Our soprano, Madeleine Pierard, is a sought-after soloist, both in New Zealand and the UK. As with the other two 2016 International Series concerts, this concert starts with one of the fanfares commissioned for the orchestra s 30th anniversary in TECWYN EVANS Conductor MADELEINE PIERARD Soprano CLAIRE BARTON Mezzo-Soprano JONATHAN LEMALU Bass CITY CHOIR DUNEDIN Programme: Tecwyn Evans: Fires of Light A selection of operatic arias and duets Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, The Choral

INTERNATIONAL SERIES TWO Saturday 13 August 7.30 pm Dunedin Town Hall The ROMANTICS Bruckner s popular fourth symphony is a sweeping and emotional work, and it includes a depiction of village life (including forest hunting) as described in the medieval romances. The symphony s coda builds into a blazing climax in which power, dignity, and excitement all contribute to this masterwork s conclusion. Making his début appearance is Noah Bendix-Balgley, Concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, to perform Brahms romantic violin concerto, considered to be a very technically demanding concerto. Jessica Cottis returns after a busy 2015 year which took her to the UK (including the Isle of Skye), Australia, New Zealand, as well as Gallipoli. Also in 2015 she was named an Associate Member of the Royal Academy of Music, an honorary award for alumnæ who have made a significant contribution to the profession. JESSICA COTTIS Conductor NOAH BENDIX-BALGLEY Violin Programme: Anthony Ritchie: Albatross in Flight Brahms: Violin Concerto Bruckner: Symphony No. 4, Romantic

INTERNATIONAL SERIES THREE Saturday 10 September 7.30 pm Dunedin Town Hall Dvorak s NEW WORLD This concert s artists have been linked inextricably to the orchestra s history. Nicholas Braithwaite first conducted the orchestra in 1992, and he has contributed significantly to the orchestra s artistic development, especially during his ten years ( ) as Principal Guest Conductor. Pianist Michael Houstoun is an Otago University graduate whose connection with the orchestra goes back 40 years, to his first concert with us in Opening the concert is a work by the late Jack Speirs, acknowledging his considerable contribution to the orchestra, especially as its Music Director from 1974 to Dvorak s exuberant and popular From the New World symphony and Bartok s third piano concerto are both infused and invigorated by folk music elements from their native countries - Czechoslovakia and Hungary respectively. NICHOLAS BRAITHWAITE Conductor MICHAEL HOUSTOUN Piano Programme: Jack Speirs: Fanfare Beethoven: Leonora Overture No. 3 Bartok: Piano Concerto No. 3 Dvorak: Symphony No. 9, From the New World

MATINEE SERIES ONE Saturday 11 June 5.00 pm; and Sunday 12 June 3.00 pm King s and Queen s Performing Arts Centre London CALLING Now in his second year as the orchestra s Principal Guest Conductor, London-based Simon Over returns to conduct a programme which has many associations with London. Mendelssohn s Overture to A Midsummer Night s Dream is based on Shakespeare s play of the same name, and it provides an atmospheric opening. Closing the concert is Haydn s final symphony, composed while he lived in London. It is said that the final movement s melody is both a traditional Croatian folk tune and a London street seller s cry. This is an elegant, majestic and sophisticated symphony, and amply demonstrates why Haydn was known as the father of the symphony. London-based Kiwi violinist Natalia Lomeiko (who was the inaugural winner of the Michael Hill International Violin Concerto) returns to perform Bruch s Violin Concerto, a concerto which is popular in concert halls around the world. SIMON OVER Principal Guest Conductor NATALIA LOMEIKO Violin Programme: Mendelssohn: Overture to A Midsummer Night s Dream Bruch: Violin Concerto Haydn: Symphony No. 104, London

MATINEE SERIES TWO Saturday 9 July 5.00 pm; and Sunday 10 July 3.00 pm King s and Queen s Performing Arts Centre Beethoven s EROICA Both Holly Mathieson and Jenny Banks now have flourishing careers in Europe, but both started their orchestral careers with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. Among Holly s recent appointments is as the Resident Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland Junior Orchestra, and also the performance faculty at the Goldsmiths University (London). Jenny Banks is currently Principal Second Violin of Leipzig s Gewandhaus Orchestra, one of the most venerated orchestras in the world. The concert ends with Beethoven s heroic Eroica symphony. Originally dedicated to Napoleon, Beethoven crossed out the dedication when he learnt that Napoleon had declared himself Emperor. Instead, the title Eroica celebrates the memory of Beethoven s patron Prince Lobkowitz. HOLLY MATHIESON Conductor JENNY BANKS Violin Programme: Bach: Violin Concerto No. 1 Purcell: Suite for Strings Paisiello: Overture to The Barber of Seville Saint-Saens: Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso Beethoven: Symphony No. 3, Eroica

ARTS FESTIVAL DUNEDIN CONCERT Saturday 1 October 7.30 pm Dunedin Town Hall Gallipoli to THE SOMME Our 2016 season finishes in spectacular fashion with a major new work by Anthony Ritchie who has long been recognised as one of New Zealand s most prolific and approachable composers. Since soprano soloist Anna Leese graduated from Otago University, she has gone on to an illustrious career. Ex-Cantabrian Paul Whelan now sings with many of the world s prestigious orchestras and opera companies. The first half of the programme features works that reflect the events and times of the First World War. Exclusive early-bird 15% discount offer to 2016 International Series subscribers: To qualify for this discount, your ticket application must be with your 2016 International Series application, be for the same seats as for the 2016 International Series, and be received by us by Tuesday 9 February.
